she is not beautiful, and this is something that she has always known. (her hair is dirtwater blonde where her mother's had been gold, her cheeks burning red and freckled and her dark eyes set just a tad too far apart) she is plain, and so she knows well enough that being plain does not mean being soft. (she grits her crooked teeth and wipes the dirt off of her scabby knees and she lets herself be gruff and wild and callous, lets her broad shoulders push back and her voice grow louder) she is plain, and this means that life is easier and harder and in some ways, so is she. (she meets a boy one summer who looks at her and keeps looking - who seems past the awkward, crooked smiles and the scabby knees and the too-thin nose and sees the truth) she is plain, and so she had long ago accepted that she would live a life where she went unnoticed (her hair is the color of hay, but plain girls walk with witches, with demons - plain girls learn to build magic with their too-large hands and so a plain girl can easily learn how to turn straw into gold) she is not beautiful, and this has taught her a great many things, but do not let it convince you that she isn't dangerous.
g.h.m. // a song for the girl who walks with demons
she is reckless, not just for you, but yes, yes, for you - this is her choice, always. (no matter what world you find her in, this is always true - the devil comes calling and she answers.) she is selfless, not inherently, never inherently, but because she chose to be, because she stills chooses to be. (you will walk into hell for her, and she will fight her demons for you, but, more importantly, you do it for yourselves.) she is kind, not because she is naive, but because she isn't - she has seen the darkness at its most pure and she refused to let it take root. (there are monsters in your backyard and you have tired of asking her not to fight them - you both know she would die for you if she had to but you know better than to ask her to live for you.) she is cracked but she is not broken - they ripped her heart in two and she sewed it back together again. (she would die for the people she loves, but in most worlds you don't have to worry about the day she will - she is a fighter, a survivor, and she will always choose to live - but nobody lives forever, no matter how kind or selfless or brave.) and she IS brave, but not for the demons she's killed, not because she saved your life, but because, once upon a time, she looked death in the eye and she chose to live instead.

love yourself like you love him - love yourself without restraint, with fondness and wandering smiles and with a kind of gentle, knowing certainty - remember the shade of your eyes in the morning light from the bathroom window and the way your hair curls after it rains. when you are sad, dry your tears and drive to the store to get ice cream and watch movies on your couch all night long. love yourself without doubt, with steady hands and warm heart and with a kind of gentle, loving care - love yourself like you are falling in love all over again.
