"How To Make The Light Come," Daniel Hales

Look at me, I’m introducing myself to the slush mound the plow left at the foot of our driveway. I’m extricating the matted clump from the cat’s ruff as National Public Radio plays me a scherzo. I change in front of the window to prove I’m naked. I’m addicted to not dying ever. I’m making the light come I’m showing the light who’s boss.

Make a list of people whose lips have touched your own. A separate one for mermaids. It’s hard to argue with some of the things the Dalai Lama says “the sunset wants nothing from us we have nothing to give it in return for this” right before Judas kissed him. How many first dates at Chinese restaurants hoping the fortune cookie will instruct you to kiss on the lips to incorporate tongues. Or the time we found the fascicle hidden beneath the mattress and how it felt later to kiss while each held a corner of it in Emily’s moonlit garden. I’ve heard there are as many kinds of kissing as there are of listening. Strange civilizations teem inside each brain. Think about how many gallons of water you have drunk how many gallons of water there are inside you. Then a list of the people you want to kiss but haven’t yet.
