Smart way of promoting street safety by Smart!
"We believe that smart ideas can turn the city into a better place," said Mercedes, the German car manufacturer of Smart. "Like a dancing traffic light that makes people watch and wait rather than walk through the red light. For more safety."
That’s right! This past summer Smart came up with a brilliant idea putting forward its engagement to reducing pedestrian and traffic accidents. The brand offered a new kind of service that can be characterized as digital.
In fact, because nobody likes to wait at traffic lights, and, well, because we’re all somehow always in a rush or always late – especially in big cities! – Smart decided to entertain pedestrians and dissuade them from crossing the streets when the light is still red and when there seem to be no cars rushing right through you.
The brand started its FOR campaign in Lisbon, Portugal, and created this interactive installation using motion picture technology and making the traffic lights actually dance!, Therefore pedestrians trying to cross the street on a red light would be dissuated and encouraged not to! Amused by the dancing red stick men lights, the aim is to make the pedestrian forget for approximately 30 seconds that they were waiting!
To make these stick men dance, Smart installed a sort of mini black theatre called the “Dance Box” across the intersections, and invited passersby to get into the box and dance to whatever beat they wanted! Their movements would therefore be replicated – in real time - on the traffic lights through motion-picture technology! Whether it was twerking, cha-cha-ing or disco dancing, numerous volunteers went into the box and offered a little show to the restless pedestrians waiting to cross.
To prove the efficacy of such a service provided by Smart, the results of the tests were quite impressive as one could notice that jaywalking was reduced by 81% on those streets where dancing traffic lights were set up.
Although not all pedestrians recognized Smart’s signature behind this interactive installation, the brand’s service to the well being and safety of the community through digital was greatly recognized as it positioned Smart as a truly caring brand who engages with consumers and offers them services with no direct mercantile purpose.
Smart idea Smart!
