The new Bandai 1995 Gamera vinyl figure is a thing of beauty.
Early in his career, (Ishiro) Honda made movies which were clarion calls regarding everything from humanity's intrusion on the environment to thermonuclear war, but as his career progressed, he became much more interested in looking inwards and his subsequent fantasy films reflected this change. "Mothra" and "Gorath" show him as an optimist, yet a number of films he made during the mid-to-late 1960's, "Frankenstein Conquers the World" and "Godzilla's Revenge," reveal a more pessimistic trend, not only towards world events but his own career; his aspirations for global cooperation at a time of heightened Cold War fears having now been transformed into cynicism and disappointment (in 1968's "Destroy All Monsters," the first thing Godzilla does after arriving in New York is destroy what was once Honda's great bastion of hope: The United Nations Building). Nevertheless, he always held out a grudging hope for the future and never stopped believing in the potential of people; he couldn't, or it would have destroyed him as surely as the first Godzilla destroyed Tokyo.
