As Michael Jackson once famously told Paul Mcartney, "I'm a lover not a fighter." So I was not excited about taekwondo. Mercifully it was a private class and we spent a lot of time talking about the history of martial arts and Korea. Ryan, the taekwondo master at International Kumgang Taekwondo Center is a great instructor and it was a really intense workout. I'm also happy to know how to kick someone to stop them from breathing.
My first weekend here I did an overnight Templestay at Myoaksa Temple. In my first three days here I had gone to Deumcheon Art Center, Korea Tourism Organization, two aerobics classes, a cat cafe, Seoul Tower, The National Museum of Korea and Namsangol Hanok Village...I'm tired just writing that. And all of this after a 13.5 hour flight, two hour layover and another short two hour flight.
So when I found out that my schedule had to be changed so that the Templestay would be that first weekend, I was relieved. Finally a moment to breathe.
Search Your Mind
Anytime the sunim (Buddhist nun) who ran the Templestay would talk about the mind, she would point to her gut. She told us that there are five poison minds that we are greedy for (or something like that). They are food, sleep, money, power and love....we always want more of these things.
We had to bow each time we passed a statue of Buddha but she kept reminding us that we are bowing to ourselves not to the Buddha. "You are the most important person," she kept reminding us.
She said that as humans we always want to control each other but that is not possible and we must only work on controlling our own minds. She said that when we have emotions like anger, "Search your mind. Please."At the end of the stay, she gave us each readings because she can see people's auras. She said that I have a lot of fire. In the positive it is passion, in the negative it is anger.
She kept emphasizing that there is no right way or wrong way to do things, just different ways of doing things. She said that her way is not the right way, just different from ours.
On the first day we performed 108 prostrations and after getting up from each one, we would place a bead on a string. So we made prayer beads for ourselves. Each prostration begins standing with hands in prayer position, then kneel, place hands on floor, forehead down, left foot over right, elbows down, turn hands palms up and lift from elbow, lower hands palms down, raise up on elbows and place a bead on the string. 108 times. It was a beautiful meditation/prayer.
