The Pesce family tree as it stands today 9-21-18
The closed-casket funeral of Daniel Pesce.
Daniel had taken an interest in astronomy. Many nights after work he took his telescope out and stargazed for hours and listened to the cries of the seagulls and the crashing of the waves against the shore.
Tonight the sky was purple with the sunset and he stood on the beach, alone and at peace and thinking of the future. He had many things on his mind. A new girl, for instance, that he was planning on pursuing. Her name was Celia. She was 18 and had just married her high school sweetheart, one of Daniel’s own cousins. He considered this and was thrilled at the challenge of the new conquest. Of course, nothing Celia had ever said or done had given him the impression that she might want him. But he wanted her, and he was determined to get her. He missed the challenge of getting a new mistress. It was a game to him. He gazed through the telescope and thought lustful thoughts of the girl, his cousin’s new bride. He had been watching her for a while and had been waiting for her to have her birthday. He imagined how it would be - the first time together. He rehearsed the lines he would use. They were tried and true. He had no doubt that they would work as they had worked in the past.
Suddenly every nerve ending in his body cried out a warning. He was terrified, his mouth dry and skin clammy.
Daniel didn’t understand his own reaction. He straightened up from the telescope and scanned the night sky, not really knowing why. There was nothing there - just a bluish-purple sky rapidly fading to black, speckled here and there with stars. He shrugged his shoulders and returned to the telescope, telling himself that he had never feared getting a girlfriend, and he was too old to start now.
The warning deep within him was repeated, more intensely than before. Daniel again straightened and looked up to the sky. Then he saw it - light, streaking down from the sky. He stared, incredulous, as this light burned brighter and brighter, growing larger and larger. What was it? He stood frozen, mute with terror. Suddenly, he understood. It was too late to run, too late to hide. Death was his.
Instinctively, he covered his head with his hands. The world went white as it exploded into heat and flame and pain - and then, curiously, he felt nothing at all as the white heat around him suddenly became him. Daniel’s ruined, mangled body lay beneath the meteor, and the spirit of the man swirled out of it, upward, into the cooling sky above.
