Student, you do not study to pass the test. You study to prepare for the day when you are the only thing between a patient and the grave.

One day you’ll be the resident, the lone one on the wards, late into the shift or the night. Quite literally, you are the thing between the patient and the grave, you, the nurses, the senior resident on the phone. It’s not your grades that will save your patient (or you), it’s what you remember from your training, and how fast that kicks in. There’s nothing to mask or hide what you do or do not know. It’s also a test of your limits and depths. And seeking help is not weakness but strength and learning. So next time you remember and next time you’re faster and stronger than death. There is nothing else so raw, so terrifying and exhilarating, as that moment when that days comes. Another day, it could be that is the research you do, the calls that you make that allows your patient to live longer and live with more meaning. And that same urgency will be there.
