Danila Tkachenko - Restricted Areas
For this first group session, we were asked to bring in an image which was part of a series which had quality's which we would like to research more or potential incorporate it into my work.
When discussing this image I justified my choice to bring in this image as this particular shot from the series ties all of the elements of this photo series into one pleasing and digestible image. This is because this being a minimalist style shot of a crashed prototype bomber built by the USSR which in the current day has been left to the harsh Russian wilderness. This rusting plane wreck instantly brings the viewer to consider its former self as at one time this plane was a glimpse into the technological utopia which was promised by the Soviet rule. This was something the people could admire as evidence that their current sacrifice was not unjust and that a better future was within grasp.
However, this was clearly not meant to be as after all this plane crashed much like the Soviet communist party causing the end of the USSR and the financial crash of Russia. Leaving the people much like this plane to there own devices to survive and stand strong. However, there is an undeniable sense of abandonment and isolation which is in complete contrast to the utopia promised.
