*snort*  I have a bunch, hopeless lover of the broken ones that I am.  And I’m sorry for the wall of text, but you knew what you were getting into asking me this one.  *bonks my head with yours* 

He’s not really a liar, in fact, he’s terrible at it.  What he’s good at is manipulating the truth to his own ends.  Is there an element of gaslighting to it in a romance?  Eh...I think the case for that would be stronger if he didn’t own it if your Inky throws that in his face.  He’s cautious and yes, manipulative.  It takes an awfully big person to admit they’re wrong, especially one coming from a society that was so cutthroat that it’s all he’s used to dealing with.  ‘Old habits die hard’ is an adage for a reason. 

I think he’s demi coded.  His romance is very slow and while people assume that’s because of his unwillingness to commit (and/or his willingness to end the world as we know it), you and I both know that emotional attachment isn’t linear or rational and sometimes you end up falling for someone in a disastrous fashion.

He’s not an asshole unless you make him that way.  It boggles my mind the number of people who think he’s a jerk because they ended up with low approval.  That’s totally dependent on y’all’s playing style.  I truly don’t get the desire to be evil in video games.  And then - oh no *shocked gasp* - you mean there are consequences to our actions?!  But I digress...

I think it wasn’t a mistake to raise the Veil, even with the 3800 years of fallout from it.  Cole even says so, our sweet cinnamon roll murder baby who also couldn’t lie his way out of a wet paper bag.  He says very plainly that Solas was not wrong.  Yeah, I know that’s not the same as saying he was right.  But while his plan went sideways and he didn’t get the outcome he was aiming for, the fact remains that Solas wanted to save the world.  He at least didn’t actually destroy it, it just needs a little tweaking.  After all, he still has a people to save, and it sounds like if he’d done nothing at all, that wouldn’t be the case.

And finally, I don’t think he’s going to be the villain of DA4.  I think he’s going to be someone the new protag has to work with, willingly or not.  I think whatever powers that be that we’ll be fighting will be immense, and both his experience in rebellion and the fact that he doesn’t truly want to wreak havoc, just save his people, will play heavily into that.  (I also don’t think the protag will be the Inquisitor, the franchise has yet to repeat on that score and I don’t see that changing now.)  We don’t know half as much about him as we think we do, and I expect there will be a few more surprises along the way before the whole thing is over.
