Fic Idea!!!
Booker's betrayal seemed to be based in the fact that he had to watch his children die, and couldn't do anything about it. he lashes out at Nicky and Joe because they are so content with their immortality since they have each other.
But they had 700+ years together before Booker. things were obviously Tense when they first met. their lives are not all sunshine and rainbows.
now, for the actual fic idea: What If Yusuf had A Family before he Died? it seems likely that a man in his early 30s would have a wife, he could have even had children.
But, what if they are the reason he joined the fighting? he was a merchant, traveling with his goods, returns home to find that his wife and children have been killed by the Christian Invaders. becomes a one man wrecking crew, meets up with Nicoló, and discovers the horrible reality---he can't die. if he had been there, would he have been able to save them?
cue more angst when he and Nicoló end up traveling together. Eventually, once they are friends, Yusuf tells Nicoló everything, his wife (pleasant enough, it was an arrangement and they had a comfortable life), his daughter (so young and beautiful, she had just lost her first tooth when he left), his son (younger than his sister, and a quiet boy), and the child-not-yet-born.
Nicky is the only one who knows about them now. and on Holy Days, days of Remembrance, he and Joe always go off by themselves to honor the ghosts.
