considerations re: political magics
I’m just going to throw this out here. Things are going to be ramping up even more for primaries and elections and all that and I know some of ya’ll are going to be wanting to do magic to try and influence things. Now, it was tried before, remember? The whole thing trying to bind Trump and all that? Worked greaaaat. Some will argue it didn’t work because there were other people working against it, etc, etc. But I’d like to make two suggestions, speaking as a constituent of Mitch McConnell (please help): 1) don’t fucking tell everybody what you’re doing on social media and 2) do your magic to bolster and support the candidate you want to win
Believe me, if cursing was that effective, McConnell wouldn’t have been in office as long as he has. The problem has been the opposition running extremely weak candidates and basically not really doing any marketing for them.
On a side note, also give shit time to work. The night of the election? That’s too fucking late. Do it early, give the magic time to work. On a second side note, putting that bit of positivity into the world by focusing on the candidate you want to win will help with the general atmosphere. There’s too much hate right now. Plus, as any train engineer can tell you, it’s easier to get things going than to stop them.
Also, as I will always advise, if you really care that much, do the mundane stuff--volunteer, put a sign in your yard (or window) for your candidates, donate, and of course, actually go to the poll and vote (which I assume most of you who give a shit do already). I’m a huge fan of mundane solutions, maybe it’s all that Terry Pratchett I’ve read.
Disclaimer: I do not endorse using magic for political gains nor do I endorse any political candidates but goddamn it if you’re going to do it, do it right
The Dangers of Treating Characters Like Real People
The Dangers of Treating Characters Like Real People
Make your characters real!
This is advice you hear all over the place when it comes to character development, and it’s … okay advice. I mean, think about, readers (or moviegoers) don’t want to sit through eight hours of a novel or two hours of a movie around a character that is so over-the-top they cannot identify with the character. (You know, unless they do.)

What Are You Trying to Prove?
Back in the day, whenever I was up to my usual antics of being a fucking weirdo, my mum would often comment to me, “What are you trying to prove?” As in, by doing whatever I was doing, who was I trying to impress?
Well, my conversation with Mary Jane came up with some interesting thoughts that might be worth mentioning. That has to be the question that we should always ask of ourselves. What our driving force is, how to maintain momentum or ease into a slower pace, a slightly out of reach goal that keeps us sane whilst waking up at 6 every morning and finally finding your free time between the hours of 8:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.
You live your live everyday and you can choose to be hamster that lives in its cage until its final twitch, or you can be the rogue rodent that makes it out of the cage, and risk the freedom of a front yard, or the harsh reality of a Firestone. Or just be the hamster who yearns for something more than food and the fascinating shutter effect that is probably the rudimentary idea behind “motion pictures” when he’s getting fit. No, this hamster is aware that there is perhaps a better world out there, but food is constant, there’s shelter, nobody’s trying to swallow it, and there was only a strange incident whereas it had the freedom to roam, but only within the confines of the owner’s naked body.
Trying to prove to your spouse you’re good enough, trying to earn that father of the year cup you just received for Christmas, trying to prove to your mother that moving to a new country for a fresh start was the best decision she’s ever made for your life... there are millions of variations of what you’re trying to prove and to whom. Even without the co-dependence that is implied, you may just be trying to prove that you’re brave enough - with the minimal strength to be able to get your ass over to that girl over there, and just smile and say hi. Without the boner this time, preferably.
So if you find yourself in a looping dump, with nothing to live for, cancel that Uber call to the bridge. Try to prove someone wrong.
