I refuse to write anything not going into canon so I put way too much effort into this one
Fun fact, the bit at the end was taken from another time I tried to write this exact scenario
It was the end of the year in Neocity, and all the Paladins were having a blast.
Well, now that they knew that every light festival was dedicated to them in some way.
Ruby was ecstatic to see a tournament entirely dedicated to the Red Paladin.
Jay enjoyed the feasts dedicated to the Orange Paladin.
Blaze was dazzled by the fireworks dedicated to the Yellow Paladin.
Rina cherished the stories and sermons shared in honor of the Green Paladin.
Turqbalt… felt awkward at the various costumes worn for the Cyan Paladin. But he was grateful to sleep in, in honor of the Blue Paladin.
Amethyst was excited to get gifts in celebration of the Violet Paladin.
And Rose…
Rose didn’t have anyone for Pink Paladin Day. But she was happy nonetheless. In a celebration meant for love, she cherished the non-romantic loves, such as the one she held for the life and opportunity she’d been given.
What she’d been most excited for, however, wasn’t her own celebration, but rather…
“It’s Cobalt’s birthday!” she exclaimed as the Paladins walked around the newest festival in the end of the year, 8 day celebration of the Paladins. Everything was pink in honor of the Pink Paladin, though various couples shared heart-shaped, rose-flavored cookies and chocolate strawberries. But of course, Rose was more excited for Cobalt’s birthday.
“HELL yeah, Rose!” Ruby said, giving her a fist bump. Of course, the two were single. And Ruby’s body pillow of Cobalt didn’t count.
“Oh, yeah. Cobalt’s birthday is Pink Day.” Jay said. They felt awkward standing around, but their eyes flew towards any of the food booths the priestesses were operating.
“Wait, doesn’t he hate Pink Day? I remember he used to get very moody during Pink Day.” Blaze said.
“Nah, nah,” Ruby jumped in, “He hates the FEBRUARY Pink Day, but he’s usually excited for his birthday.”
Amethyst was too busy hugging her newest plush bunny. She’d gotten it for Violet Day, and nuzzled her face into its soft tummy. Pulling herself back to reality, she realized she didn’t remember specific holidays.
“Wait, why does he hate Pink Day but not his birthday? What’s Pink Day, again?” she asked.
“Well, Pink Day is-”
“BLAH BLAH Pink Day is for looove, but oopsie doopsie gotta have the ROMANCE and the KISSY KISSY and the ULTRA FUCKING! Blah blah February is Pink Month so there’s a Pink Day Festival in February, though December has ANOTHER Pink Day at the end of the year ‘cause I guess the last EIGHT DAYS are dedicated to US and Rose is last ‘cause she’s small and cute and adorable THEN IT’S JANUARY which is like, dedicated to White Light and something. But then Cobalt’s also born on December 31st. So like. S’weird.”
Ruby let herself be interrupted by Jay. She was constantly amused by Jay’s hefty explanations.
Ruby cleared her throat.
“So like, Cobalt usually loves his birthday! Both Turquoise and Cobalt are always excited for it. He always gets moody over Pink Day, though that’s usually in February.” she explained.
“Speaking of, Rinaaa-” Blaze teased, nudging at Rina’s shoulder. “You should do something for him! S’Pink Day!”
“What?!” Rina exclaimed.
“C’mon! Birthday time! He’s birthday boy! Birthday man! Birthday! We literally JUST celebrated mine, uh, one two three four five six seve- SEVEN DAYS AGO!” Ruby nudged.
“Well yeah, but your perfect birthday celebration is Cobalt buying you a pizza.” Rina huffed.
“I’m a simple girl! I’m a simple woman!! I see the pizza and I eat it!” Ruby exclaimed. “I like throwin’ parties for my favorite blue boy, man! He wants cake! And presents! And karaoke-!”
“Did Cobalt ever like the karaoke or was it just a Prism Prison thing?” Blaze asked.
“...I mean, he only asked me for singing lessons last month BUT HE LIKES KARAOKE!” Ruby once again exclaimed.
Nearby pedestrians gave a confused stare at her enthusiasm. They proceeded to walk faster to get away from her shouting.
Everyone ignored the judgmental stares. “C’mon, Rina!” Blaze said, “It’s Pink Day, couples lap this shit up! Make it extra special for him! Suck face like he’s a popsicle!”
Jay shuddered in disgust. Amethyst cringed in solidarity.
“We can make this the best blue birthday ever! It’s Pink Day! It’s his b-day! We can end this year by chugging sodas and getting sent into food comas!” Ruby exclaimed.
Rina fiddled with her thumbs as Ruby jumped around about partying.
“Well-”
“Where should we celebrate? At Vanilla Cream Cafe?”
“I honestly-”
“He likes mango cake, so we could get him that!”
“Actually-”
“You think he needs more sweaters? More sweaters would be an easy gift for hi-”
“I haven’t talked to him directly since summer, okay!?!”
Ruby stopped jumping around. The other Paladins widened their eyes in shock. Except for Jay, who instead gave Rina a piercing glare. Ruby was the first to break the silence.
“You… haven’t talked to him?” she said, somewhat heartbroken.
Blaze cleared her throat. “Whatdya mean you haven’t talked to him DIRECTLY?” she asked.
“...I just. Haven’t talked to him! I haven’t had a reason to! He’s fine-” Rina said nervously.
“Shit’s not fucking fine!” Jay seethed. Everyone turned to look at them. They were shaking. “You’ve been playing with his god damned emotions this entire damned time. He’d been convinced you broke up, and yet according to Blaze you still refer to him as a boyfriend? That’s fucking confusing!” Jay seemed to open their mouth to want to say something more, but closed it. Ruby placed a hand on their shoulder.
“Maybe he’s waiting for himself to talk to you?” Rose asked.
“I… don’t think so. Cobalt can get pretty reclusive when he’s stressed.” Ruby replied.
Rina’s heart sank. Blaze simply looked her up and down.
“You know, I think he’s scared of you.” she said.
“Wh- Me? Why would he be scared of me?” Rina asked.
Blaze pulled her aside, semi-worried that Jay would rip her to shreds or Ruby would chew her out.
“You were really hard on him during fall. The guy’s been running on fumes since the Dioscuri Tournament and you definitely haven’t helped during the scuffle with the Pyrrhics.”
“I…”
“You treated Her like she was no big deal when Cobalt got taken hostage! Shouldn’t that bother you? Having no control over your own body? Having to hide yourself for so long? Hell, the dude’s rushed his own recovery because he missed you so much!”
Rina said nothing.
“I think you owe him an apology.”
Ruby snuck her head into their conversation.
“You need more than just an apology. If you were so dead set on proving that he's a nutty screw-up, you should be dead set on proving that you actually care about him.”
“I’ll talk to him.”
“No-no, here’s the plan. We’re gonna throw him a cool party. You’re gonna distract him and keep him away from the house.” Ruby ordered.
“Where is he, anyway?” asked Rose. Amethyst shrugged.
“He hasn’t been active in the group chat since Red Day. He showed up at Lavender’s with some gifts, but otherwise he’s been MIA since Orange Day. I can’t blame him though; Tigerlily freaked out on Yellow Day from the fireworks so I’m not surprised if he skipped out from the noise.” she said.
“I felt that.” Jay added.
Ruby broke up Rina and Blaze by squeezing in-between them.
“Here’s the plan, guys. Blaze, you and I are gonna hunt for food, cake, and decorations. Once we get the decorations, Amethyst and Rose can hang at Balt’s place and hang them up. You two’re good at making things pretty! Rina over here is gonna distract our beloved blue primary color.”
“Er, what can I do?” Jay asked.
“Jay! You can get him a gift!” Ruby cheered.
“Wh- me??” Jay fumbled.
“Blah blah, PALADINS,. DISASSEMBLE!” Ruby shouted. Her form burst into sparkles of red light faster than anyone could blink. A red wisp of light grabbed onto Blaze, turning her into a yellow wisp of light from the force. Ruby dragged Blaze to the Vanilla Cream Cafe, leaving a trail of electric orange behind them.
Amethyst held Rose’s hand and sunk into the shadow of a nearby building. The two disappeared, Amethyst guiding Rose in her shadowy teleportation.
Rina turned around, hoping for even a sliver of advice, even if it came from the raging Jay. Instead, she turned just in time to see them awkwardly walking away.
“I don’t know what Cobalt likes, he’s a dude! What do dudes like? What do icy dudes like? Popsicles? Ice trays? Ruby said he likes sweaters, but I don’t know his size! I don’t even know what style he likes! What if I get him a mug? I like mugs. But what if he sees it as a lazy gift and I’m a shitty person? He’s blue, I can get him something blue! What’s blue? I don’t know. I know he likes oranges like a HEATHEN. But like, I’d feel weird walking into a store and buying oranges! Maybe I should go home and make him a bracelet… I’d like making things. Am I running out of blue beads though? Should I stop by the store and buy some? Is a bracelet even a good idea? Fuck, I need to walk fuckin’ everywhere…”
Their voice trailed off as they walked the opposite direction.
Rina sighed as she put on her helmet and revved up her motorcycle.
…
Meanwhile in the Rose Residences, Cobalt sat in his bed wrapping a present.
Pink Day.
He had wanted to show his gratitude towards the young Pink Paladin, and was finishing up wrapping what he had gotten her; a small, strawberry-shaped side purse he’d commissioned from Maren. While Pink Day wasn’t specifically a gift-giving holiday, Cobalt thought it was fitting considering it was a celebration of the Paladins. If he already knew the Pink Paladin, why shouldn’t he give tribute to her? Romance holidays were never his favorite, anyway.
As he looped the gift bag around his wrist, Shiro got up and sniffed it carefully. Cobalt gave him a pet.
“Think she’ll like it, Shiro? I hope it’s not creepy; she’s a good kid and I respect that.” he said to him. Shiro continued to smile, like all Samoyeds would. He didn’t understand anything; his daddy was talking and that was enough to make him excited.
What made him even more excited was the sound of the motorcycle outside. Shiro barked happily and ran towards the front door. Cobalt sighed and stretched as he followed.
“R-Rina…?” Cobalt mumbled as he opened the door and saw her standing there, a bouquet of roses in her hand.
“Hey.” she greeted. “Happy Birthday, Cobalt.”

This one took a lot out of me because Cobalt losing his arm is THE "SUL is too dark for kids" moment I want for its hopefully-not-so-hypothetical-future animated series 👉👈
There's a lot of details about this scene that I keep rearranging, changing, adding, or subtracting, but one of my newest developments is the sheer horror of "Ruby seeing the unstoppable Cobalt Zaffre struggle to even stand up" 👀
So last year I did the color wheel challenge......... only to change my art style a few months afterward 😭😭😭 I wanted at least ONE updated art of all the Paladins, especially since the past year has been a huge revamp for a few of them, so I decided to redraw my color wheel after my friend @/doodlebless started doing it this month!
