DP Ramble: Dan/Dark Danny

Sometimes, it’s just weird to see Dan aka Dark Danny appear in fics sometimes. Not all the time, but sometimes it just strikes me as odd. I’m not saying I don’t like seeing him, I do depending how he’s handled. It’s just how I’ve seen fics just include him as part of the family. They’ll have a throwaway line about him being reformed or redeemed and that’s as much of a justification for him being there as it gets. 

It strikes me as odd because that is a major character change that is getting handwaved. Like, it’s implied there’s character development and growth, but it doesn’t want to include any of it, it just wants to tell you it happened and it feels like a misstep to me because there is sooooo much story to be had there. There’s all sorts of interesting character dynamics and conflicts surrounding that, because Dan is a villain and did terrible things both to the world and Danny, and even if it never happened in this timeline, does that really mean what he did doesn’t matter?

And I get that not everyone wants to tell a story about how Dan got “redeemed” in order to tell their story that includes him, but it always feels like there should be a bit more to it than that. I think if you’re going to write something like that, you as the author should have an idea HOW him being included happened even if you don’t write it because that’s something that can and should really affect how the characters interact

Whether or not Dan can or should be reformed/redeemed is an entirely different conversation, but it’s one of those things that is major enough it feels like it should have some impact. 

What do y’all think? Maybe this is something I’m noticing more in crossovers, maybe I just think it’s happening more than it really is

Danny Phantom Ramble: Need some advise on trans!Danny for my Phantom//Spectrum stuff. The way I'm currently integrating it is that at the start when he is 14 he's on puberty blockers and binds. Started socializing as a boy at 8 years old. Mainly its the plausibility of Danny's parents being accepting of refering to Danny as a son. Speaking of which how I plan on portraying them is they are loving (and a little goofy) but at their worst inattentive/consumed with work. I just don't see them having a big coniption fit over their kids gender identities or sexual orientation. Mabey they could be ignorant about somethings, just don't see them going out of their way to disrespect their kids. Also I'm not into the "disection/vivisection" stuff. Mainly because i know that IRL any competent researcher knows that you can't get ALL the info about how a speciman works from disection and you risk losing particularly rare specimans this way as you don't know if you will come across somthing like it again.

Phantom//Spectrum Ramble, (thus time with a sketch). First time drawing Danny's paternal ancestors, John and Lailah Fentonightingale. The earliest instance in the Fenton liniage of supernaturalists. Former residence of Salem Massachusetts, flead either before or in the middle of the Witch Trials and wound up living a quasi-nomadic lifestyle. Why? Well let's just say that John contested that "The Hammer of Witches" (the #1 book on identifying predanatural entities at the time) was full of bunk. As for Lailah make of it what you will with her knowledge of herbs, herbal codes, and her contribution of their records "the world unseen". (This can be interpided on weather John knows about his wife being a witch, does not recognize her as a witch, or is that oblivious) So yeah the inspiration for the portal comes from exerps from The Fenton Archives. (That Jack and Maddie try to perfect with science.)

Another Phantom//Spectrum (a Danny Phantom fanwork) Ramble: So I got an Idea about giving the Fenton Couple (though more specifically Maddie) a rival in the Supernaturalist/ Paranormal Investigator community. While the episode "Milloion Dollar Ghost" gave us parodies of the Extreme Ghost Busters (Extream Ghost Breakers), Scooby Doo (Scardy Cat & The Groovy Gang) and the Men in Black (Guys in White). They're competitors yes but I don't see any true rivalry. What I have in mind is a "No Celebrities were Harmed" parody of Ed and Lorainne Warren (you know Amityville Horror, the Conjuring, Annabelle). In one corner you got Jack & Maddie Fenton, ghost hunters who favor a scientific methodology but who's public perceptions/reputation is "The Local Kooks" to Destructive Experts. In the other corner you got Christian & Marrie-Ann Burrows, paranormal investigators that favor "spiritual" approach. They sell books about the cases they took on and run a museum of (supposedly) haunted/cursed objects. Thanks to their books they land deals for movies and TV shows, thus have maintained a positive reputation in and outside the paranormal Investigator community. However regaurding Maddie Fenton while she can't prove or disprove Marrie-Ann's psychic inclinations, she has reason to suspect that the Burrows have been "inflating their credentials".
