I had the pleasure of seeing a Dane Lovett exhibition at Sullivan + Strumpf on the weekend. After being petty much bedridden for a month, it was such a rewarding experience to head out and see some art! We got to 5 galleries, saw 9 shows....but this painting show is the one that's stuck in my mind. 'Nightshades' was a simple show, but there was something to seeing these dark little windows into other worlds in person. They came alive in front of your eyes, transporting you somewhere else atmospherically. From a distance the works looked quite photographic, but on approach you saw the paint was quite loose, made up of brush marks and thin painterly layers. The combination of dark and shiny makes it difficult to see the painting without manoeuvring around the sheen of the spotlights. Like hidden images that you can unpack. Like dark water you can't see into.
