You’re back!
I'm back! How's your life?
I really liked these questions, so, same questions for you! What's your favorite book out of any genre? Why is it your favorite? Favorite character? Thing that bothers you about the book? If you could be a character from the book, which one and why?
Damn. I should have expected this.
Okay, genre: Non-YA Fantasy
Book: Actually a series, the Belgariad, by David Eddings.
Why: It's sort of a classic fantasy series. There is magic and quests and a pantheon of gods and some mythical creatures thrown in there. It's also the first quality fantasy series I read. I read all those Dragonlance books as a kid, and let me tell you, they do not stand the test of time. The Belgariad does. It is just as fantastic as it was when I was 12. All of the characters feel real. The universe felt real. Even the characters you expected to be stock ("Brave Knight" and "Angry Young Rebel") had depth and meaning. And it was complex enough to be interesting without making me want to throw the book against the wall because nothing made sense. I'm not doing it justice. It's incredible.
Favorite character: Prince Kheldar, aka Silk. (Prince of Drasnia, but mostly a super spy who is super snarky and also kind of fucked up in the head)
Thing that bothers me: The main character could be super annoying sometimes, but he started out as fourteen, so you can forgive him. There was also a lot of clear cut "good guy/bad guy" stuff. You know, the followers of the evil god are evil, end of story. As I've grown older and more aware, it has some upsetting racial overtones. But by the end of the series when (spoiler!) the evil god is overthrown, Eddings definitely shows the evil god's people to be changing or at least have the capacity for change. Which is good. I don't like blatant "Good v. Evil" most of the time. Proof that they weren't necessarily acting of their own freewill made me happy.Character I would want to be: Probably Polgara the Sorceress. Because she's a sorceress. She's also just an incredible character. She's one of those mythical female characters that is a badass and also a kind and loving person, and has faults like male characters are given. Generally speaking, the female characters are done really well in this series. And Polgara is kind of the best.
Wow that was long.
