Some weeks Pride feels like a playlist in shuffle mode—some familiar, some new, but no skipping allowed, every track a reminder to dance however I want.

Creepin Quietly: About my Growth in Technique
Oh the toes! Like riding along a slope of snow, my toes melted into the floor. Once I had been given the direction to creep around so quietly to not stir my mom, so many memories flashed before my eyes. I had to force back the tears that welled, so I focused on the task at hand, using those memories as fuel to my power center. With it, my toes melted into the floor, and my arches spreading helped to disperse my weight during the transfer. Every piece of me has a function in the whole, and sometimes I pay greater attention to the core, forgetting the malleability of the toes and the foot’s arches. There is so much information that I am aware of now. That information was probably always there, but I was naïve of how to use it for trusting my own stability.
Also, watching the progress of others gives a realization of the team of women and men around me that created this community of inspiration, yet celebrated each unique individual. It reminds me of my water polo team on a much deeper level of growth. The beauty of open and honest emotion in this world amazes me, and I am not happy with the guarded topics and emotions that characterize my mom, and I sometimes. My entire pursuit of dance has crept quietly behind my mom’s back, for no one to see, but only for my own emotional relief. That is, until I realized I had an audience watching or judging, I had no fears to face. I still get jittery before a performance, but that fear is another tool I use to fuel my regurgitation of emotional content through dance. That flow of emotions is literally what keeps me sane. It keeps me grounded in the facts of my personality traits: both swing and stream of consciousness. Over the course of my life, dance has evolved from an unattainable, personal thing, into a driving mechanism of growth in self-knowledge due to the depth of scrutiny of me being in my body, mind, spirit and community.
