Kinda based on the movie Holiday Engagement
*little tiny bit of Fred bashing but nothing extreme*
Diana Barry was engaged to Fred Wright, a rigid businessman that was all work and no play. He made her feel more like a client most of the time but she brushed it off. He was terribly handsome and had been so sweet when they were dating. He was just stressed, is all.
One day he gets a call that he's been offered a job out of state and would need to move in the next few days in order to be at the new corporate office by the following Monday. Diana is less than thrilled and expresses her displeasure. Taking it as a sign, Fred breaks off their engagement and says he needs someone to be excited for him and his dreams, not behaving so selfishly as Diana was
Heartbroken, Diana can't even go back to the apartment they shared, especially while he's packing up his belongings. She goes to stay with Anne and her husband Gilbert. It was awfully depressing. Even worse. Christmas is approaching and she was absolutely dreading at the thought of going to her parents' house without her fiance. Now her mother was going to pick at her, wonder what she did to make him leave.
Anne suggests she just hire someone else to play the part of Fred, since the Barry's and Fred had never formally met, have a huge argument while there and 'break up'.
Gilbert, to his credit, tried to talk some sense into his wife but whenever she had a plan, there was no stopping her
It was so crazy and outrageous but the thought if going there by herself was enough to make Diana say yes
They go through handfuls of people. No one is suitable.
Diana is about to give up when Anne forces her to accompany her to buy some sweets from the local new bakery that just opened. The owner is friendly and is one of her new found friends (though he is a bit annoying, she warns).
Diana doesn't really want to go but she does. She stands closer to the door while Anne chats with Jerry, his name tag read.
After a moment, she's reluctant to admit it but he would be the perfect man to bring home
But what would it take to convince him? She confides in Anne later that night about how perfect he would be and she's slightly surprised but is then very excited
"Oh Diana, wouldn't it so romantic if you two fell in love and you did get married!"
Diana ignores that, figuring that's just Anne being Anne. She was in no mood for any romance of any kind
The next day she goes back to talk to Jerry. She ends up persuading him after revealing how important it was to her and promising to pay him back the losses from not having the bakery open for the time he is gone (this was one time her money came in handy)
He agrees and she gives him a little assignment; to memorize the names of her family. It isn't hard. Just her parents, sister and she includes a few other relatives just to be on the safe side
They leave and Diana is very nervous but she has no idea that she's about to fall madly in love with Jerry and dread the incoming "break up" scene they'll have to do
