Did Zero Waste Daniel Predict The Death Of Fashion As We Know It? Good News Notes: "Like many aspiring fashion designers, Daniel Silverstein found inspiration for what would become his life’s work in the classroom.
‘Package Free’ The First Zero-Waste Store Is Coming To New York City This Spring Zero-waste, the concept of not sending any waste to landfills has been steadily gaining ground among socially conscious consumers. Americans send about 1,871 pounds of waste a year or five pound of waste a day, according to a study published in the Nature Climate Change journal. Five pounds, that’s quite a load. Zero-waste living hasn’t gone full mainstream yet, but with Package Free, a new lifestyle pop-up store coming in May, it very well could. Lauren Singer, who started the zero waste blog Trash is for Tossers, and Daniel Silverstein, who started the zero-waste fashion brand Zero Waste Daniel, are the duo behind the concept. Package Free will open in Williamsburg from May 1 to July and will carry environmental alternatives to conventional single use items like reusable tote bags, compostable toothbrushes, refillable dental floss, natural beauty products in bulk and other lifestyle products like skateboards made from ocean plastic. Package Free will also serve as an educational space for sustainable living. There will be information on where every product comes from, how it’s made, and how it can become part of daily life. Silverstein and Singer selected each brand based on their commitment to end global waste. Events will also be part of the experience. Classes on mending clothing, making soaps, and making your own food will teach people alternatives to buying plastic wrapped products. Trash, your days are numbered. The Ethical Writers Co Hosts Zero Waste Fashion Event (Photos)
Along with Daniel Silverstein, the Ethical Writers Coalition (EWC) hosted an intimate discussion with the prominent zero waste fashion designer at his studio in New York.
Daniel Silverstein Talks Zero Waste Fashion
Last Thursday marked the third event of the Ethical Writers Coalition: a talk with zero waste fashion designer, Daniel Silverstein. Zero waste is a revival of what used to be traditional practices: eat all the parts, use all the scraps, don't waste anything. It's being a good steward of your materials and appreciating the time and energy that went into their production. While working in the conventional fashion industry, Daniel saw materials being unnecessarily thrown out and knew he wanted to disrupt that pattern of waste. He reinvented the way he designed, cut, and produced clothing and in the process reinvented himself. Daniel is now a leader in the art of zero waste design and the packed room of students and designers we hosted confirms that there is growing interest in the zero waste movement.
As Juliette Donatelli of Spades + SiLK spoke with Daniel about his history, we learned that his is a true conversion story. The waste he witnessed in the fashion industry bothered him so much, he felt he had no choice but to leave. With the goal of producing the least amount of waste, Daniel re-works his designs until they produce only scraps of fabric which he later uses in other projects. All of his gorgeous pieces are created in his NYC studio by him and a small group of employees.
After the talk, we went into Daniel's studio to learn more about his zero waste design process. He explained how he created a box-cut tee (modeled by Alden of EcoCult), showed us one year's worth of scraps of fabric, and talked about some of his future projects.
After the Q & A, attendees were treated to cupcakes from Little Cupcake Bakeshop. Jacquelyn of The Stylish Kind brought the fair trade wine we served in Susty Party compostable cups. Attendees were also able to shop Daniel's collection and get his advice on sizing and style. Emma Grady of Past Fashion Future dished out sustainable style advice as she shopped while friend and model for Daniel's The Piece Project, Lauren Singer of Trash is for Tossers, was there to lend her support.

Ethical Writers Co. x Daniel Silverstein
The Ethical Writers Coalition are hosting our third event: a conversation with zero waste designer Daniel Silverstein.
Daniel Silverstein is a NYC designer pioneering the art of zero waste fashion. The conventional fashion industry is incredibly wasteful with fifteen to twenty percent of fabric scraps ending up in landfills. Zero waste designers strive to use every scrap generated by their work. To that end, Silverstein recently completed The Piece Project, a limited-edition collection for this season using only what he had already in the studio. His sophisticated designs can also be found at Yoox, Bona Drag, and Saks Fifth Avenue.
If you are in NYC, join the Ethical Writers Co. for a conversation with Silverstein over organic wine and cupcakes from Little Cupcake Bakeshop. Ask questions, get a peek at his studio, learn about his techniques, and educate yourself as a consumer on how you can positively impact the industry. Then, shop his latest collection with Silverstein on hand to answer all your questions!
Get your free ticket here.
Even if you aren't in NYC, you can still check out Silverstein's unique collections on his website and on Yoox.

Fashion designer Daniel Silverstein creates virtually zero-waste couture using fabric scraps.
Earth911 featured a great article about Daniel Silverstein in their style section a few days ago. They included a story Daniel wrote on his website not long ago about a surprising experience he had recently with at a factory owner in the Garment District.
'I am so distraught,' he writes. 'I just left a meeting where I wanted to have garments cut out, and the factory owner could not understand why I would save my fabric scraps. She also did not understand they were artfully laid out to be appliquéd on to the dresses after the pieces had been cut.
'She told me she pays more than $500 per month to have her scraps removed, and thrown into landfills because her business is so wasteful.
This is not the only factory in the Garment District creating waste like this, and this is not only an acceptable practice to the industry, this is the only practice.'
It's important to remember how far the industry has come, but we must all remember how much more it needs to improve.
