Semmy Schilt vs. Daniel Ghita - GLORY 4 Tokyo
On December 31, 2012 Glory co-promoted a card with now defunct MMA promotion DREAM for a NYE card in Japan. For their portion of the card, the newly formed kickboxing promotion decided to put together a 16 man, one night heavyweight tournament. While the division wasn't great shakes back then, long past the strongest days of the K-1 GP, it still had some solid names. Anderson "Braddock" Silva, Remy Bojansky, Errol Zimmerman, a young Rico Verhoeven, Gokhan Saki, Jamal Ben Saddik, etc. And of course, Semmy Schilt and Daniel Ghita.
While I can't remember if Schilt, then like in his late 30s was the favorite to win the whole tournament, I can't imagine who else would have been (aside from Saki). He'd basically beaten half the field and was ranked #1 heading into it. Not to mention his 4 K-1 Grand Prix wins. Not really beating that experience. Ghita, ranked third because he entered the tournament with recent losses to Saki and Schilt, came out the other side of the bracket.
This would be Semmy Schilt's last fight before retiring, as he discovered soon after he had a heart condition that made fighting even more dangerous for his health.
