After Nine Years, Blood is the New Black's Founder Steps Down

A bit of sad news people!

Racked LA called it the end of an era as  Mitra Khayyam hands over Blood is The New Black to new licensees. The t-shirt and jersey clothing company will continue, but without Mitra at the head.

Mitra spoke about her decision to sell the company, which she founded at 23, with Racked calling it "that cute baby kitten you want to keep but can't."

We definitely empathize with Mitra, our showroom founder will also step down (more on that later) which makes Mitra's decision to leave Blood is The New Black all the more significant.

Mitra will, however, be continuing with the Midnight Rider brand, which should be a relief to many, as we know that brand will soon be just as popular as Blood is The New Black.

The Sway Announced SOURCE Award Brand Leader For 2013

  We are proud to announce that The Sway was chosen the winner of the Global SOURCE Award For Sustainable Fashion 2013 Brand leader: Accessories!

On December 3rd, The Ethical Fashion Forum announced The Sway, winner of the SOURCE Award for Accessories, recognizing excellence in design, fashion business and sustainability.

The SOURCE Awards put the spotlight on the most innovative and inspirational businesses, individuals and initiatives in the fashion industry, from field to final product, promoting and raising visibility for growing, sustainable brands and businesses.

Winners were selected by an illustrious judging panel that included Editor of Vogue.co.uk, Dolly Jones, Brigitte Steppitus, Head of Couture at Vivienne Westwood and Amber Valletta, supermodel and champion for sustainable fashion, amongst others.  On Tuesday pioneering fashion businesses, press and key industry figures met at the House of Lords in London, for the 2013 SOURCE Awards Winner announcements, hosted by Baroness Lola Young, OBE and Founder of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Ethics and Sustainability.

In the 7 years of running the awards, this is our most inspiring line up yet.

Fashion designer Daniel Silverstein creates virtually zero-waste couture using fabric scraps.

Earth911 featured a great article about Daniel Silverstein in their style section a few days ago. They included a story Daniel wrote on his website not long ago about a surprising experience he had recently with at a factory owner in the Garment District. 

'I am so distraught,' he writes. 'I just left a meeting where I wanted to have garments cut out, and the factory owner could not understand why I would save my fabric scraps. She also did not understand they were artfully laid out to be appliquéd on to the dresses after the pieces had been cut.

'She told me she pays more than $500 per month to have her scraps removed, and thrown into landfills because her business is so wasteful.

This is not the only factory in the Garment District creating waste like this, and this is not only an acceptable practice to the industry, this is the only practice.'

It's important to remember how far the industry has come, but we must all remember how much more it needs to improve.
