I'm imagining at some point if the question came up about would Bucky be with John if Steve hadn't left? - either from John feeling particularly in the mood to hurt his own feelings or from someone else being unbearably nosey- and Bucky would answer No...

... which would hurt John's feelings, of course...

But Bucky would shake his head and explain that if Steve hadn't left, he never would have even met John. John would also still be married to Olivia(because if Steve was still around there would be no reason for John to be made Cap, take the serum, and get caught up in that situation the way it went down), presumably doing well enough (maybe with another kid even), and also that it wouldn't mean he would be in a romantic relationship with Steve just because he was there. If the only thing that changed was Steve not staying in the past, Bucky would probably still be single and secretly pining over his best friend.

John frowning, "Oh... aw..."

"I'm still kinda mad at Steve sometimes for leaving. It doesn't even seem like something he would do. I wonder if he realized he was going to age when he made the decision to stay, if he thought he'd be able to just... live the long way and come back and get both options. You know? And then by the time he realized he was aging too much to pull that off it was too late, and then, well, that's a lot of years to make peace with it. Or maybe he never regretted it. No way to know. He made his choice and I had to live with it."

"Huh... I don't like the idea of him getting to just take you for granted like that..."

"It's just made up, John. Maybe I'd kick him to the curb. Don't worry about Steve the same way I don't worry about Olivia. If things had been different, we'd be different people. You loved each other once, were good for each other then, nothing changes the truth of that. If Steve came back somehow today, I wouldn't stop being in love with you, John."

"... and if Olivia wanted me back tomorrow, which she wouldn't, but, you know... yeah, I wouldn't even consider it."

Bucky kisses his cheek. "Exactly."

"Unless you wanted to try some kind of throuple situation..."

"John."

"I am obviously kidding."
