at some point she would have to leave her spot, she’d have to pull her hair back up, she’d have to face the world again. she wasn’t so soft for those words to hit her yet, but she let them roll over her. let them come close to wiggling their way under her skin.
her head rested on the other girl’s stomach, blankets twisted between and around them; she can hear azalea’s heart beat with her ear pressed against the soft skin of her abdomen, azalea’s fingers playing with messy braids she’d weaved into octavia’s hair only a day or two before. sometimes azalea hummed. she thought it was probably unconscious, but it made the air in the room seem softer somehow. her gaze stuck to the fire rippling in the corner, eyes glazed and not quite taking in what she was seeing. the sun had set h o u r s before. one more day that had passed and she knew that meant she had to leave when it rose again. as dawn goes down to day, nothing gold can stay. ( where was that from? she could hear it in bellamy’s voice, far away like a door or the floor was closed between them, but not whatever he’d said after )
for now she stayed quiet, pressing her face against the other girl’s bare skin for another few seconds, then shifting, adjusting, getting comfortable again. her head still rested on azalea’s stomach, one arm now slung across her hips, pulling the blankets up a little higher over them both when it did. eyes closed, even if she wouldn’t get any sleep any time soon, so the world could fade away. she had no name here, she hadn’t a past, or a brother, or a loss, or a hurt heart, or a guarded soul. her hand hung over the other side of azalea and idly traced little patterns on the skin it could reach. for now it was all she could bare.
