“Your unlucky day, Deputy Devereaux!”
Unlike pretty much everybody else at the SBSD, Ephram had still not tired of this ‘joke’ he made whenever he was beginning a day’s work with whatever Deputy he was paired with for that shift. Everybody ignored him, which did nothing to dent his enthusiasm as he filled his travel mug and ate an oatmeal-raisin cookie in two wolfing bites, grabbing another two for the road as he met Ruby at the door to the station.
Freddie told him so often enough, and his own love for the job made it doubly true: Ephram was meant to be a small town sheriff. He threw himself not only into the work itself, but the philosophy around it, the persona to match, all of it, especially in the town he loved so dearly. And he took in some deep, glad breaths of the bracing winter air as they walked out to the jeep together, Ruby holding the list of incident reports they were to look into and follow up on.
“There’s that snatch-and-grab thing what’s been going on for the past week, right? At the top of the roster?” Ephram sipped his coffee and slid behind the wheel. “Mighty bold of the robber to go bare-faced in daylight, I tell you that much. Any fairies or whatnot able to say if it’s a glamour, and that’s why the robber don’t bother with concealing their identity?” Dispatch would be sending them some surveillance footage of the perp soon enough, but Ruby and Ephram had decided to start their shift running intstead of lingering at the station for it.
