1/1: I’m halfway through my rereading of the HP series, and reading all that Hermione discourse on your blog inspired in me some positive Hermione discussion: if she was of age and applied, do you think she would have made a good Triwizard champion? I thought about it and most important things in the end and cleverness and mastering magic, and she is after all the most brilliant with of her age. She doesn’t lack bravery. Maybe she does lack some cold blood (remember the fire thing in SS)
2/2 but in the end of the day all champions ended up knowing the first two challenges beforehand, and the third one didn’t require really much preparation anyway. So I was thinking she could have performed as well as, and with similar style, as Diggory and Fleur. I just wonder if she would have ever applied because she has always been thirsty for praise but not for glory and fame the way other characters are. I’m curious to know your opinion about it, tho!
Thanks for the question! I’ve not thought about this before. I agree with you that her biggest struggle would be magic under pressure.
There are things she’d be especially good at! A lot of the magic would be easy for her, and she’d certainly be better about preparing than Harry was…if she had applied and been chosen, she’d have done well. She’s a skilled witch and she’s pretty good at reading what expectations are and meeting them. If she’d struggled in the first task, she’d have been able to adjust and kind of go, “oh this the playing field and I have to step it up.”
That said, the whole spectacle of it doesn’t strike me as something that would appeal to her. Like you said, she likes praise. It’s more she needs consistent validation than she needs…a Title. She’d rather focus on school and her grades and doing well at what she’s Supposed To Be Doing.
The Tournament is kind of sporty and adrenaline based. If it were more academic, she’d be all over it.
