No More Home Alone Remakes

Home Sweet Home Alone is a 2021 Home Alone remake directed by Dan Mazer. It wasn't well received. The problem with this movie is that the original Home Alone was a product of its time. I'm not saying the humor was offensive. What I mean is every inciting incident that led to Kevin being left home alone couldn't happen in 2021. The power outage that froze the McCallister's alarm clocks wouldn't have mattered if everyone in the house had set alarms on their smartphones. All their boarding passes would've been stored on their airline apps. Kevin could've texted his parents and told them they left him behind. Then the parents could've got a Lyft/Uber to take Kevin to the airport, call the airline to tell them what happened, and have flight attendants escort Kevin to the next available flight to Paris so his parents could pick him up at the airport. If the McCallister's also had ADT, they would've been notified on their phones, saw Harry and Marv trying to rob their house through their security cameras, then cops would've immediately been called and have them arrested. 

The only way a modern Home Alone reboot could work and make logical sense would be if the family was one of those old-fashioned, anti-technology families who lived on a farm deep in the rural country with no Wi-Fi or cell reception. Also, have neighbors be over 20-miles away. It also would've taken too long for the police to show up. That way, it would've added to the danger and desperation of the kid who gets left behind because they really would be on their own with no way to call for help. It also would've been more justified for the kid to build dangerous traps for the robbers.

“Home Alone” Reboot Begins Casting

Archie Yates, Ellie Kemper, and Rob Delaney have signed on to star in the Home Alone reboot for Disney+.  Dan Mazer is directing from a script by Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell. The film will not follow Kevin McCallister, but a new character (Yates) who will be placed in a similar situation.

Variety broke the news.
