meet cute: Pretends to be your boyfriend to save you from a guy hitting on you at a bar
i’m going to do this with a timer soulmate type i hope thats okay!!
You were relieved almost as much as you were disgusted when you looked down to see you still had two minutes left before meeting your soulmate. The internal clock you were born with counting down the years, months, days, hours, and minutes to this night was infallible. Sure, there were stories of soulmates who felt fundamentally incompatible, but those were rare.
Yet, if the asshole with the bad breath and overbearing demeanor had been your soulmate, fundamental incompatibility would definitely have been your fate.
“Why don’t you let me buy you a drink?” the drunk asshole said, placing one hand on the bar beside you and leaning closer until his face almost met yours.
You tried to smile and remain polite. Honestly, you hadn’t wanted to come to a bar tonight. But something about it just felt right. And, you didn’t want to ignore your instincts and miss meeting your soulmate all together. Your decisions could affect the timer. There were times in your life when something seemingly as inconsequential as choosing what color dress to buy had increased or decreased the time on your wrist.
Tonight, when you stepped out of your house and into an uber, the timer hadn’t changed. Everything was right on track.
Everything except for the man who was now pushing closer to you, causing you to rear back. Placing a palm on his chest, you tried to push him away but was met with solid muscle.
“Come one, sweetheart.” His smile caused your stomach to churn. “I’m not asking for nothin’ special. Just a drink.”
One sweaty palm reached out towards you and for a second you thought he was going to touch your face, or perhaps slip a strand of hair behind your ear. Whatever he was going to do, you never found out, because all of a sudden a tall, handsome stranger was grabbing his hand and pushing it away.
“Keep your hands off my girl, mate,” The stranger growled. The bad-breathed man from earlier looked perturbed as he glanced in between the two of you. For a second, you thought he was going to protest, but then the handsome stranger crossed his arms and glowered. It didn’t take long for the gross man to scamper off.
You breathed a sigh of relief as your savior faced you.
“Thank you,” you said, shooting him a smile.
“It’s no problem,” he responded. “There are some skeevs in here tonight. Be careful.”
And that should have been it.
But, as he turned to walk away, his eyes caught your wrist. They flickered between his and yours, and your heart lept in surprise as you did the same. Both flashed 00:00:00:00:00.
You didn’t realize you had uttered that sentiment aloud until he responded, “Holy shit is right. Hi. I’m Calum.”
Yeah, this was definitely the guy. You were already in love with his smile.
