There is no intention of deciphering whether or not the foreigner jests, though if the hint of strange, powerful aura she boasts tells the yaksha anything, it's that they shouldn't worry about the wounds she'd sustained; she probably didn't even bat a lash at any of them.

"You seem to have this handled; I shall take my leave, then," curt farewell as they ready to flit off elsewhere. "If you drop dead, however, know that I will personally help with your burial rites."

“oof.” the air leaves vi’s lungs, the warmth of the embrace following a moment after. then vi lets out a soft laugh. yae’s embrace is so secure that vi could crumple and still be held up: she knows this. this is what safety feels like, she thinks.

after years of blows and silence, a hug feels even more dangerous. not in the sense that a hand could snap her neck, but in the way that threatens to overwhelm. vi closes her eyes and yae is still there, sharp jaw resting against vi’s shoulder, a grounding pressure, not moving, not going anywhere.

slowly, vi wraps their arms around yae’s back, feeling the spine beneath their fingertips, the slide of all that hair. they hold tighter than they have to. they knock the side of their head, gently, against yae’s.

     Something  about  the  words  ring  true  ,  familiar  .  An  explanation  for  that  she  had  been  feeling  ,  and  yet  ,  the  feeling  itself  is  still  entirely  lost  upon  Shenhe  .  It  is  likely  not  the  words  themselves  ,  rather  ,  the  meaning  behind  them  .  The  way  Miko’s  smile  curls  enough  to  bare  fang  after  uttering  final  purr  has  Shenhe  tempted  to  lean  in  ,  to  catch  pink  flesh  between  her  own  teeth  and  explore  more  carnal  desires  she  had  become  privy  to  thanks  to  fox’s  devious  novels  .  It  is  what  she  is  allowed  to  feel  ,  isn’t  it  ?

there are things vi knows better than the backs of her hands, and most of them are that the shape of her is a black shape she wants to be on the outside of. it is a monster’s shape; it has big claws it rakes down the face of everything it has ever loved. she does. it’s all the same thing.

yae has been nothing but kind, and vi doesn’t know where the other shoe is hanging. she doesn’t know when she’ll push her too far and the fissures in whatever’s holding them together will crack, earthquake split. is this it? a slow resignation? vi has always been too much for anyone to handle, so it’s better to be too much all the way.

“then sweat me out,” she says. you are a fever. i am learning to live with you. yae shouldn’t have to live like that. but there is the monster in her voice; it is the part of her that snarls stay away and throws fists. it sends a chill down her spine. she closes her eyes and sees it on the inside of her eyelids.
