La ganja estranja making a mark!
SYTYCD Allstars
💕💗 A huge thank you to the incredible dancers for making the video so magical and for keeping the secret for so long!!💕💗
Spotted in the new @taylorswift video: Comfort, Jasmine Mason, and Hannahlei!
Please give it up for the dancers!
I know i say “i think about this constantly” a lot but im really not exaggerating when i say i think about the so you think you can dance group victorian zombie routine to ramalama bang bang by roisin murphy constantly
just so the producers know, i do love this show. i love it so much that i don’t need production gimmicks or rigged eliminations. i don’t need dances with extravagant costumes and props. i watch this show because i love the people and the dancing. you’re not gonna lose me as a viewer so stop changing it and forcing things down my throat. thanks.
THIS!!!! Just keep it pure and true to its roots. And keep bringing back all stars because they are great and I can deal with that change / improvement.
SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE USA SEASON 15 // Top 10 Contestants / «Yummy» by Gwen Stefani ft. Pharrell / Hip-Hop / Choreography by Luther Brown / Top 10 Perform Again
S15: Top 10 Guys
Cole - He’s picture perfect for this show, so I think with that strong contemporary performance, he’s a lock. I didn’t feel a real emotional connection to the routine, but it was danced beautifully and authentically, and I liked it!
Jay Jay - First of all, welcome back, Chelsie Hightower! It’s been a MINUTE. I thought Jay Jay performed the heck out of this Cha Cha. His feet were flying, his arms were strong, and he had a blast. He exudes confidence, and I can’t wait to see more from him.
Slavik - I definitely got “Why” vibes from this routine, but really, it’s almost impossible to look any good next to Allison. She’s too good. I felt the chemistry between them, and I thought he danced it well, but I’m not sure he’s quite ready yet.
Justin - Love me some comfort, always. She’s another one. I thought the routine seemed really short compared to the others, and I didn’t feel like he ever got the real feel of the routine. I actually agreed with Mary that he needs to work on the acting part a bit.
Peyton - Peyton definitely has the look and feel for the show, but there was just something off about the performance to me. You could almost feel how hard he was trying, as if he was dancing to not get kicked off rather than to dance into the Top 20. Glad the judges felt the same way, and I’m not crazy.
Kyle - I adore Kyle. He was 100% committed to that performance, and even when there were minor slip ups, he remained in the moment and there for Frody. He is basically the whole jist of the show - an untrained (and by that I mean not formally trained in expensive classes his whole life) artist who will benefit the most from each week of learning. I want to see him in the live shows for sure.
Evan - I know I’m historically biased towards tappers, but I was super impressed by Evan. He held his own with Allison - those turns at the end! I also feel like he committed emotionally, and it was truly captivating. GREAT choreo from Brian too.
Dustin - I adore Dustin too! His smile lights up a room, and even in a non smiley routine, I feel like other facets of personality came out. I didn’t love the music , but the routine itself was good and Dustin danced it well. He held his own with a very good dancer in Jamie, and it seems like he had a great Academy week. I’m 100% down to watch him on the live shows.
Allen - I feel like Allen is Kiki 2.0, and even though I ended up liking Kiki, I don’t really feel the need for that journey again on this show. It’s become such a trope and I don’t like it. There was nothing really special about his jazz performance with Frody, except for Frody of course. He was fine, but I don’t need him in the Top 10. Which probably means he’ll be there. :|
Darius - They daed the best for last, because that was great. He was completely on Comfort’s level, and they were so cute together. He sat really well in the choreography, and you could tell he was actually having fun. If the judges can tell him “no more sad routines”, can they also tell the contemporary girls “no more angsty solos” please? Because if THAT comes out of it, we’ll have a lot better of a competition.
My gut feeling about the Top 5 - Cole, Jay Jay, Evan, Kyle, and Darius. (I promise, I guessed these before I watched)
Actual Top 5 - Evan, Jay Jay, Cole, Darius, Slavik
I’m so sad about Darius, but if Season 16 happens, I’d say he’s a lock. And I’m crushed about Kyle. UGH. HE WORKED SO HARD. Slavik was good, but stillll.
This is a beastly Top 10, and I’m pretty excited to see the live shows next week.
“I’ve seen enough to know that you can be a human with a mountain of resources and you can be a human with nothing, and you can be a monster either way.”
— Clemantine Wamariya, “The Girl Who Smiled Beads”
Top 10 Girls
I didn’t blog last week’s because I watched super late and tbh there was a ton going on. Basically, overall I loved everyone they chose for the Top 20, but I feel like they really breezed through Academy episodes, and I really didn’t get to know anyone.
Hannahlei - AMAZING. Major props to Oksana for some beastly choreography. Those lifts defied gravity! With better costumes, this could have been a number on the show. Hannahlei’s feet were quick and fiery; she performed well to the judges and her partner; and she showed a fun side of herself that contemporary dancers don’t always get to highlight. In my mind, she’s a lock.
Magda - I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again...MOAR BALLROOM DANCERS BELONG ON THIS SHOW. In my (amateur) opinion, Magda was phenomenal. Her legs went for days, her toes were pointed, and as Mary said, she gave a very honest performance. I loved it and think there’s no way she won’t make the live shows.
Dayna - First of all, I LOVE her hair and how she uses it in dance. I liked this performance, and Dayna definitely attacked it and danced it well. However, I don’t think it made the impression on me that the first two did. I think a lot of that was out of her control, but it was how I felt nonetheless.
Jenessy - This was a surprisingly good partnership, personality and dance-wise. I don’t feel like I got to know too much about her yet so far, but she danced well and I got to know her personality a lot through that short performance. She had a ton of fun, but she also hit hard when she needed to. A solid effort from a dark horse contestant aka my favorite kind!
Brianna - I really wanted to like this number from Brianna, but it just didn’t do it for me, unfortunately. I didn’t hate it as much as Nigel made clear that he did, but it just didn’t flow. I also didn’t feel much chemistry with her and Brandon, which was necessary for an emotional piece like this. I hate to think this way, but I feel like I would have liked the routine much more with another dancer in it.
Chelsea - I don’t know what it is about Chelsea, but I just love her! I think it’s probably that killer smile. Even with this stupid Daddy Yankee song (sorry Daddy Yankee fans), she really went all out and attacked every part of this. She didn’t have the crazy impressive lifts in hers that Oksana and Jonathan put in their first piece, but it was still fun to watch and Chelsea nailed it!
Stephanie - The similarity between Stephanie and Gina Rodriguez is uncanny to me, especially in this piece. They may as well have called the piece Jane the Dancing Virgin. It’s hard to dance next to Lex because he is so talented and so unique, but I think Stephanie really held her own. I agree that there wasn’t a standout moment in that, but I’d attribute that more to the choreography. Stephanie is definitely a strong contender.
Sydney - No offense to Sydney, but all this performance really showed me was how much I miss watching Paul. Her performance was a little uptight, and if I put the music on mute she may as well have been doing the foxtrot. I’m sure she’s a fun girl, but I didn’t feel like she had any fun in that performance when it should have been a blast. With only 5 spots for the live shows, it’s got to be about more than just the dancing.
Emily - I could watch these two dance all day! Fikshun is such a great performer, but she held her own with him the whole time. I definitely agree that she might be overly smiley sometimes, but I’m not going to complain about more joy in the world. I love watching her, and I think she’d be perfect in the live shows.
Jensen - Jensen is an absolute beast. She slayed that performance, and you can tell that she has grown so much since last season. She exudes confidence, professionalism, and passion. There’s no way they don’t put her in the live shows - they’d be stupid not to.
My pre reveal guesses (this is legit y’all) - Hannahlei, Magda, Jensen, Emily, and Chelsea
Well, I was pretty close! I have to say, I do think Jenessy was probably a better decision than Emily given the other talent, but I do hope she comes back net year. All of the Top 10 girls were fantastic, so it could have been any combination really!
NO idea how the guys are going to do next week, but I can’t wait to see. And a big bonus thumbs up for Chelsea Hightower back on the SYTYCD stage! We’ve missed you, girl!
Checking out Chloe and crew, live!
LOVE the choreographers for each genre!
Spotted: Jensen Arnold. Drink every time she’s featured? #wasted
Darius is absolutely incredible. I hope he wasn’t actually first because that is real hard to follow for...everyone else.
Jensen again! Time #2 but I’m not mad about it. She commands the stage in a way we really haven’t seen in ballroom in awhile.
Magda is awesome, and I’m definitely rooting for her.
I also still love little Bridget.
KYLE PLEASE MAKE TOP 20!
Great Be My Little Baby cover.
Tessa is extraordinary.
Spotted: LA GANJA ESTRANJA!!! (sp???)
Jensen #3
“This year, we’re looking to up the game.” - Napoleon, every. single. year.
Love that Jay Jackson / La Ganja Estranja made is to the first choreo round!
“I just fell and rolled my ankle.” I swear I don’t love the drama, it loves me.
Look at Evan GO!
Emily Carr looks like Gabby Douglas, and I’m here for her.
Jensen #4
Why did they just tell a whole group they suck but keep them all?
Eddie = Kent Boyd 2.0
Jean Marc is MY FAV!
Jensen #5
Ryan - it’s season freaking 15. You couldn’t take ONE ballroom class between auditions and this? Put in the work, it’ll be worth it!!! Hope he comes back next time.
Jensen #6
Jensen #7
Jay definitely had the moves going, but he struggled with partnering.
Stephanie has now done this piece 3x.
Jensen #8
Just saw Jay in the group jazz piece which means he theoretically makes it to the end, and I think it’s AMAZING.
I LOVE ACADEMY EPISODES. I WISH THAT WAS 2 HOURS!!!
THE ACADEMY
It’s finally here! I don’t know how to blog this properly tbh, so I’ll probably just compile my stream of consciousness into one long-ish post for when I’m done watching.
SO FREAKING EXCITED!
LOLLLLL JENSEN IS BACK YALL
She’s back. With an unlicensed audition song. And featured 28 times in one hour episode.
“Visual intoxication”
Ok but it really was! I thought it was pretentious AF at first, but then he danced and I was totally into it.
Audition Episode #4 - NYC
First time watching live in a LONG time, let’s GO!!! Right off the bat, I’ve seen Jensen Arnold 17 times, and the judges haven’t even sat down yet. Seems like this is going to be her year.
Andrew and Melanie, Ballroom - The cheers were deafening for them, and the judges gave them a standing ovation, so it definitely made an impact. I thought all the moves they did were hard hitting and impressive, especially the spins. My main critique was their minimal use of the stage; they pretty much stayed in one corner of the stage. But, it was clear they have the skills to really dance, so I’m excited to see them at The Academy.
Randorn “Tiger”, Break Dancing - I enjoyed Randron’s personality right off the bat, and it automatically made me root for him. I thought it was a fun performance with a couple truly unique moves (the cross legged flip!) and a ton of energy. I can’t tell his skill level in other styles, but I think he proved his worth to go to The Academy.
Mika, Contemporary - I was in total agreement with the judges that the solo didn’t really translate, but I could definitely see her skills mixed in there. She probably could have used another year of classes, maturity, and fine tuning, but without the choreo round I think she showed enough to make it through. I’m pretty surprised Vanessa said no and Nigel said yes, but either way, I don’t see her going too far in the competition.
Kory, Jazz - What a great attitude from Kory! He was so positive going in, and I really wanted him to be good. There were some bright moments and moves that showed that he had some skill, but it wasn’t nearly strong enough.
Brianna, Tap - Damn. Good. Solo. I loved her calm, cool, confidence throughout the performance. There were so many great moments, and she combined rhythm and grace effortlessly. And, she can also do ballet which means she can do everything. I am predicting that Brianna goes pretty far on this show.
Arcadian, Ballet - An impressive resume and a very impressive performance. Arcadian seems like the perfect person to make the live shows, so they have their incredible talented dancer that they can bother about showing more personality. Aka, the new Chehon. Loved him though, and I can’t wait to see more of his dancing!
Loved everything I saw of the montage of people whose music didn’t get licensed. Jensen Arnold with the ballroom solo was bold, but I’m sure she nailed it.
Bridget, Contemporary - Her look may have been a little dark and unusual, but her dancing was strong and powerful. I liked that such a tiny person packed such a huge punch! It was a thoughtful and well choreographed audition, and I think she’ll do very well.
Ryan, “Visual Intoxication” - When he first said visual intoxication, I wanted to gag, but that is actually what it was! It was a completely mesmerizing performance, and I loved every minute of it. I’ve seen a LOT of animators in 15 seasons of this show, but that was one of the best.
SO excited for The Academy! It’s not on for 2 weeks, but I am stoked. Literally my favorite episode of the whole season, and from the choreographers (Nappy Tabs, Mandy Moore, Jean Marc Genereaux) I know it’s going to live up to my expectations!
Who do y’all want to see in the Top 20?
