Damballa: Serpent through the keyhole

Progress shot on a large color version of this original drawing which is for sale in my shop. I did this color version with a basic set of school markers and also some goofy scented markers that have some nice shades of pink.

Always use any excuse you can to draw a rainbow.

Who is Damballa?

Damballa (also spelled Danbala, Damballah, or Danballah-Wedo) is a primordial loa in Haitian Vodou, associated with snakes, particularly the python. He is one of the Rada loa, a group of spirits believed to be generally benevolent and peaceful, though no less powerful for their gentler demeanour.

He is often considered the father of all the loa and the co-creator of the world. Alongside his female counterpart and consort Ayida-Wedo, Damballa weaves the structure of the universe. The two serpents are thought to encircle the earth, their movements giving shape to the rivers, mountains, and skies.

In Vodou, Damballa is not a humanlike god but a vast, serpentine cosmic force. He does not speak, at least not in the human sense. When he possesses someone during ritual, the person typically makes hissing noises or lies silently on the ground, mimicking the sinuous movement of a snake. His energy is transcendent and deeply spiritual, often inducing a state of quietude, peace, or reverence when invoked.

Damballa’s Origins and Syncretism

Damballa's roots lie deep within the traditions of West African Vodun, particularly among the Fon people of Dahomey (modern-day Benin). In these ancestral religions, serpent deities play a significant role in cosmology and are seen as guardians of water, fertility, and life. The name "Dan" or "Dan Ayido Hwedo" appears in these traditions as a rainbow or serpent god who supports the world on its back.

When enslaved Africans were forcibly transported to the Caribbean, they brought their gods and spirits with them, often blending them with Catholic saints to protect their religious practices from colonial suppression. As a result, Damballa is commonly syncretised with St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, who is famously associated with driving snakes out of the country. The irony is profound—while St. Patrick is said to have banished serpents, Damballa is the serpent, revered and exalted rather than feared.

Symbolism and Representation

Damballa is most commonly represented as a white serpent, particularly a python. The colour white is extremely important to his worship and reflects his purity, sacredness, and association with peace. His symbols and offerings must also be white or colourless.

Iconography

Serpent imagery: Snakes, especially pythons and rainbows, are central to Damballa’s depiction.

Veve: His sacred veve (a ritual drawing used to summon loa) features interwoven serpent shapes or a pair of intertwined snakes.

Rainbow: Often associated with Ayida-Wedo, but also a part of Damballa's cosmic identity, the rainbow symbolises the arc of creation and balance.

Damballa and Ayida-Wedo: The Sacred Pair

While Damballa can be invoked on his own, his presence is often entwined with that of Ayida-Wedo, the rainbow serpent and his consort. Where Damballa represents the white, masculine, sky-bound force of creation, Ayida-Wedo embodies the feminine, coloured, watery, and earthbound aspects.

Together, they form a divine duality, much like yin and yang or Shiva and Shakti in other traditions. Their coiling around one another in eternal union symbolises the balance of male and female, sky and earth, form and fluidity. This cosmic dance is not only spiritual but also represents the DNA helix, the double spiral that codes for life itself.
