AG Candidate Dan Branch sets target on voter fraud
The Branch camp released a statement on Thursday announcing the plan to establish a 'Voter Fraud Task Force' if elected. Some highlights:
“As Attorney General, I will:
closely monitor the activities of groups that would seek to subvert ballot integrity
appoint a Special Counsel devoted to exposing and prosecuting any instance of voter fraud, and
aggressively defend the landmark Texas voter ID law from the Obama Administration’s spurious attempt to invalidate it.”
Based on the wording of the release, Branch led readers to believe controversial, Houston-based True the Vote endorsed Branch due to the plan.
The voting watchdogs offered a clarifying statement via Twitter yesterday:
"We appreciate all good ideas on election integrity and voting policy regardless of the source. To confuse appreciation with a partisan endorsement demonstrates a misunderstanding of what a nonpartisan educational organization can do."
Texas Monthly's Paul Burka argued the move was purely intended to pander to primary voters.
