hand in unlovable hand

Steph reached out a hand to check her temperature. Cass tensed up a little at first, probably on instinct, but relaxed when Steph gently laid the back of her hand on her forehead. “Jeez, you’re burning up,” Steph said. Cass’ brow furrowed. “You’re sick,” Steph clarified. Cass’ frown deepened. “I don’t… get sick.”

Cass was still a little confused about this whole Halloween thing. The dressing up was strange on its own, and the candy part just didn't make sense. She internally cringed at the thought of a child taking food from someone they didn't know. Weren't they worried about toxins? Poisons? 

No, they weren't. She could hear Steph in her ear, saying 'That's not normal' or one of her other favorite catchphrases. Cass tried not to remember the time she'd gotten a small cake from her father and ate it happily before spending the next few hours throwing it up and retching, having unwittingly started her tolerance training. 

"Did you have anything in mind?" That was real-life Steph. She was sitting on the couch, legs kicked up on the ottoman, the remote in one hand. 

Cass shook her head. They were holed up in the apartment with the windows closed; Steph had picked up on Cass's wariness of the droves of wandering children and suggested they stay in and watch a movie instead.

"Are you in the mood for horror or something campy?"

She shrugged. Steph didn't seem put off by her indecision. 

"Ooh, I know! Beetlejuice." She pressed a few buttons to shift channels. "It's super fun and it's got this crazy worm with other worms, like, coming out of its mouth—"

Cass smiled a little at her excitement, the words fading into white noise as she focused solely on the way Steph's eyes lit up and the stupid pumpkin headband she had on, sitting crookedly on her head.

"—does that sound good?"

Cass nodded and curled up against her side, resting her head on Steph's shoulder. Steph hit play and shifted so that one arm went around Cass. The movie was good but so obviously fake, everything looking like bad special effects. Cass thought that the absurdity might have been a purposeful choice on Steph's part, but she didn't ask. They stayed silent and close together until the credits rolled.

Kon untangled his limbs and half-stood, half-floated upwards. He smiled and Krypto took it as an answer, surging forward into Kon’s arms. “Hey,” Kon said, burying his head in Krypto’s fur. He knew he would smell like dog and probably end up spitting out a fair amount of fur later on, but he didn’t care. Krypto was a comforting warm presence, heavy in a grounding way.

what's behind you

chapter 1 -- 5k words -- exr 80s/90s f1 au

Grantaire lowers himself fully onto the floor, looking up at the screen. He mutes the channel and watches for the next hour, just to see. His heart rate slowly calms as he watches the cars zip across the screen. There's only one more shot of Enjolras, right before the end of the race. He has his helmet off (he got a haircut at some point) and he's gazing up at, presumably, another screen. He doesn't look like a righteous angel. He looks devastated. Grantaire's not as happy about it as he thought he'd be. Or: in 1993, Grantaire and Enjolras both stand on the podium after their last race together. Nine years earlier, Grantaire picks up Enjolras from a German airport. What happens in between is anyone's guess.
