Local Paper Calls Dan Maffei “M.I.A.”

“The behavior of Rep. Dan Maffei is not acceptable.”

That’s the way a local Syracuse newspaper began its editorial today, lambasting Maffei for ignoring his constituents and for being “missing in action on the campaign trail.”

Not exactly the kind of press Maffei, a Columbia University journalism graduate, is looking for. The Syracuse New Timesblasted Maffei for dodging a candidate forum because he thinks it’s politically expedient. They go on to say:

While all-around chump Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle spent the last two years voting to undermine abortion rights, health care access, and even birth control, former congressman and women’s health champ Dan Maffei was gearing up for a fight.

Maffei has been a consistent critic of Buerkle, pointing out her extreme positions on a range of women’s health issues. When Buerkle hosted a town hall to protest the new birth control ruling, Maffei spoke at an “alternative” town hall nearby in order to draw attention to her retro stance on affordable access to birth control. When Buerkle voted to repeal the health care law, Maffei distinguished himself further.

The 2010 election ushered in a new crop of legislators opposed to women’s health. Of those, few are more dangerous and extreme than Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle (R-NY).

From New York’s 25th Congressional District, Buerkle not only supports fringe anti-choice organizations like Operation Rescue and New York State Right to Life, but she has served as their spokeswoman to the public. In fact, she even led attempts to intimidate doctors who offer abortion care by organizing protests in front of their offices.

Unfortunately, that’s just the beginning. In 1989, she helped orchestrate an anti-Planned Parenthood rally in which a dead fetus was carried down the streets of Syracuse, NY.
