A dramatic police operation in Victoria’s Central Goldfields has ended with a man being shot dead after a seven-hour standoff at a rural property in Daisy Hill.

The incident began just after 3 pm on Thursday when reports were received that a man had fired a gun at another person along Menzies Drive, about 50 kilometres north of Ballarat. According to police, the 39-year-old suspect narrowly missed his intended target, an older man, before fleeing the scene.

GAME(S) THE WEEK

ATHERTON LR 0 FC OSWESTRY TOWN 1

DAISY HILL 1 CARLISLE CITY 2

First time I have ever got to 2 games on the same day that were not part of a groundhop and totally unplanned. As games fell to the weather throughout the morning I finally decided to head over to Crilly Park. After a stroll to the Trafford Centre Bus Station, I was soon on the 132 heading to the Wigan area, alighting at the same stop as I do for Colls it was not too long before I was at LR's ground.

LR came out to have a team photo taken a few minutes to three, leaving the officials and opposition waiting at the entrance of the dressing rooms. And waiting. And waiting. And waiting. It would have been quicker to take the picture 100 years ago. Eventually we got underway and I was soon joined by Colls gaffer Michael Clegg, his son Alfie and later Jasper. We stayed until half-time, a 45 minutes dominated by LR without threatening the visitors goal too much, but they were certainly on top.

The main bit of intrigue was how Alfie, who had got a couple of quid off me, kept disappearing and coming back with more and more food, think it must be the old Clegg charm!

At half-time, we headed off west in Jasper's VW van to Daisy Hill, Alfie singing along with the radio and I was soon at New Sirs to catch my second game. missing only the opening 12 minutes or so.

A tight game was being played out in the first half with, for me, Carlisle City looking slightly the more dangerous, and I was joined by Ian Williams, who for once had not served me my pie, though the young lady who did was much easier on the eye! Ian and entourage had been doing a tour of Merseyside trying to find a game that was on before ending up at Daisy Hill. Once again we reached the break goalless and I was off to get myself a half-time Oxo.

The second period was only 5 or so minutes old when Daisy Hill gave the ball away at the back and then promptly conceded a penalty, which was easily tucked away by Tom Lucock. Carlisle City were in control and whilst their opponents toiled away, it was the sky blues who looked the more likely to score. Ten minutes later they did just that, Mark Graham had a free header that was kept out by a combination of keeper Haynes and the crossbar and as the rebound looped in the air the defence played statues and Graham was left with the easiest chance he will probably get all season.

To Daisy Hill's credit they didn't give up and continued to try and find a way through City's defences, which they did with 15 minutes to go when substitute Mills, who was being an increasing handful, beat a couple of men before setting up Curtis Cummins. His shot taking a slight deflection to take it past Skelton in Carlisle's goal.

That was pretty much that. It got colder. Daisy Hill tried harder, but the status quo remained as I disappeared into a misty Lancashire evening to get my bus back to a warm home and thaw out.

MONDAY

HAMILTON ACADEMICAL 3 HEART OF MIDLOTHIAN 3

A footnote more than anything for this game, not one that counts for me. Stuck in Glasgow with very little to do on a Monday night, I ummed and arghed about going to New Douglas Park for this SPL match. In the end, it beat sitting in a room on my own. 

The visitors took an early lead through an excellent strike by Walker before Accies took control of a frantic match. Crawford drew the hosts level direct from a sweetly struck free-kick so they went in level at the break. Straight after the break Bingham gave Accies the lead and extended it with 3/4 of the match gone with 2 good finishes.

Cue the comeback, Walker converting a penalty in the 73rd minute before Paterson grabbed a late equaliser. Not the prettiest game, but certainly entertaining, worth the visit for the Bovril & Steak Pie alone.

MONDAY

DAISY HILL 4 ATHERTON LR 2

As I start my busiest ever week in my life as a reborn football fan, where better to head off to than New Sirs for a local derby, my first trip here in over a year and long overdue. A walk to the place of cultural excellence that is the Trafford Centre I was soon on the bus heading to Wigan. a short walk off the bus, I nearly made it all the way to the ground before someone reversing off a drive nearly knocked me down.

Daisy Hill's clubhouse is one of my favourite's, an old building of charm and character that has had to have new seats put in front of it, I understand why but it has lost some of its charm. A pie and drink bought whilst being entertained by Ian Williams is pretty much standard when I visit New Sirs, great entertainment.

Atherton LR lost another match in front of Mr B, though the scorelines are improving slightly, the 4-2 victory for the hosts could have been more and really should have been. An early penalty was saved and a 1-0 lead at half-time did not reflect the superiority Daisy Hill had over their opponents.

Whilst the second half was slightly more even, the hosts were trying at times to be too clever, though the victory was never in doubt. Their third goal, a strike by substitute Curtis Cummins was stunning.

I would like to mention one thing, as we started the second half, one of Daisy Hill's players ran past the opposition back into the clubhouse, he re-appeared 3 or 4 minutes later as Atherton LR equalised having spent the intervening time sat on the toilet. Isn't non-league football great.
