Dan Snow, the most fuckable historian.
I've given Dan Snow's History Hit channel a lot of shit in here, and rightly so, because (at least for awhile) it was very "crap TV" and way too pop-history to be worth very much in the YouTube ecosystem.
That said, he is a fantastic "history communicator," and does seem to be genuinely interested in telling real stories about real history, even when those defy tradition and expectations. He really does have a passion for this, and when he lets it, it shows.
He's also a great storyteller. This is 50 minutes of him telling the "saga" of the Battle of Hastings, and the just-as-thrilling leadup to 1066 and all that.
If you're intimately familiar with this story, or have no idea what I'm talking about, you will still get a thrill out of Dan's dramatic retelling. This is just good-old-fashioned fireside regaling of the time that (metaphorically) the Viking Age was crushed by the Anglo-Saxon Period, which itself was butchered by the Middle Ages.
Pour yourself a beer, put in your buds, let the phone charge, and enjoy the story of how we came to be, goodly told.
...Also this still is Dan Snow's History Hit, so there is an initial promo tie-in for some BBC drama about this that premiered back in August. It stars at least one Game of Thrones guy and is probably fine. (It's called King & Conqueror, because dads will definitely watch something called that.)
Oh, Dan. Gotta get that danegeld.

One might have squealed a little upon inspecting one's Youtube feed this morning. Dan Snow is always such an Aubrey fan boi. 😂
Actually, according to my calculations, he came from a relatively wealthy family and conquered approximately 2% of the world's landmass 🤓☝
I bet Dan probably had an episode on the titanic planned for a while but scrambled to get this out lmao
