Dandelion ‘N’ Burdock

June Fic of the Month Interview - Astrophe
Welcome to the very first interview for Fic of the Month! We are happy to present the badge above to the lovely Natalie ( astrophe/ @stylesprimes ) who’s story “Dandelion and Burdock” was voted on by the Rooftop community for this FoM! Dana ( @paynethecreator ) interviewed Natalie this month!
We would first like to congratulate you on being the first author to be awarded Fic of the Month with your story Dandelion and Burdock! We would be honoured to ask you a few questions!
1. What encouraged or inspired you to write your story Dandelion and Burdock?
Answer: Well, the very root of the idea started when this picture (http://ohstylesno.tumblr.com/post/84051461429/wwadirectory-louteasdale-indie) appeared in April 2014, and I started tagging pictures of Harry as ‘indie hair.’ The tag eventually morphed into ‘mermaid hair,’ but that photo and caption was what kind of set off the thought of ‘indie Harry’ in my head. For me, if a fic idea is ever going to stick, it has to fester in my head for at least a few months. Fast forward to nearly a year later, and, I don’t know, I’m looking through some of my old posts as I write this to try and find things and I just found something I tagged as ‘i need an indie harry au like i need air’ about four months before I started posting D&B, and a couple of months before I started planning it. With all the fics I write, I always write something that I want to read, something that for whatever reason isn’t satisfied by the other fics that I’m reading.
As most people who follow my blog will know, I am a huge, huge fan of music and I’ve acquired quite a lot of knowledge about the industry, and so I was always eager to write a fic about a band on the brink of making it. But in terms of people encouraging me, the person most responsible for planting the idea in my head was a friend who I’m always exchanging music recs with and she got me going on the topic of indie Harry and I threw out like half a dozen ideas in one text, and some combination of those ideas have made it into D&B today. Another fic writer (note: I’ve sent a text to ask her if she’s comfortable being named in this interview) was also a huge help in the early stages of me planning this fic, but there’s countless others who I’ve bounced ideas off of because I’ve never been as uncertain as I have with certain parts of this fic. However, as of late as I’ve been struggling to finish up this story on occasion, my readers have been massively encouraging and supportive in more ways than I think they know, they are so patient and I truly am so lucky. With regards to the themes I explore and it being a uni AU, I am very much a ‘write what you know’ writer—I’m way too fucking lazy to spend hours upon hours doing research (hence why it’s also an indie AU). So, a lot of this fic is based on my personal experiences, philosophies, thoughts, and feelings, which I guess is one of the reasons why it’s absolutely terrifying to share sometimes? I do wanna clarify, though, that the experiences I’m basing D&B off of are a very curated, condensed, selection of experiences I’ve had—my life is pretty boring—so, I’m like taking these select exploits and stretching them out to encompass an entire world. And I guess I also wanted a change from Nom de Plume, which is very idealistic and not exactly realistic, and is written in a style that I was getting really, really tired of at the time, which is how the prose and ‘grit’ of D&B came to be. In a way, as I was struggling to wrap up NDP, I wanted to write an antithesis of it.
2. What was the first scene or idea you put to paper?
Answer: I know without a doubt that the first scene I wrote for D&B was the first one, I’m pretty sure I even started with that couch line—I’m pretty linear when it comes to starting fics! But in terms of ideas… it honestly may have been that scene in part ii where Frances walks in on Harry in the bathroom—if you’ve read it you know the one. But at the top of the notes doc in the D&B.scriv, the very first thing I have, written in all caps, is: “ENDED UP AT DENNY’S”
3. Are you a fan of planning a story with outlines, or more go-with-the-flow? What kind of planning have you done for this story? Do you write out of order, or chapter by chapter?
Answer: I could never really start writing a story without an ending in mind and at least a vague idea of how to get there, simply because I detest leaving stories unfinished, and having a vague idea of what I want to write about helps prevent that. However, at least once per story there’s generally a shake-up in which I end up redoing all of my initial outlining as I get a feel for my characters and the general vibe of the story. Because D&B is such a short story, I’ve had an outline for every chapter since I finished writing the first chapter, I think? I wanted to cut out anything unnecessary, and outlining helps that. The outline doc that contains every chapter has just general events and ideas for scenes—they can be pretty barren, just a couple of sentences. However, as I get closer to writing a chapter, the larger the outline for it will be (I add to it as I get a better idea of where the story will be at that point), and generally before I start writing writing a chapter I’ll make maybe a 500-700 word outline based on the shorter outline I already have (and considering D&B chapters fall around 3k, that’s pretty hefty), of more specific events, perhaps snippets of dialogue, just so I know exactly where I’m going with the chapter and it isn’t so daunting to sit down and write, like instead of writing from nowhere, I’m writing from somewhere. Of course, I don’t stick to it 100% of the time—in the latest chapter of D&B I wrote, I wrote according to my outline, hated it, and then changed it! I write chapter by chapter, however I always have the doc for next chapter started, so sometimes I’ll write small scenes, pieces of dialogue, or other bits while I’m writing the current chapter! With other fics I’ve written out of order, but D&B has been very linear so far. I like saving the scenes I’ve been excited to write as rewards for when I actually get there.
4. Are there any conditions in which you can’t write, or will only write during? (Such as music, writing after reading, school, etc?)
Answer: Kind of? The one like hard and fast rule I have is that if I’m in my room, my overhead light cannot be on. I am a very big fan of fairy lights so sometimes I’ll have those on, but lately I’ve been more in the mood to write like a ghoul in the dark, my face barely even illuminated by my computer screen because I write w blue or green text on a black background. And while I was still in Europe and writing the first chapters of D&B, I always had some unscented candles burning in my dorm, and sometimes I’ll still work by candlelight! Other than that, I’ve pretty much written anywhere (… including in class) and everywhere in my notebook that I haul around with me—planes, trains, sidewalk cafes, the beach, on the bus, but I really get my best work done in a dark room. Anything I write in my notebook generally needs a fair amount of editing once I type it up. Music playing is always 50/50, it often depends on what scene I’m writing and if I have the right playlist for it. I also can’t write fic if I’ve already read fic that day—for whatever reason I don’t have a problem if I’ve read something else that day, but for whatever reason fic screws me up and I find myself mimicking the style of the last thing I read? It’s weird! I also tend to write best in the evenings, but only if I’ve gotten enough accomplished that day and don’t have anything else that I really should be doing—finishing a productive day with a good writing session feels like I’m keeping the ball rolling. But I do try my best to write at least a bit every night that I’m not out of the house!
5. Would you say that you relate with Frances in any way? If so, how?
Answer: It's about to get a little personal here... I also don't want to give a different answer of less relevance because that would go directly against what I'm trying to do with this story. I like to put one element of myself into each of my characters, write what you know and all that--Frances is very different from me in many ways, but one thing we do have in common is inner slut-shaming. I've kind of implied this while answering some asks where readers have said they've been in similar situations as Frances, but it's about time that I state it explicitly--I've had some one night stands, ones that were uglier than the one portrayed in D&B, and afterward I felt used, cheap, dirty, every adjective I've used in D&B, even though at the time I considered myself a feminist and knew there was nothing wrong with casual sex. Writing Frances' struggles and inner monologue in a way has been really cathartic in working through my own issues and lingering negative feelings toward those encounters. And what has almost been even more helpful is hearing from readers and that they've gone through the exact same thing that I did. As much as I hate to hear that so many other girls have experienced that same awful headspace that I did and what I went through is something I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy, it's been ultimately comforting to hear that I'm not alone.
6. What would you say has been the easiest scene/chapter to write (be it the one that flowed from you easiest or your favourite) AND the scene/chapter hardest for you to write thus far? How often do you write?
Answer: If we’re looking at solely the writing process, and which chapters came to be without much effort, I would say part x, where Frances and Harry have that talk in the snow, or part xiii, which is the chapter where they got Lollapalooza. However, emotionally, part xiii and part xiv were incredibly hard to write—I cried a lot, though because there was that emotion there it was easy to write. In terms of actually writing the chapter, part v was really daunting to write, because I hadn’t posted any D&B for nearly six months, and part xvi had to be rewritten several times. And I try to write every day that I’m home in the evening! I’ve kind of dropped the ball on it lately, as I’ve been working/going out a lot, but as soon as I’m done answering this question I plan on looking at the next chapter of D&B—even sitting down and writing for 15 minutes is better than not writing at all.
7. Who is your favorite character in the story? Why?
Answer: This! Is! Really! Difficult! I really can’t choose between Frances and Harry… I just feel very protective over Harry for various reasons, some of which I can’t explain just because there’s backstory we haven’t gotten into. And I still feel very protective over Frances, but believe it or not, another reason why she’s my favourite is how she really stands up for herself and she’s pretty damn tough.
8. Take this time to send a message to your readers! And self promo any of your accounts so new readers can find you!
Answer: I think I've made it clear throughout this interview, but I'll definitely say one last time how deeply and wholeheartedly appreciative I am of my readers. Some of my readers have become close friends of mine, but anyone who takes the time to click on and read my stories has a special place in my heart, especially those who take the time to send me a message, even though I'm pretty shit at getting back to them on time. Without them I don't think I would have finished any of my stories, so I really owe a lot to them and can't thank my readers enough! I don't know what I did to be fortunate to acquire such an intelligent, thoughtful, and kind base of readers, but I never take them for granted. And in terms of self promo, there isn't much! I'll be finishing up D&B before summer ends if all goes well and the only places to find me are at stylesprimes on tumblr or at astrophe on 1DFF. Thank you so so much for giving me this opportunity and interviewing me, Dana!! I've really really enjoyed answering your questions, apologies for the really long answers!
