Beer of the Week 225 - 1/3/2018: Cedar Creek Dankosaurus IPA
Another new year, another new beer from another new-to-me brewery thanks to Tavour. Cedar Creek Brewery has been in operation since 2012 and is located in Seven Points, Texas, founded by homebrewers who grew tired of the lack of a craft beer scene outside of Dallas. Dankosaurus is based on a classic West Coast Style IPA with bold pine, citrus, peach, and tangerine hop flavors, along with a clean bitterness are balanced by a velvety malt backbone.
Dankosaurus pours a hazy, golden-orange color with hues of yellow and tangerine when held to the light. A large, bubbly head forms about 2.5 fingers thick and retains quite well with solid, resiny lacing prominently displayed. The aroma lives up to its name, with strong dank hop notes hitting the nose first. This is followed by citrus aromas like tangerine, peach, some slight orange, and lemon zest. Like any dank hop beers, there is a strong hit of cannabis that surrounds the entire aroma.
The taste is much less like this beer’s namesake. The flavor starts with fruity hops giving flavors of orange, tangerine, peach, and lemon followed by a resiny, pine hop element. The dankness seems to be much less present in the flavor profile than in the aroma. This might be because there is a much stronger malt presence here than in the aroma, with flavors of graham cracker, and bready malts. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation - expected for an IPA that sits at 6.8% ABV.
Overall, this was good, but far from great. If you like dank IPAs, then this would be worth checking out if available near you. If you don’t like dank IPAs, then I would skip this one entirely. That said, there are PLENTY of better quality West Coast style IPAs out there. If you’re curious, go for this one, but I wouldn’t go out of y way to track it down.
Cheers and Happy New Year!
