I guess I should start by saying that the core premise of the book is interesting. I had never heard of a purple person. But Penny (the protagonist) explains that purple is made when blue and red work together, between that and the list it basically means that it is someone who is an inquisitive individual who co-operates with others to make the world better. The message throughout the book is simple enough, individuality, co-operation and confidence. The three steps to being that sort of person are reiterated in the list I've included. Honestly, the message in the book is relevant to all.

The art and story work together to make a cute book. It is colourful with a story and a message that children likely need to hear. Diversity is shown readily, with various ages, races, religions and abilities. Most but not all of the adult characters are caucasian, they are the family of the protagonist. It is not overly purple for a book so focused on purple. The word purple is always bold and purple but other that it feels more like regular incidental use of the colour than deliberate use. For a book, I picked up because the title piqued my interest I'm more than happy with this. Any book that makes effort to show the level of diversity this does needs more recognition. It's also a surprisingly good both a debut children's book and as an offering from a celebrity author. It is possible that Bell wrote a book that she felt was missing from that market and wanted for her own children.
