S15: Top 10 Guys

Cole - He’s picture perfect for this show, so I think with that strong contemporary performance, he’s a lock. I didn’t feel a real emotional connection to the routine, but it was danced beautifully and authentically, and I liked it! 

Jay Jay - First of all, welcome back, Chelsie Hightower! It’s been a MINUTE. I thought Jay Jay performed the heck out of this Cha Cha. His feet were flying, his arms were strong, and he had a blast. He exudes confidence, and I can’t wait to see more from him. 

Slavik - I definitely got “Why” vibes from this routine, but really, it’s almost impossible to look any good next to Allison. She’s too good. I felt the chemistry between them, and I thought he danced it well, but I’m not sure he’s quite ready yet.

Justin - Love me some comfort, always. She’s another one. I thought the routine seemed really short compared to the others, and I didn’t feel like he ever got the real feel of the routine. I actually agreed with Mary that he needs to work on the acting part a bit. 

Peyton - Peyton definitely has the look and feel for the show, but there was just something off about the performance to me. You could almost feel how hard he was trying, as if he was dancing to not get kicked off rather than to dance into the Top 20. Glad the judges felt the same way, and I’m not crazy. 

Kyle - I adore Kyle. He was 100% committed to that performance, and even when there were minor slip ups, he remained in the moment and there for Frody. He is basically the whole jist of the show - an untrained (and by that I mean not formally trained in expensive classes his whole life) artist who will benefit the most from each week of learning. I want to see him in the live shows for sure. 

Evan - I know I’m historically biased towards tappers, but I was super impressed by Evan. He held his own with Allison - those turns at the end! I also feel like he committed emotionally, and it was truly captivating. GREAT choreo from Brian too.

Dustin - I adore Dustin too! His smile lights up a room, and even in a non smiley routine, I feel like other facets of personality came out. I didn’t love the music , but the routine itself was good and Dustin danced it well. He held his own with a very good dancer in Jamie, and it seems like he had a great Academy week. I’m 100% down to watch him on the live shows.

Allen - I feel like Allen is Kiki 2.0, and even though I ended up liking Kiki, I don’t really feel the need for that journey again on this show. It’s become such a trope and I don’t like it. There was nothing really special about his jazz performance with Frody, except for Frody of course. He was fine, but I don’t need him in the Top 10. Which probably means he’ll be there. :|

Darius - They daed the best for last, because that was great. He was completely on Comfort’s level, and they were so cute together. He sat really well in the choreography, and you could tell he was actually having fun. If the judges can tell him “no more sad routines”, can they also tell the contemporary girls “no more angsty solos” please? Because if THAT comes out of it, we’ll have a lot better of a competition. 

My gut feeling about the Top 5 - Cole, Jay Jay, Evan, Kyle, and Darius. (I promise, I guessed these before I watched)

Actual Top 5 - Evan, Jay Jay, Cole, Darius, Slavik

I’m so sad about Darius, but if Season 16 happens, I’d say he’s a lock. And I’m crushed about Kyle. UGH. HE WORKED SO HARD. Slavik was good, but stillll. 

This is a beastly Top 10, and I’m pretty excited to see the live shows next week.

S14, Top 4

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention how ansolutely perfect Cat looks tonight in the cold open. Perfect hair, perfect makeup, perfect dress, PERFECT HOST.

I was wondering how the opening number had such high energy and swagger level, and then Cat said that Nappy Tabs choreographed it, and it all made sense. Miss them on this show a lot.

Top 4 Group routine - This may be an unpopular opinion, but I didn’t really like this. It didn’t feel like Travis or like Christopher Scott, and in my opinion, it also didn’t seem like a collab. I see why the beginning parts were necessary, but they also read like cheesy solos to me. Or maybe it was the overly “epic” music choice? I don’t know, but I just wasn’t that impressed.

Taylor and Kiki, Cha Cha (Anya) - Anyone else get dizzy from the camera work and ridiculous lighting? Just me? That being said, I think they actually danced it really well. Taylor kept up with Kiki, which isn’t easy to do when he’s in his style. There were a lot of distractions around this routine that I didn’t love, but the actual routine itself was pretty good.

Koine and Lex, Broadway (Al Blackstone) - Well if that wasn’t the cutest thing I’ve ever seen!!! Wow, I liked that a lot more than I thought I was going to. It had the potential to go the cheesy route, but with the actual good dancing and real choreography, I actually found it quite impressive. Their chemistry was fantastic, and you could tell how much fun they were having. Plus, it included a tuxedo tee, so that was just the cherry on top. Loved it!

Kiki’s fav was Mandy’s contemporary. Interesting choice, seeing as though he barely danced in it. I definitely like him a lot more than this started, but I’m not quite on the tear train that Jenna and all the judges are on tonight.

Lex solo - No idea how this guy continues to amaze me with his moves. Like...how???

Koine’s fav was also one of my favorites of hers from this season. It was so different and so dynamic, and I’m not sure any other dancers could have pulled this off like she and Marko did.

Kiki solo - Another good one from from this guy.

All star routine by Keone and Mari Madrid - This was really good, but all I could thing was that Jasmine was severely underutilized in it!

Koine and Taylor, Jazz (Mandy Moore) - Well, the girls came in HOT. It’s interesting to see them both in this, because they are both clearly competition dancers. To me, Koine is the better performer, but it’s almost impossible to ignore Taylor’s damn legs. They absolutely nailed the tricky turn sequence, and really the whole darn thing. Great job, girls!

Lex and Kiki, Hip Hop (Luther Brown) - Lex is just better in hip hop than Kiki. Seeing them side by side, there’s just no comparison. I think it’s silly and kind of a cop out when people just throw ballroom steps in everything for Kiki. Make him do the damn style! That being said, he has definitely improved a TON, and I have to commend him for that. Lex is just awesome at all of it. Chosen One, indeed.

Taylor’s favorite was Travis’ contemporary piece from the first week, which is no surprise. It was stunning and probably played a big role in carrying her this far. This time was even more gorgeous than the first.

Koine solo - I just love her spirit. She’s so lovely.

Lex’s favorite was tap, which is freaking adorable! It’s just so far from what he does best, and he’s still incredible at it. I know he gets a lot of inflated praise, but this routine just proves how talented he really is.

Taylor solo - Another gorgeous solo from Taylor. I can’t say they don’t all look the same, but the same could be said about most contemporary solos...

Koine and Kiki, Contemporary (Travis Wall) - I think this was choreographed and danced very well, but I’m not sure I bought the chemistry between Koine and Kiki. The beginning was light and floaty and beautiful, but the “disintegrated” part of it felt pretty typical to me. I still liked it, but it wasn’t my favorite.

Taylor and Lex, Contemporary (Mia Michaels) - Well, their instagram posts definitely led me to believe they were dating, but I guess it’s official. Lex and Taylor are in love! They must really want one of them to win, because they fave them Mia and a Sara Bareilles song, and it was beautiful. Personally, I liked their broadway piece better, but damn that was cute!

Well, that’s it..that’s the competition. The results are in the hands of those of you that vote. Good luck! Personally, I’d be fine with any of them winning. I think it’ll be Lex, but it seems to be drifting in Kiki’s direction after tonight. Will we finally have a ballroom winner? Will the brunette dark horse win the day? Guess we’ll find out next week on @danceonfox!

S14, Top 7

Can we talk about how much I loved Cat in pigtails in the cold open?! YES GIRL. But also, excuse me? Next week is the finale?? We literally just got started...this cannot be true. 

Opening number was awesome...there was just so much going on. It was pretty impossible to focus on anything, but some takeaways for me were:

- Logan can tap too??? Is there anything he can’t do? At this point, he’s almost better than the all stars,

- Jenna is literally the main focus in all routines, and I’m fine with it. 

- Allison is still amazing in everything always.

Lex and Gaby, Hip Hop (Luther Brown) - Well the studio audience pretty much said it all for this one. The applause was deafening! I loved to finally see Lex actually having fun, not just playing a fun character. He was clearly enjoying himself and actually let loose, all the while hitting the moves SO hard. He’s just great. Gaby was also excellent, but not sure about that wig. :)

Taylor solo - Lines for days and so graceful. 

Logan and Allison, African Jazz (Sean Cheeseman) - This one started out slow for me, but with some pretty awesome partnering and cool lifts from Sean. But, when they really got into the fast sections, they absolutely nailed it. Logan’s pirouette sequence was, to quote Vanessa, “INSANE.” He just gets better and better every week, and he even started with a pretty high bar. I say it every week -- it’s typically hard for me to tear my eyes away from Allison, but Logan makes that happen.

Mark solo - He is just so much fun to watch. Baby Bruno Mars???

Kaylee and Cyrus, Contemporary (Tyce) - This was the first choreography of Tyce’s that I’ve liked in awhile. It had a story, but it wasn’t cheesy. It also highlighted Kaylee’s strength and energy very well. I also thought Kaylee’s feet / lines looked a lot better since the last time she had contemporary. There is something about this partnership that I really enjoy, and I think it’s because it all is so real. 

Koine solo - This might have been my favorite solo of hers so far. So powerful, but a cute little jolt of fun at the end. :)

Kiki and Jenna, Broadway (Warren Carlyle) - It’s impossible to not watch Jenna in side by side numbers, and this was no exception. I will say, Kiki is definitely improving, but I still don’t love him. That being said, this was a fun routine from Warren...I pretty much always love what he does!

Logan solo - That hands-free head spin??? Just WHAT??

Koine and Marko, Jive (Dmitri) - Koine might be the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. This routine sat so well on them, and their chemistry shined once again. There were some incredibly intimidating lifts in this piece, but they handled them all with ease and clearly had fun doing it. 

Kaylee solo - Her solo seemed short for some reason, but I really loved it.

All star routine - Loved the HELL outta that routine. WOW. I want to see it live, or maybe at a @taylorswift​ concert? Brian Freidman choreographed for Britney, so it is just a natural transition right?

Taylor and Robert, Contemporary (Mandy Moore) - Mandy is such a beautiful choreographer and Taylor is such a beautiful dancer, so this was just a perfect combination. The lines were so long and lovely, but Taylor also shows so much strength in her dancing. Mary described this piece as ethereal, and I couldn’t agree more. It gave me chills to watch them and maybe brought a little tear to my eye. 

Lex solo - It’s just silly how good he is. I can’t even say anything about it anymore.

Mark and Comfort, Hip Hop (Misha Gabriel) - There was some great choreo and tricks here, but the song was super distracting. So, lbr I just pretended I was listening to Bad Blood and it was perfect! Mark is ridiculously talented, and I feel like he’s the most underrated on the show.

Kiki solo - I may not be his biggest fan, but I haven’t seen ballroom solos that good since Pasha in Season 3. The man can dance. 

Kaylee, Lex and Logan group number (Dwight and Desmond) - Wow...what a number. First of all, I loved the song and I’m going to download it now. This was a really powerful piece with some really beautiful choreography. Kaylee kept up with Logan and Lex, and to be honest, I couldn’t keep my eyes off her. Logan and Lex were absolutely stunning too, of course. This was a great routine...two thumbs up!

Mark, Koine, Taylor and Kiki group number (Sean Cheeseman) - Well shit, that was incredible as well. The whole concept, the spoken word track, the concentration, the group support...everything came together so perfectly. I loved watching all of them work together in different combinations on some truly unique lifts and partnering skills. The Kiki/Mark lift sequence was especially incredible. 

Bottom 3: I called it the moment before Cat said it - Kaylee, Mark and Kiki. None of these contestants deserve to go home, but someone has to. I have to say, after tonight Kaylee was probably the most deserving to stay. I’m not sure I believe that Mark had the lowest votes, but I do know that he absolutely had the best attitude and I’m going to miss watching him dance.  

Next week is a double elimination, but I’ll be shocked if anyone other than the other B3 from this week go home. Logan, Lex, Taylor and Koine all deserve the finale in my opinion, but we’ll see how it goes!

S14 TOP 10!!!!

A few general thoughts before we get into it:

- Love the new stage! The “balconies” remind me of the old days, and it just looks cool.

- CAT DEELEY IS THE BEST.

- Vanessa Hudgens is adorable and an excellent addition to the judging panel. Jason who?

- Pretty sure I recognized the all star group routine costumes. Anyone?

- Hope Allison’s injury isn’t too bad. Miss her!!!

- I wish we could get to know something about these newbies...I didn’t feel like we got to know them that much throughout The Academy or as much as previous years. 

- The editing so far this seasons has been absolute crap. Awkward transitions, sharp cut offs and just all around annoying. The partner reveal seriously ruined the anticipation and drama of the green mile. I loved watching the reactions, and this solo walkout onto the stage is not doing it for me.

Fikshun and Dassy -- Dassy was a great choice for Fikshun. They clearly have great chemistry, and they have the same fun personality that shows through their dancing. And damn, Dassy can hold her own! There were some really intricate moves in Poppin’ Pete’s routine, and they really were on the same level.

Allison and Logan -- I’m pretty torn about this routine. First of all, you can tell from the choreography that it was absolutely meant for Allison. I like Audrey a lot, but she’s not Allison. I can see why Allison chose Logan though. He really gives so much to his performance, just like her. Logan is also mature beyond his years, in carriage and in skill. I think he’ll be around awhile. 

Jenna and Kiki -- I’m disappointed in this choice. Concrete would have been such a hard worker and an overall better DWTS pro audition for Jenna. Sure, Keke is a great ballroom dancer, and he did great in that routine BUT there is no match for that chemistry that Jenna had with Concrete at The Academy. Great choreo from Dmitry, and as everyone said, GREAT job by Jenna. We’ll see how long Keke lasts...he’ll definitely get the cute guy little girl vote.

Cyrus and Kaylee -- OBSESSED with this match. Chemistry is off the chain!!! There were some really cool choreo moments from Tessandra, as usual. I love the story that she always tells. I was honestly surprised by the harsh critique from Nigel. I though Kaylee was beautiful and real. I also love that she doesn’t have the “typical” dancer build...she’s athletic and strong in addition to being graceful and beautiful. I wasn’t going to vote, but I think I will for her. 

Gaby and Lex -- There was almost zero drama in this choice...the world would have revolted if she didn’t pick Lex! I know that most dancers take tap at some point, but damn is Lex good for not being a “tap dancer”. He gets those nuances and hits the rhythms so well. I really like him in this style because I feel like it brings out the light hearted and fun side in him that contemporary doesn’t. Fabulous routine by Anthony, to the surprise of literally NO ONE. These two will go far for sure!

Comfort and Mark -- As much as I would have loved to see Comfort dance with another girl, I think this was the right choice for her. There was some great chemistry in that Luther Brown piece, and he has a little goofy side that fits so well with her $wag. And so much energy! As Vanessa said, the camera loves Mark and he knows how to work that. It’s a damn good pairing, and I am rooting for them. I have a feeling Mark can do a lot of things well. Ha Nigel - Bruno Mars’ little brother for sure!

Marko and Koine -- This was a tough choice because Marko performed so well with both his girls in The Academy. It could have gone either way, but I’m really pleased with Koine. Usually Marko is a little bit lost in a partnership (obvious exception = Melanie), but he seems to really vibe with Koine. She is breathtaking and everything seems so effortless in her movement. I can see them going far. 

Paul and Sydney -- I ship it!! There’s some great chemistry with these two...they just seem to fit so well together. The synchronicity was spot on, even with some fast and tough choreography from Val. Sydney seems like she could be the brunette dark horse in this competition. Something about her makes me feel like she can do literally anything. I think if she can get over her “personality issues”, she’ll go really far.  

Robert and Taylor -- First things first...TRAVIS FREAKING WALL! I can’t deal with his genius. Vanessa is a damn mess, and I am right there with her. Taylor is absolutely STUNNING. When you dance to an acapella, there is no room for error, and there was no error! It was extremely technical, extraordinarily beautiful and beyond moving. I adore Robert, but it was honestly hard to even notice him with Taylor’s skills. WOW. These two are going to be a force to be reckoned with!

Jasmine and Robert -- I would like to take this moment to say that I might be a little bit in love with Jasmine Harper. She is incredible, and she just gets better every time I see her. Robert was so fun in this, and he really kept up with Jasmine. I really loved their chemistry and connection, and it was just a great piece from Chris Scott. I’m hoping these two do well!

Overall, this was a great first live show. I’m not sure if I like the whole dancing with the same all star every week thing, but it does bring me back to the whole o.g. partners situation. I’m feeling positive about the talent this season, and I’m excited for the rest of the episodes to come!

S14, Top 9

I’m still sad about last week’s elimination, but honestly I think that will happen every week because everyone is great and fully qualified to be there. Ugh.

That being said, let’s get into it because there are a lot of dances tonight - duets, solos, an all-star dance, a group dance...it’s be jam packed!

Group Dance - Loved the energy, loved the all-stars, loved Lex (seeing as though he was really the only one featured in that). Seriously though, I don’t understand how Lex can flip as well and as high as he does. Crazy talented. 

Logan and Allison, Jive (Emma and Sasha) - I love the DWTS crossover choreo, and that was a really fun piece! Logan really got to show a different side of himself than the “alien contemp” dancer. Allison has got to be the absolute best coach / mentor because she really makes anyone who dances with her be their best self, even in a completely foreign style.

Kaylee solo - I liked her dancing but her face always looks concerned. Anyone else notice that?

Sydney solo - Another great ballroom solo from Sydney, but definitely something weird happened because her aerial turned into a cartwheel. Weird.

Koine and Marko, Hip Hop (Dave Scott) - The audience was seriously going NUTS in the background of that dance. Anyone else catch that they spelled Koine’s name wrong? Come on, interns! The chemistry between these two is still phenomenal and regardless of the style they get, they might be able to ride that pretty damn far. That being said, both of them were awesome in that dance. Koine really got into character and hit on the choreography. And again, she made Marko look good when his partners in the past (at least as an all-star) have not. 

Dassy and Fikshun, Jazz (Ray Leeper) - These two could have their own variety show, and I swear it would be a success. They are so great together. As for this routine, I’m a bit on the fence about it. I absolutely loved the energy and the fun costumes and the overall vibes. However, you could see some holes in Dassy’s technique. It seemed to be lacking a little bit of sharpness, especially on some of the kicks. I also didn’t think Ray really highlighted Dassy enough in that, and it also didn’t feel much like jazz to me. All that being said, I did enjoy it but wasn’t crazy wow’ed. 

Kiki solo - Gotta hand it to the guy...he really knows how to rock a ballroom solo. And play to his fans. 

Mark and Comfort, Contemporary (Talia Favia) - That was pretty incredible to watch. I just pretty much stared in awe the entire time. Their connection was on POINT. Each movement was perfectly synchronized and their support of each other was visually and physically palpable. I hope I’m not being super biased because Mark danced for @taylorswift, but I really adore him.

Taylor solo - Someone else on here was saying that the stage looked slippery, and that was pretty evident for poor Taylor. She was all shaky on her poses and spins...very un Taylor like.

All Star Group Dance - Travis Wall will change the world. 

Lex and Gabby, Broadway (Warren Carlyle) - Lex is a freaking chameleon. I didn’t even recognize him in this with all the fun he was having! I’m so glad he’s coming into his own week after week. There was so much in this routine, and it all seemed like it was on warp speed. Lex didn’t miss a beat, and again, can he defy gravity? That leg flare OMG. 

Logan solo - This kid is like Travis, Jakob Karr, and Robert all rolled into one, and I am HERE FOR IT.

Sydney and Paul, Hip Hop (Luther Brown) - This is another one that I was pretty indifferent to. I thought it was a fun concept, but as Nigel said, a little basic. They were clearly having fun with it, but I didn’t get the commitment or grove of it from Sydney. She feel a little flat for me, especially next to Paul.

Koine solo - I think my favorite thing about her is that she doesn’t do angsty solos. She shows her passion and personality, and they are both excellent! And they spelled her name right!

Top 9 Group Dance - Love this piece! It was so much fun, and I feel like everyone had a real chance to shine. Standouts for me were Logan, Lex and Taylor.

Kaylee and Cyrus, Jazz (Specer Liff) - I seriously hate when people talk about props like “dropping the [insert any prop here] would be disaster”. It wouldn’t. Seriously though, I liked this dance a lot. The stylized choreo and quirkiness of it were perfect for Kaylee, and I thought their timing and synchronicity were on point. I agreed with Mary that some of the jumps were a little labored-looking, but it didn’t detract anything from the routine for me. It reminded me a little bit of the suspender dance with Sara and Pasha from S3 (and later Jenna and Lindsey haha), which is one of my all time favs.

Mark solo - My aesthetic = Mark dancing to an Ed Sheeran song. GREAT solo. 

Taylor and Robert, Samba (Jean Marc) - First and foremost, I absolutely love Jean Marc and need him on the show every week to keep things interesting. I agreed with Nigel’s comment on the lack of chemistry / flirtation and Vanessa’s on lack of fire. It was a little bit “dance competition” feel for me with the smiley faces. I also didn’t love the song, which isn’t their fault but just an observation. It was sad to see the sad looks on their faces during their critiques. Breaks my heart!

Dassy solo - Damn she’s good. So committed and focused in her movements, and it’s great to watch.

Lex solo - HOW? Just HOW?

Kiki and Jenna, Contemporary (Mandy Moore) - Man, I forget what an absolutely beautiful dancer Jenna is, especially in contemporary. That was a beautiful piece by Mandy, and I thought they both performed very well. Honestly, there wasn’t much that Kiki had to do outside of partnering Jenna, but he partnered the hell out of her. Everything looked so effortless and beautiful. Their chemistry was tangible, and I’m starting to come around on these two. 

Spoilers ahead -- you’ve been warned!

Bottom 3: Dassy (what???), Sydney (not all that surprised unfortunately) and Mark (um NO)

When you get in the bottom a couple weeks in a row at the beginning and then have a mediocre routine, it’s hard for the judges to find a reason to keep you, unfortunately. Sad to see Sydney go, but I think it was the right decision.

New York Auditions, S14E4

Saw on Twitter that Nigel said this group of auditions were some of the best he’d ever seen. The clips alone in the beginning gave me chills, so I had high hopes.

Magda and Kiki, Ballroom - Right from the get go, I loved their dynamic as partners. Their audition was great and showcased a lot of skill, but I appreciated that they both genuinely looked like they were having fun. Kiki was an incredible partner / leader on the floor, and Magda had a commanding presence without being cheesy. These two are great!

I’m super bummed that we didn’t get to see the full routine from Claudia and Jorge (Ballroom)...the curse of the unlicensed song. Their tricks looked incredible, and I liked to see a ballroom dancer that with the strong and powerful body type, as opposed to the stereotypical “legs for days” type. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it’s nice to see diversity. I also liked the little we saw of Jarryd and Allen, also ballroom boys. 

Zachary Downer, Contemporary - I don’t remember him from the Green Mile in Season 12, but it’s no surprise after watching that audition. I have no idea how he manged to pack SO MUCH into such a short piece! He commanded the attention of the whole audience, and I couldn’t take my eyes off him. I definitely agree with Nigel about his resemblance to Alvin Ailey.  Side note: I loved how supportive his family was. 

Ramita Ravi, Classical Indian dance and Contemporary - I’m not sure why I was so touched by this audition, but it made me teary. There was so much beauty and joy in her performance, and I really loved watching it. Another positive: it was something I haven’t seen before in all of the seasons of this show! She’s clearly a trained dancer, so I knew she’d have no problem with the choreography. 

Arielle Disciascio, Contemporary / Jazz - Anyone else think the “Don’t make me sound perfect” comment they showed was weird? I have to say, even thought she was a wonderful dancer, I didn’t really enjoy that audition. I thought there were no transitions, and it read like a series of poses instead of a dance. Maybe I’m getting a little jaded in episode 4 of auditions, but I just wanted more from her. But clearly she’s worthy of the Academy. 

Chris Andrews, Chase Lindsey and Jason Kidd have all been here before. Chris Andrews made it to the Green Mile, but I don’t recognize him. Jason Kidd looked vaguely familiar to me and like someone the young girl dynamic will really buy into. I feel like one of these guys is going to be a contender.

Romainson Romain, Hip Hop - What a beautiful tribute to his cousin. I didn’t recognize him until they showed the clip from Season 8...if memory serves me right, he did mostly break dancing then but threw in a few contemporary jumps that turned some heads. Choreo was definitely the appropriate place for him, and I’m so glad he made it through!

Claire Rathbun, Ballet - Well, I love her. Ballet is already so impressive in it’s traditional form, but she seemed to bring a different dynamic to it while maintaining traditional technique. I liked that she wasn’t super stiff or porcelain doll-like. I feel like we are going to see much more from her.
