Oof. Daisy R really is the epitome of the white rich British woman isn’t she? That interview really shed light on the kind of oblivious person she is. It’s like she’s only capable of the shallowest layer of wokeness which is having a fun time at Pride and the characters she plays being role models for girls, but when it comes to addressing her own class and race privilege she gets defensive and fragile. I’m so disappointed
I’m not disappointed because, aside from the fact that Daisy’s always given off big fake-woke energy imho, this is exactly the degree of self awareness that can be expected from middle-to-upper-class western folks. It’s mostly performative and shallow, and when somebody points out privilege the immediate reaction is “but I worked HARD to get where I am”, or “but I have anxiety and serious skin problems and I’m a woman and so I Struggle™” and… girl, nobody is denying that things can be individually difficult—even impossibly difficult—for people who have racial and/or class privilege, too (heck, here I am, having both and still being on the verge of an emotional breakdown every other day). It’s just that, of all the stuff you need to worry about, your race (or ethnicity/nationality) isn’t one of them, and neither are your financial means. It’s something you need to acknowledge and not in a dismissive “I realize some people have it worse” way but by admitting that your status made things easier for you even in ways you can’t entirely recognize, because you’ve always experienced the world from YOUR side of things (see: her saying she doesn’t think John’s background & experiences are THAT different from hers… that was irritatingly naive).
What really makes me think, though, and I know I always harp on culture and education, is how someone with the level of education that Daisy has (boarding school, etc.), can be so hand-wavy and superficial and blissfully oblivious (even borderline insulting, without meaning it) when discussing certain themes. You would expect from these people better arguing skills and better impromptu critical thinking than “nobody ever asked me about this, and I’m completely at a loss here”.
It certainly speaks of how some people don’t really use their higher education in a proactive manner—to continue educating themselves even after their university years are over—and how the most recent and nuanced discussions on racial & class (and yes, also gender) privilege are still a niche thing mostly confined to progressive spaces on social media, and haven’t even begun to touch official spaces in the real world, let alone the education system which—speaking for my country, at least—is like 20 years behind with these topics.
I can’t make heads or tails of Daisy’s attitude towards Rey and Kylo’s dynamic. Sometimes she seems really coy and smiley about it, but when talking about outright Reylo she seems concerned with what people think of it and problematicness. Does her coy/teasing demeanor about canon Rey and Kylo mean romantic Reylo isn’t happening? Am I misunderstanding this completely? I just feel like there’s mixed messages
1) I wish we (and the general media industry) could stop placing so much importance on how actors / directors / creators in general personally feel about the dynamics they portray in an endorse/not endorse sense. That’s not their job. They’re selling a story, not some dating advice. They don’t have to /support/ the stuff they portray, they just have to portray it convincingly and believe it’s a story worth telling.
2) I think Daisy is best at articulating meaningful answers when she’s allowed to describe actual scenes and Rey’s motivations and feelings in them, from an acting and artistic perspective. When she has to talk vaguely about stuff she isn’t allowed to reveal in depth, or is asked about her personal opinion, that’s where her answers become odd and poorly worded (note how she often stumbles, doesn’t complete her sentences or uses slang/informal language to deflect the question and give non-answers)
3) I think at this point they cannot realistically escape addressing the issue of romantic reylo, whether it happens or not, and I mean addressing it IN the movie, not in the promotion. I mean Rey and Kylo are both young adults, objectively attractive, they share a star-crossing force bond, Kylo has appeared shirtless to Rey so she knows he’s a snacc, he practically wags his tail whenever she’s around, etc. Romance is a natural evolution of human closeness and intimacy, and what Kylo and Rey share is Intimacy with the capital I, so sidestepping it without even an explanation would 100% leave the audience (including the “neutrals”) unsatisfied and puzzled, knowing on a deep level that something is missing. Is Rey (or Kylo) homosexual or asexual? Is Rey just not Kylo’s type, or viceversa? Is either of them not interested or inclined to feel romantic attraction or pursue a romantic relationship or have romantic desires and why? Is Rey (or Kylo) into someone else at the moment? All these things are possible (theoretically, if SW were real life and not a cohesive fictional story where nothing happens without a reason) but deciding not to go the romantic route WITHOUT addressing any of these scenarios would be absolutely cheap and unsatisfying, because at this point the narrative is absolutely inviting the audience to expect a romance to blossom, and if it doesn’t happen people will want to know why. It would be like deliberately leaving out a piece of the story, a loose thread, and in the last movie of the entire saga there shouldn’t be loose threads, or things left unsaid.
