I didn't realize that Schlereth was on the 60-Day DL. What happened to him?
Schlereth down, Weber up
Daniel Schlereth, after starting off the season with terrible results, was sent down to Triple-A Toledo, and Thad Weber was called up to take his place. Weber has a 0.75 ERA in 12 IP down in Toledo, while Schlereth had posted monstrous numbers (and not the good kind) with the Tigers, having an ERA of 12.60 and a WHIP of 3.20 in 5 IP, not to mention 11 hits and 5 walks in that span. It's about damn time they sent him down to tune up. It'll give him some time to clear his mind and hopefully find his good stuff again while we give a new guy a chance to prove himself. His Triple-A numbers are outstanding, lets hope he can keep it going at the big league level.
Detroit Tigers Weekly Recap
The Tigers finished the week with a 3-3 record after sweeping the opening series from the Boston Red Sox. They took two out of three games vs. the Tampa Bay Rays at Comerica Park, and then only beat the White Sox one of the three games at U.S. Cellular Field. The offense slowed down quite a bit once the Tigers hit the road, but Gerald Laird sparked the Tigers offense to a win the series finale to prevent a sweep by Chicago. The Tigers will enter the next week in first place by 0.5 games over the White Sox.
We saw the season debuts of starting pitchers Drew Smyly and Adam Wilk, who both pitched decent in their starts. Smyly started off rocky, gained some control, but ultimately had to be replaced in the 5th inning due to lack of control. I look forward to seeing if he can stay in control a little more in his next start. Adam Wilk pitched well, giving up two earned runs in five innings. He had to be taken out of the game after being hit by a foul ball in the dugout off the bat of Prince Fielder. It sounds like he should be okay to make his next start.
Game of the Week
This week’s game of the week was the 5-2 win vs. the Rays on Tuesday. The Rays’ rookie phenom, Matt Moore, was the starting pitcher in this game matched up against Rick Porcello for the Tigers. This was very much a pitcher’s duel for most of the game, and featured a bit of snow throughout the day.
They Rays started the scoring on the day in the top of the 3rd inning when Rick Porcello walked Evan Longoria with the bases loaded. The Tigers quickly tied the game in the bottom of the 3rd when Austin Jackson scored on a wild pitch by Matt Moore. The game did not see another run scored until the 7th inning when Desmond Jennings drove Jose Molina home with an infield single. As the Tigers did in the 3rd inning, they once again answered the Rays’ score with a 2-out solo home run by Austin Jackson, his first of the season. Matt Moore was then replaced by Jake McGee, who finished the inning. Phil Coke then pitched a scoreless top of the 8th inning, replacing Rick Porcello. The bottom of the 8th inning is when the Tigers’ offense finally got it going. Miguel Cabrera started the inning with a double to deep right center and scored on a single by Prince Fielder. Burke Badenhop, who was traded to the Marlins by the Tigers in the Cabrera/Willis trade, took the mound next for the Rays. Delmon Young was the first batter that Badenhop faced, and Young singled off him, moving Fielder to 2nd base. Clete Thomas (now a Minnesota Twin) ran for Young. Jim Leyland called for a hit and run, and Ryan Raburn grounded the ball to shortstop. Clete Thomas slid into 2nd base before the throw made it to the base, so the Rays only got one out at first base. Jhonny Peralta followed Raburn’s groundout with a sacrifice fly, scoring Fielder to make the score 4-2. The next batter was Gerald Laird, making his first start of the season, and he singled to center scoring Clete Thomas. Jose Valverde pitched a scoreless 9th for his first save of the season, and the Tigers won 5-2.
Moment of the Week
I am 29 years old and have been watching baseball for as long as I can remember. I have never seen anything like what happened in the first inning on Friday vs. the White Sox. Jake Peavy was pitching for the White Sox, and absolutely blew away Austin Jackson and Brennan Boesch for two strikeouts to start the game. Miguel Cabrera comes to the plate, stands where he normally would stand, and his back foot was way behind the back line of the batter’s box. A. J. Pierzynski pointed it out to the umpire where Cabrera’s foot was, but Cabrera made the claim that the batter’s box was not the correct size. He was absolutely correct. The game was delayed for about ten minutes while the grounds crew re-chalked the batter’s box to the correct size. It did not help the Tigers’ batters on that day, but I am not sure we will ever see that happen again.
Stud of the Week
Rick Porcello – He started two games this week, both Tiger wins, and pitched at least seven innings in each start. Here were his stats for the week: 1-0, 14.2 IP, 12 H, 3 ER, 8 K, 1 BB, 1.84 ERA, .226 BAA, and 0.89 WHIP. He was the first Tigers’ starter to win a game this year with a win on Sunday vs. the White Sox. With the uncertainty with the Tigers’ rotation, Porcello needs to keep up this consistency. Right now, I trust him more when he is on the mound than I do Max Scherzer.
Dud of the Week
Daniel Schlereth – This is not counting giving up a home run on his first pitch to Adrian Gonzalez in the Boston series. Here is his line for this week: 2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 1 HR, 3 BB, 3 K. On the season he has a 9.00 ERA, 2.50 WHIP, and .369 BAA. Left-handed batters are hitting .333 against him. I hope he can turn it around, but this has not been a good start for him. Leyland should stick to using Phil Coke in high pressure situations where a lefty is needed because Schlereth is not getting it done. In fact, Mark Schlereth may need to pass down his nickname to his son…Stink.
Leyland Questionable Decision of the Week
Brandon Inge started at DH on Sunday vs. the White Sox. This needs no further explanation.

Ryan Perry and Daniel Schlereth both came from Arizona
So if you're looking for something to blame, point southwest.
These two are the Wildcats' gift to the Tigers.
Wow Schlereth cleaned up the base paths.
Can't say I'm surprised.
Max Scherzer + Daniel Schlereth = Schlerzer?!?
Jim Thome's 600th home run.
