The Leakey Foundation and the Field Museum present Dr. Dan Lieberman at The Field Museum. April 4, 2009. Full Title: Survival of the Swiftest, Smartest or Fa...
I had to watch this video for my Population Dynamics class. It’s probably boring to most ppl on here but I found it so intriguing and wanted to share it. It reminded me of why I love anthropology so much. I don’t agree with everything Lieberman has to say but I really enjoyed the theories and got to thinking about a lot of things. In particular the question of “What will happen in human evolution?” really got me. And I think an interesting aspect to think about is how “our bodies are not entirely well designed for the world we created.” He said we can trace the oldest farming populations to 600 generations ago, that isn’t very long in evolutionary time. We are definitely still evolving and where we are lacking in evolution from quick paced technology evolution we patch up with “cultural buffers.” We have an incredibly high tech medical system in place to support people who cannot survive on their own in a world that their bodies are not evolved to handle. We are out pacing our species ability to adapt! And also, I think we are such incredible creatures! We have so much ability and efficiency within our bodies while also being so fragile and very very lucky to have become what we are. But we have chosen a path that is destructive to our bodies and to our resources and we are just choosing to let the planet to continue to degrade along with the future of our species as we know it.
