"Yeah...yeah, okay." He smiled sheepishly before taking your outstretched hand and stepping inside.

Steve pulled the chair out at the desk in the dimly lit room. Sitting down in front of the laptop he adjusted the IV drip that was following him around. He swallowed down the knot in his throat and wiped a hand across his face before pulling up the secure video line and pressing call.

The dialing noise sent him back into the moments the day before…

“This isn’t going to be pleasant…” Steve watched Tibbs pour gun powder into his sister’s wound and flicking open a lighter setting it ablaze making Y/N scream and pass out, “That stopped the bleeding but…she’s lost too much…and we don’t have any on reserve.”

“What about from direct tap?” Tree looked at him, “I’ll do it.”

“You’re not a match…” Tibbs put a bandage over the wound.

“Use me…” Everyone looked at Steve, “Use me, we match…”

“You’re…100% sure.” Tibbs was already pulling stuff out as Steve confirmed, “Fine…we do this…but you feel anything, you let me know and we’ll go a different route. Do you understand?”

“Yes.” Steve nodded holding out his arm.

“Do you?” Tibbs locked eyes with him, “Cause I don’t need two-”

“I understand…just save my sister…” Steve swallowed down the knot in his throat, “Please just save my sister…”

“Steve that you?” He snapped back staring at Danny’s face. The 5-0 office as his backdrop, “Man you look like shit? You coming home soon? Catherine said you’d be on a plane by now”

Steve didn’t answer him and looked down to his lap as he swallowed, “Danny…something happened…”

“I can’t tell if the bleeding it stopped…” Tibbs felt around her stomach, “How far out are we?”

“Twenty minutes…Flights have been redirected and I have the ground getting everything you need for surgery.” Tree told him.

“Good, she’s going to need it…” Tibbs muttered.

“Sh-she’s that bad?” Steve asked holding onto her hand.

“I can’t tell without an ultrasound and -fuck! Shit! LEO!” Tibbs shouted as he caught Steve from collapsing down onto you, “Goddammit…these McGarretts…”

“…are you okay?” When Steve didn’t answer him, he watched Danny’s hand move to his chest, “…where’s Y/N?”

“She’s…” Steve sighed moved out the way showing you in a bed hooked up to a ventilator and other wires. You were surrounded by the entire unit minus Cabbie, all passed out leaning against each other, the bed, chairs, anything with some sort of cushion, “she was shot. It was bad…”

“Is-is she gonna be okay? Where are you? I’ll be right there.” Danny continued to spout off.

“Danny, Danny!” Steve called for him to calm down, “She can’t move for a couple of weeks and I can’t tell you where we are…but we are coming home.”

Danny didn’t say anything for a long time until he sighed hanging his head, “Are you okay?”

“I’ll be fine…gave her some blood… Too much. Passed out before we landed.” Steve sniffed, “Just groggy and drained.”

“You idiot…” Steve smiled when Danny looked at him, “Do you know how furious she would be if you did something stupid enough to seriously hurt yourself? Especially if it was to help her!”

“Keep your voice down…” Steve hissed at him, “Or I’ll mute you!”

“Yeah, yeah…” Danny rolled his eyes before looking back at Steve, “Tell me she’s going to be alright…”

“She’s going to be fine.” Steve sighed, “She just needs to rest up for a bit. With her cancer and the chemo…is changes how things work. You know that.”

“Yeah, I know…” Danny frowned, “What do you want me to tell your mom?”

“Nothing.” Steve sighed looking away.

“Steve, she has been hounding me…”

“I will call her myself.” Steve told him, “How’s the team?”

The rest of the call was catching Steve up to what was happening on the island. Some shit different day, really. He was looking forward to getting back to it.

So, when he was greeted to the salt air and warm humidity he smiled. He looked at you rolling down the ramp next to him groggy from the drugs, “We made it home.”

“This…good…” You nodded smacking you lips together, “Christmas is fast…”

Steve looked at Tibbs who was escorting them to hospital to do a proper hand off, “How much did you give her?”

“I didn’t want her to mess up her chances of getting the treatment she needs.” Tibbs said quietly, “If the doctors here find out she was overseas…they’ll push her treatments back. They don’t need to, she’s clean but you know how it works…”

“Right…Los Vegas trip gone bad…” Steve reminded himself. It was a twin’s trip to just get away, and a mugging went wrong.

Steve’s smile grew when he saw Danny running toward them. His Camaro was parked next to the ambulance. He ran right to your side taking your hand, “Y/N…”

“Babe!” You said loudly through the haze, “Why are you here…Santa said no…”

“Jesus…” Danny looked to Steve for a reason why you were so out of it.

“I will explain on the ride over to the hospital.” Steve told him as the loaded her up, “Everything.”

“Right…” Danny stood there watching them strap you into the rig, “She’s…okay though, right?”

“Yeah…just really drugged up…” Steve smiled slapping a hand on his shoulder, “Come on let’s follow behind.”

“I love him…” Tibbs paused looking down to you as the ambulance took off, “I really love him…”

“Isn’t he a little short?” Tibbs smirked as the face you made.

“He’s-he’s compact…and sweet…like those…candies…” You held up your hand indicating with your fingers ‘small’.

“Miniatures?” Tibbs laughed as you nodded, “Alright…I suppose…if he makes you happy then we all approve.”

“He does.” You smiled at him, “Very happy…”

Danny glanced at Steve after he explained everything. He looked back at the ambulance, “…and this asshole didn’t give any reason why he changed sides?”

“He didn’t say much except that he was owning everything…He didn’t deny that he was a spy. He didn’t deny that he sold information…he didn’t deny trying to kill everyone as one point…” Steve sighed shaking his head, “Everything Catherine sent over he confirmed…nothing was good…”

“Well that’s just fantastic…” Danny hit the steering wheel with his hand.

“Danny…just keep calm…” Steve looked at him.

“Keep calm!?” Danny’s voice raised, “That lunatic almost killed Y/N, which in turned almost killed you! What would I do if-if I lost…”

Steve watched his friend get hysterical staring at the ambulance, “Danny…we’re okay.”

“Yeah, but…” He frowned running a hand through his blonde hair. His were full of worry as he looked at Steve, “I don’t think I could do any of this without the two of you.”

Steve smiled a little, “I love you too man…”

“…I mean it…” Danny stared at him as he parked, “Losing you…losing Y/N…I’m not sure I could be the same person I am right now.”

“Danny…you’re not going to lose us.” Steve told him confidently. He reached over patting his arm, “We’re home now, and we don’t plan on going anywhere.”

Your eyes opened slowly taking in the dim light of the hospital room. You swallowed trying to wet your mouth. The last thing you remember was Danny and Steve hovering over you before you went into surgery.

Looking to your right you saw Steve asleep in a chair. You smiled a little seeing how badly he was going to have a crick in his neck later. Chuckling you turned the other way seeing Danny asleep, but Grace sitting in his lap staring at you, “Grace?”

“You’re okay?” She asked quietly.

You smiled sadly, “Yeah…yeah, I’m okay. What are you doing here? Di-did you dad make you stay here all weekend?”

Grace smiled getting off her dad before crawling up to your bed. You looked surprised as she carefully snuggled into you, “I wanted to stay.”

“Oh…okay…well we’ll make a better weekend next time.” You adjusted your arm around her feeling your chest tighten at her next question.

“Y/N, are you still sick?”

You looked down at her frowning. You and Danny had never really agreed what to tell Grace. She knew you were sick, but that was it. You nodded slowly, “Yeah…I am.”

She frowned breaking your heart, “Will you ever get better? Daddy and Uncle Steve say it’s uh…uh shot…”

“I don’t know, but there is a shot.” You told her, “But Grace, I want to be honest with you…we don’t know. There is no…100 percent.”

“Can I help you?” Grace perked up making you smile. That’s when you noticed Danny’s eyes open and watching you both.

“You already are.” You gave her a squeeze, “Being here. Giving me hugs. Seeing your smile, what else could I ask for?”

You looked back to Danny seeing him sniff as he was getting teary eyed. He swallowed before reaching over, “Hey Monkey, get back over here. Y/N needs rest and she might rip her stiches with you crawling all over her.”

“She is fine and warm, and I wouldn’t dare have her move.” You squeezed Grace tighter getting her to laugh. You smiled at Danny reaching over toward him. He took your hand squeezing it tightly. The look in his eyes told you that he’d been in this through the long hall…but the little girl in your arms gave you pause.

Great pause…

Danny sat at his desk absently typing up an old report. His head wasn’t focused on it, hell his head wasn’t even in this office…

No it was back at the conversation he’d had a week prior with you over a video call. You’d managed to get an email to him that read: Get to a computer, video call me at this link. Everything is okay, I promise.

Needless to say it was not really okay.

“Babe?” He stared at your face through the screen reaching out touching the bruises on your face, “Wh-where are you? What happened?”

You smiled at him, “Danny…I can’t say much…”

“Is this your brother? He’s done somethin’ again hasn’t he? Taken you with him to go after Wo Fat or somethin’…” He rattled off quickly worry filling his chest.

“No, Danny, it wasn’t Steve.” You shook your head shifting in your seating looking off screen, “Danny, I don’t have a whole lot of time.”

“Y/N, what’s going on?” Danny frowned watching your rub your face, “Babe, your scaring me a little…”

“I’m sorry…” You sighed looking at him, “I got pulled back in…it’s something important…and Steve is going to be here to help me finish it.”

“Okay, but…um…” He swallowed as he tried to remain calm, “What-uh…what about your treatment? You have an appointment this week, you’ll be back right?”

You looked away from again frowning only making his heart sink, “No…I won’t be at that one…”

“Well…ho-how long is this going to take?” He leaned forward as if would help him get closer to you somehow.

You looked back at the screen, “I’m hoping it will only take two weeks…if things go well…”

“And if they don’t?” Danny sat there in the silence that followed waiting, “Y/N…”

“I don’t know, Danny… I don’t know.” You wiped your cheek and sniffed. Damn this screen…it was only then he realized you had been crying, “I’m just trying not to become this person that I need to be…and I don’t…I don’t know if I can be strong enough for this.”

The rest of the conversation was both of you reassuring one another that everything was going to be okay. Something he was sure didn’t reassure either of you. He was worried sick. Even more now then he’d been when he thought you and Steve had been kidnapped.

Kidnappers he can deal with, terrorist…well that’s a little above his paygrade. Dealing with your mother was also out of his depth, but he managed to settle Doris down. Or at least he thought he did. Either way he half joked that if she found out where the twins were that he’d buy the tickets to bring them home.

He found himself staring out the window just silently hoping? Praying? Anything…that you’d give him another note or call to let him know you were okay. He didn’t like this absent feeling he felt, especially when he knew you were being put into a position that was dangerous and uncomfortable.

But he also knew that you were with Steve and that gave him some solace. The pair of you took care of each other. You’d traveled the world to save him once, you both had a ‘spidey sense’ about one another, and he knew that you’d both die for one another.

He sighed looking back to his report saving it before Kono walked in, “Danny we got a case.”

“Finally…” He whispered as he stood up following her out.

“Any new news?” She asked him as they walked to the main computer where Chin was.

“No.” He shook his head slowly, “They are off grid until they reach out.”

“Any news from Doris?” Chin crossed his arms.

Danny smiled a little, “No…no not yet, and to be honest I’m not sure she will actually tell me. Our relationships is…on thin ice.”

“Well you are dating her daughter.” Chin pointed out.

“Who could kill me with a spoon six different ways. What’s your point?” Danny told him with a huff, “No, I just don’t trust her…and she keeps lying to Y/N and Steve…I just don’t want her to hurt them anymore. Enough of this…what’s the case?”

“I told you to stay in the car!” Steve shouted into the radio as he landed on another roof in pursuit of their target.

“Quit your bitchin and head north!” He heard your voice chirp back in the ear piece. He pivoted quickly on the roof seeing Sharif leap off the next one. Glancing down to the street he saw you briefly before you ducked around a corner.

The exchange did not go as planned. Whalid had in fact gotten spooked, which then made Sharif get spooked. This of course led to a shoot out, which presented Steve with what was in front of him. Chasing a man across broken roof tops while you pursued on foot on the ground.

“I’m losing him!” Steve spoke into his wrist as he continued running forward.

“On it.” Steve watched as Sharif skidded to a halt as gunfire rang out into the city toward him. He turned his direction giving Steve the ability to catch up.

“He’s turned west, heading toward the bazaar.” Steve reported.

“Tree be ready with extraction.”

“Copy that, moving to position at the circle.”

“Copy that, Steve?”

“ETA two minutes.” Steve smirked a little. He wished all his ops ran this smooth. There was something about working with you the last week that made everything fall into place. Even when things went south you had already thought of the solution giving your team the advantage.

Steve wondered what life would have been like had you been part of his SEAL team. Certainly, things would have gone a lot smoother on several missions. His unit definitely wouldn’t have as many scars, or as many loses.

Steve raised his gun as Sharif skidded to a halt at the edge of a roof that led him nowhere, “Put your hands up!”

The man turned looking at him as Steve walked up slowly. The last second he bolted heading south trying for the other roof that wasn’t much closer.  As he reached the ledged he stopped short seeing you on the other roof holding a gun toward him.

“Down on the ground!” You shouted at him, Steve noticed the sweat pouring from your pale form. You’d pushed yourself too much.

He cursed to himself as Sharif got to his knees speaking profanities toward you in several different languages, “You alright?”

“I will be.” You didn’t take your eyes off of Sharif as he spat at you, “Keep spittin’ I’m already dead.”

“You will suffer before I die.” Sharif hissed at you as Steve hoisted him up to his feet.

You eyed him as you radioed in for the boys to come help. They showed up quickly cleaning up the area making like you were never here. Steve got into the SUV and looked at you feeling something in his gut, “Hey…”

You looked at him locking eyes, there it was. The same feeling he had, “Something isn’t right.”

He nodded slowly keeping his head on a swivel. He knew you were talking about the plan, but he was thinking about your health, “I know…that plan should have worked.”

Your voice became hushed as you leaned over to him, “Someone had to have gotten to Whalid...before the meeting…”

Steve nodded glancing around the SUV at the other’s. Tree was driving and Leo sat next to him directing as Steve nodded his head toward them, “Do you think…”

You frowned looking at the two in the front, “We’re good here…I trust them.”

“But…” Steve whispered glancing back at the other two SUVs.

You swallowed thinking for a moment, “Hey Leo…”

“Yeah boss?” He smiled back at you. Everyone either called you boss or Prince showing a clear bond of loyalty to you. Steve started to think on that as the thought occurred to him.

“Tablet please.” You reached forward taking it from him when he pulled it off the cradle.

“Something the matter?” Tree glanced back in the mirror.

“Just…following our guts.” Steve told him, “Hopefully it’s nothing.”

“In my experience with a McGarrett…if they got a gut feeling, it’s usually right.” Tree smirked a little, “You gonna let us in on the secret?”

“I think we were set up.” You told him as you started to swipe through a file. You put a hand to your forehead wincing as you stared at the screen.

Steve frowned before he reached into a pouch pulling out canteen, “Y/N…”

You looked up seeing the canteen sighing, “Steve…”

“Drink the goddamn water, Prince.” Steve smirked when Tree barked at you. You rolled your eyes taking the water taking a big drink.

“There, happy?” You gave it back to your brother as you went back to the tablet.

Everyone had been informed of your health status. Steve was surprised that the whole unit rallied behind the doctor in making sure you were comfortable and cared for. When you got sick during one of the briefings, despite you insisting everything was fine, they stopped and made sure you were actually okay.

“I will be happy when Tibbs checks you over on our ride outta here.” Tree told you smiling as he heard you scowl, “Now, now none of that. We just want our favorite guardian on the mend. Now what’s this being set up business?”

“I’m not sure…Steve, do you still have the SAT phone?” You watched as he nodded leaning forward to the same bag as before pulling out the phone. You took it dialing quickly putting it to your ear.

Steve made a face, “Who are you calling?”

You held up a finger silencing him as the line clicked on, “Catherine…I need a favor. I’m sending over a few files, I need them cross checked with…well everything. We think we’ve been had…”

Steve smiled a little as you wrapped up the conversation, “You called Catherine…”

You rolled your eyes, “Don’t think that this means I like her…I still don’t, but she is good at her job. You should never trust people in Intel. They’ll know too much.”

“ETA to exfil 20 minutes.” Tree glanced back at you again, “Is this the same Catherine you got into it with?”

“’Got into it with’?” Steve’s eyes widened.

“Thanks…Tree….” You sighed making a face, “There are somethings Steve that you’re never going to know…this is one of them.”

You felt cold as you sat bound to a chair. You could hear people close by but their voices we’re muffled and not being able to see was making your anxiety rise faster.

A door opened and instinctively you balled up your hands bracing yourself for whatever may come next. You winced as a blinding light hit your eyes when they removed the hood from your head, “Jesus…we said extract her not beat the shit out of her…”

Your eyes focused quickly when you recognized the voice, “Leo?”

“Hey buddy…” A dark man came into your view after he released your hands. He reached up touching your face causing you to wince, “You’re a mess…let’s get you to medical.”

He began to help you up and cringed putting a hand to your side, “Leo…what’s going on?”

He put your arm around his firm shoulders sighing, “Brass didn’t take your no seriously…but enough that they forced you back.”

You stopped looking around the hall. You pulled your arm away from him. You’d been knocked out on the way here and had no sense of what time it was or where you were, “Where are we?”

Leo frowned looking down, “Y/N, we all tried…”

“Where are we!?” You repeated as your voice rose.

“Chabahar.” You looked over to see Tree and the rest of the unit standing in the hall looking at you. They all looked ashamed.

You took a deep breath and looked away from them trying to remain in control. You had to now…you didn’t have a choice, you were working, “Where’s my brother?”

“Y/N…you should see-”

“Where is he?” You snapped at Leo making him take a small step back.

Tree stepped forward nodding for Leo to take off as he began helping you down the hall. You looked up at the ginger as he helped you walk, “Was this your idea?”

He looked down to you and then away, “If you wanna blame someone…sure…but it wasn’t our unit that extracted…”

“Kidnapped.” You corrected.

Tree let out a soft sigh before speaking again, “It wasn’t us…we refused, and brass moved without us…”

He opened the door letting you inside a holding room. Steve reacted about the same way you did, but was fortunate to hear your voice to the rescue, “Steve…”

He relaxed as you undid his hands and pulled the hood off. From the look on his face, you looked awful, “Y/N …”

“Steve…” You swallowed down your emotions looking him in the eyes, “brother I need you to be my second right now…more than that actually…I’m not…I need your help.”

He put his hands on your shoulders leaning his forehead against yours as he nodded. He could feel your anxiety and tension. Worse he knew exactly what was going on with you, which is why you were taking the camping trip together.

He sighed as you spoke again, “They’re not going to let me go, but I don’t know if I can manage…”

“We will figure it out…First, we need to try and get you home. No matter what we have to try…” He whispered looking into your eyes, “Then we figure out the next step…remember, it’s all about steps.”

Your brother, your protector, the man you shared so much with strode over to Tree hands balled up and jaw set. You almost wanted to let it happen, and you could see Tree ready to take the assault Steve was about to rain on him, but something in your gut stirred, “Steven…”

He stopped almost immediately when you used his formal name. He swallowed down the knot in his throat letting his nose flare as he exhaled and spoke very clearly, “I need to speak to who is in charge.”

Tree nodded slowly, “Happy to retrieve him for you, but let’s have him meet you in medical. Prince looks like she needs some help.”

Steve looked back to you as you stepped forward holding your side, “Fine…we’re also going to need a SAT phone or computer. I’m sure our family is worried.”

Medical was about what you expected for a Spec Op joint, sparse. You checked out, just lots of bruising, more than likely as a result of radiation and chemo mixing with being handled in a rough manner. Steve was worse off then you with a busted lip and bruised ribs.

However, he was more concerned with your care. Letting the doctor know everything. Your cancer, your condition, your meds.

You let out a sigh as the doctor looked over at you nodding to Steve, “I can get everything if…if things don’t end up fairing your way…”

“Whoever’s in charge has got to understand that, Y/N is sick. She can’t operate in the field. You should have some input into that right?” Steve stood up putting his shirt back over his bandaged chest.

“I can put in some input yes…but I don’t get the final say. I will stress it though.” Steve seemed satisfied as he stepped over to you.

“Steve…” You looked at him apologetically, “I…”

When you didn’t go on he sighed, “Not exactly the weekend I had planned…and you know when I said I had a craving for field rations this is not what I meant.”

You let out a laugh as he took your hand. He always knew what to say to bring you back. Always had since as long as you could remember.

“Something funny?” You both looked over to a gruff looking man. Older then the both of you, but not quite retirement age.

“Yeah…your idea of asking people for help.” Steve practically placed himself between you and the Lieutenant Colonel, “You’ve not only kidnapped the both of us, but have put my sister’s health at great risk.”

“Mr. McGarrett…” The man began placing his hands behind his back as he took a step forward.

“Commander.” Steve corrected him, you both saw the irritating look he flashed them. Essentially, your brother and this man were the same rank just different branches.

He cleared his throat correcting himself and spoke slowly, “Commander McGarrett…I’m sure you know that your sister is involved in some sensitive missions.”

Steve glanced back at you taking in a deep breath, “Y/N, only ever mentioned that she was involved in high level extractions and worked with a Delta unit to proceed with these missions.”

“Well one mission forced her into the field. We need her back in order to capture Sharif Nadim.” Steve watched your posture change at the mention of this man. The Colonel looked to letting his arms drop, “You see why it’s imperative that you’re here?”

“I don’t…” You looked over to Tree then to Steve, “I can’t promise anything, sir. I am very sick…and… if I do this I need Steve to be my guardian.”

“Wait…” Tree stepped forward protesting.

“Done.” The Lieutenant Colonel nodded quickly before looking to Tree, “Get them up to speed…and read Commander McGarrett in.”

“I also require a secure line…” You glanced at Steve again, “We have people who are no doubt worried and looking for us.”

“I’ll have one set up and waiting for you once you are fully informed of the mission.” He nodded slowly.

He left them in the room alone with Tree. You stood up, “Andy…it isn’t personal. Steve and I have a bond…he will know if I’m compromised before I do.”

“I’m not upset about that.” Tree shook his head frowning, “I just remember this guy being super skittish…anything out of the norm and he bolts.”

“I remember.” You nodded slowly, “But he’s the only way to Nadim.”

“Wait…” Steve looked between the two of you, “we’re not dealing directly with Nadim?”

“It’s a … complicated situation. We’re meeting with a man named Whalid…he fancies beautiful, strong, fair complexion women.” Tree crossed his arms, “Sketchy little dude…but knowledgeable.”

Tree explained everything while the doctor finished up his tests and devised a treatment plan. It was fairly simple and to the point. Steve would pose as your brother who was taking over for the unfortunate ‘death’ of Tree your former bodyguard.

“What happened to the tall red haired man?” Steve stood near your chair watching you swirl warm bourbon around in a glass. You paused as Whalid stood waiting for an answer, “You say he no longer works with you, I find it hard to believe you would just let him leave…”

A cruel smirk appeared on your face that made Steve’s stomach drop for a moment. You played your part well. The dossier on your persona was a cruel arms dealer who wouldn’t hesitate to sell to even the darkest scum of the earth, if the price was right, “There was an unfortunate incident and he’s no longer with the living.”

“I’m sorry to hear that, I found him funny.” Whalid relaxed a little finally stepping over to you and taking a seat pouring himself a drink.

“Don’t be…people who steal from me get dealt with. Usually a bullet to the head is enough, but dear McCoy set an example for several others who doubted me.” You smiled at him before reaching back taking Steve’s hand in yours, “I’m in better company now anyways…you remember me telling you about my brother?”

“This is him?” Whalid smirked looking at Steve, “You two looking nothing alike.”

“I take after my mother.” Steve spoke for the first time since Whalid entered the lavished hotel room, “Sis, takes after dad.”

Whalid laughed pointing up at him, “This is funny! You are a funny man, sir.”

“Charlie.” You looked up at Steve holding up the glass, “Could you get me some ice please?”

Steve took the cup between his fingers moving away as Whalid relaxed further leaning toward you, “Echo…it’s been a long time…what can I do for you?”

Danny walked through the McGarrett house a few days later with a little spring in his step. He’d earned his title the last few days. Not Five-0, but detective.

He took a deep breath when he saw you reading a book in the hammock in the backyard. He’d screwed up the other night by moving too fast. You had shot him down quickly, well logically at least, but as he said he wasn’t one to give up.

He smiled as he walked out the screen door slamming against the house getting your attention. You smiled and waved at him before you closed your book and adjusted your silly bucket hat on your head, “Hey!”

“Hey yourself.” He smirked as he pointed to the hat, “Is it a McGarrett thing to wear dumb hats.”

He laughed as your mouth dropped opened offended, “I will have you know that this is a sensible fishing hat that clearly protects you from the sun.”

“And makes you look like an overgrown toddler.” He poked at you again, “You and your brother should take a picture together it’d be both adorable and equally embarrassing.”

You rolled your eyes in true McGarrett fashion as you swung your legs off the hammock meeting solid ground, “I hope you didn’t come over here to just insult my head wear.”

“As a matter of fact, I did not.” He swayed in excitement getting a curious head tilt from you, “How are you feeling today?”

Your eyes narrowed on him as he smiled at you, “I’m doing alright…Danny?”

“Yes?” He licked his lips as he put his hands in his pockets.

“I get the feeling that you are wanting to tell me something…” You stood up crossing your arms over your chest as you cocked your hip in his favorite way.

“Not tell you…more like show you.” He smirked as he held his hand out to you.

Your face contorted into confusion, “Danny…”

“Trust me.” His eyes lit up playfully making it hard to refuse him. His grin got bigger when you took his hand and began leading you back to the house.

“Is it a dog?” You asked as you got closer.

He glanced back at you, “What?”

“What you want to show me…is it a dog? I always wanted a dog.” You smirked seeing him sigh, “Big one, golden retriever like.”

“Sorry to disappoint, there is no dog.” He led you right through the house and out the front toward his car.

“Oh…we’re leaving?” You slowed down a little and pointed to your shorts and t-shirt, “Danny, I’m not really dressed to go anywhere.”

“You look perfect.” He smiled opening the door for you. You hesitated which made him nervous, but finally relented sliding into the car.

He shut the door and slid across the hood of the silver Camaro making you giggle, something else he could add to the list of things he liked about you. Simple sound, but so delicious to the ears.

He glanced at you as he backed out, “Just…you know, let me know if you start to feel tired or anything. I want this to be special.”

“Special?” He saw the worry and excuses working their way up.

“Relax, I promise this is simply something to make you feel happy.” He tried to sound reassuring, but his excitement dampened it only making the confused look on your face more permanent. Or was it anxiety?

The drive wasn’t terribly long as he pulled into a parking lot towards the back of a few hotels on the main drag. He got out running around to your side helping you out.

You gave him a strange look, “Danny, I’m not broken…”

“No, I know…I can just feel my mother across the ocean in New Jersey slapping the back of my head telling me to be a gentleman.” He smiled offering his arm out to you, which you took without any resistance.

He notices your smile when he put his free hand over yours on his arm. This wasn’t a date, but he did want you to know what he was capable of. His hope was that taking you here would open the door for opportunity. Or at least a window.

“Where are we, Mr. Williams?” Shivers went down his spine when you addressed him that way. It was sensual and flirty, he planned to play along.

“Ms. McGarrett, I made it my personal goal to find this place for you.” He stopped outside the door smiling, “It wasn’t easy, and it took a lot of digging, which lead me nowhere, until good ol' Chin Ho Kelly gave me the answer.”

“The answer to…?” You made a face. He didn’t answer you, but only nodded for you to open the door. You sighed and reluctantly began to open the door, “You know…I’m not overly fond of surpr-”

You fell silent as the low drawl of a saxophone filled the void. You glanced back at the still smiling Danny before you moved down the stairs in to the club.

It was like a cozy hideaway. Speakeasy-esque in its decorations and dimly lit, scent of cigar smoke and bourbon in the air. Your father would have loved it.

You turned to Danny tears beginning to prick the corners of your eyes, “Danny…I don’t know what to say…”

“Don’t say anything.” He told you as he guided you across the busy room of older coupled and guests to a table on the side of the stage where a band played, “Just enjoy it.”

As you took a seat an older gentleman approached wearing an apron. His smile was gentle as he spoke, “Detective Williams, good to see you back.”

Danny shook his hand firmly, “Good to be here, Arthur. Thank you for holding the table tonight on short notice.”

“It was a good reason.” Arthur smiled looking at you, “Your father was a good man, and an excellent patron.”

“You knew him?” You stared up at him a spark lighting up in your eyes.

“He came here every Friday night since we opened. Sat here, listened to the band, ordered two drinks. One for himself, and one for his daughter who enjoyed the music as much as him.” Arthur told you crossing his arms in front of himself, “Always said one day he’d get you here for a dance. When we heard what happened…well…everyone is deeply sorry for your loss.”

You thanked him quietly before he took your order walking off. Danny watched you turn to the band occasionally wiping a year away. Finally, he couldn’t contain himself, “You alright?”

You looked at him a bittersweet expression coming to your eyes, “Yeah…I think so. I can just…I don’t know…feel him here. Is that weird?”

“No.” Danny crossed his leg catching his knee with both his hands, “Not at all. Seems like you two were really close.”

“We were.” You nodded a little, “It was always me and Dad and Mom and Steve, and Mary just fit everywhere.”

When you laughed he felt his stomach flip excitedly. It was such a great noise. Soft and airy making your eyes crinkle and your mouth turn into a smile that lit your entire face up, “You just thought of something nice…”

“Yeah, I did.” You smiled at him turning a little in your seat to look at him, “When I was about seven, Steve and I, we were inseparable. Mary had just became a thought when they found out her gender and everyone was excited except for us. We liked our little unit and didn’t want it to change.”

“So…not knowing how babies worked we simply wrote a letter to Santa for answers asking him to ‘Please return this new baby, and we will be good and skip Christmas.’” He chuckled a little as you retold the tale, “But then we got a reply! That was the best part. Green paper, glitter, the works.”

“What did it say?” Danny leaned forward a little hanging on every word.

“Dear Steve and Y/N, I know change can be hard, but believe me this will be a new adventure. I have a special message just for you from your baby sister: Big brother and sissy, I am excited to meet you and learn from you. Santa has already told me of your great adventures, especially the recent one where you found the star fish. He said it was beautiful and I hope one day you can show me a star fish too.” You shrugged a little, “Love your baby sister, your biggest fan, Mary McGarrett.”

“Did it work?” He asked you quietly, “Did you accept it or…”

“Oh I was pissed!” You told him reaching for your drink, “Santa didn’t know me, and no letter was going to make me want this kid in my life. Nah, I didn’t like Mary until my dad put her in my arms for the first time…then she became my Mary. I loved her and protected her. Steve was the same way. Crazy McGarrett Trio.”

“What made you think of all this?” He asked as you took another sip of your drink.

Your eyebrows went up as you glanced to the band, “Uh…Dad and I were dancing…when the letter came through the mail slot. Song sounds similar.”

“Hm…” He smiled a little looking at the band before he took a deep breath and stood up. He held his hand out to you, “Well we shouldn’t waste it then.”

You stared at his hand as you started shaking your head, “Danny, no one else is dancing…”

“They’re old…they want to sit…” He smirked reaching down taking your hand in his pulling you up out of your seat and stepped toward the front of the stage.

He watched as your face flushed when his hand met your hip, the other holding you hand out as he began to sway with you, “Danny…”

“Hey…” You looked into his eyes, “This one is for your dad.”

You smiled a little before licking your lips, “Okay…you’re right…”

“I know I am. You should tell your brother. Maybe he’ll actually listen to me from time to time.” He looked away a little as he adjusted his hand in yours letting a couple of his finger interlace with your comfortably.

“Have you heard from him?” He looked back to you seeing the concern on your face.

He shook his head frowning a little, “No…I left a few messages though giving him a piece of my mind…stupid son of a…”

You smiled as he trailed off falling silent, “I appreciate you trying.”

“Of course,” He looked into your eyes finding it so easy to get lost in them, “I’ll keep trying until I get through to him.”

He didn’t take his eyes off yours as he felt your hand relax on his shoulder as you both moved a little closer together and small intimate place being created just for the both of you as the music transitioned seamlessly to the next song. He stayed quiet just moving with you each gentle trill of the saxophone and piano drawing you both closer and closer.

“You are so beautiful…” His face got red instantly as his mouth hung open, “I-I didn’t…uh…wow…sorry, just thinking out loud I guess…”

You let out a soft giggle a small distance coming between the two of you for a moment, breaking the that space you’d found each other in, “Are you trying to seduce me, Danny Williams?”

He swallowed a little, “I don’t know…is it working?”

You flushed a little letting him that it very well might be, “Danny…”

“I know…believe me I know all the reasons to say no…” He got your attention again as he continued to sway with you, “Your brother, my daughter, our friendship…cancer…”

You looked away at the last one feeling your nose tickle as he went on, “But I don’t care…It is so easy to be around you. Everything is effortless.”

“But it won’t be forever.” You looked at him your face getting hard, “Danny, I’m not getting much better…”

“You have to give-”

“It time, I know…” You looked away shaking your head, “I want to so badly, Danny…I wanna say yes…but I don’t want to drag you down. Not when everything is so uncertain.”

“But I want it.” He whispered to you, “I want all of it…I want the uncertainty of it all…I want to take care of you. It’s been hell of year and knowing you has made it easier. I want...I want to spend a life with you.”

“Even if it’s short?” You looked at him seeing him pause stopping on the dance floor still holding you.

“Especially if it’s short…” He told you with sincere and honest conviction. You didn’t have an answer to that as he started moving again letting the music once again guide you both closer together.

Finally, you rested your head against his shoulder sighing, “I…I need a little more time to think…”

“Take all the time you need.” He rested his cheek against your forehead, “I’m not going anywhere.”

His words made you want to cry. You’d had a lot of relationships throughout your life, but there was an old soul about Daniel Williams that made him stand apart from all of them. You liked it a lot.

You smiled a little as you spoke, “Only thing that would make this night better is a good pair of heels and a swishy dress.”

“A swishy dress? Is-is that actually a thing?” He chuckled a little as you nodded.

“You know it when you see it.” You told him quietly.

“Would a ‘swishy’ dress be enough to convince you to have a night out with me?” He half joked.

“Oh yeah totally.” You laughed a little, “Every girl wants a night out in a swishy dress and a man dressed to the nines.”

“Noted.” He smiled pulling away to look at your face. It was certainly a step in the right direction. Definitely a cracked window opened.

“Thank you, Danny, I appreciate the fact that you did not complain once all the way from the elevator to the office door.” Steve rolled his eyes opening the door for his short partner.

“You’re so welcome babe.” Danny smirked stepping inside stopping as he saw someone moving around Steve’s office, “Uh, you expecting someone?”

Steve stepped in looking at his office tensing at who he saw, “No.”

“Huh…” Danny watched as the figure turned looking at a photo of Steve and his father on the wall smiling, “Well, she’s cute at least.”

“…she’s my sister.” Steve’s face went blank as he began to walk forward fist balling up.

“Sister? Wait…wait…this is the sister…the one…the -” Danny followed him stopping as Steve turned sharply to look at him.

“Danny this is my twin.” Steve clenched his jaw seeing more questions. He didn’t talk about you much. You had a falling out about a year after your mother died and it just progressively got worse over the years, “I’m gonna need a minute with her ok?”

Danny didn’t get a chance to reply as he stepped away again heading straight into his office. You turned looking at him. From outside the window Danny could definitely see similarities. You had that same confident smirk, same cocky stance as your hands fell on your hips. Though you looked a tad more attractive when you did it, something about how you cocked your hip.

Steve’s mouth went instantly dry when you turned to him. There were so many things he wanted to say to you, but none of them would help him figure out why you were here. He flexed his clenched hands as you spoke first, “Hi…”

“Hey…” He licked his lips staring at you as you turned looking at the office letting your hands fall waving around to the office.

“Nice digs…” You told him as he interrupted.

“What are you doing here, Y/N?” His tone was harsh as was the look on his face.

“I… finally got off a deep assignment.” You looked down already knowing exactly what was coming, “I finally heard about dad.”

“His funeral was almost a year ago.” He stood his ground as you looked up at him matching his stance.

“Steve, I would have been here. You know that.” You frowned as you started to defend yourself, “There was no way for -”

“But you weren’t, Y/N!” Steve snapped loudly, “For crying out loud, Y/N! Mary…Mary made it back her before you. You both missed it, but at least she-”

“Stop!” You shook your head tearing up as you threw your hands up into the air surrendering, “This isn’t why I came here. I do not have to justify myself to you, when you know if it was reversed you’d say the same thing. I could throw so much back at you about how it’s your fault he’s dead, but I’m not here…I’m not here for that, Steve…”

You turned away from him putting your hands to the sides of your head trying to regain control over your emotions. After a few beats Steve swallowed down the truth in the air and asked, “So why are you here?”

You sighed looking at your other half eyes red and puffy from holding back tears, “You can’t feel it? Have we been apart that long?”

He could feel it. An unease, something wasn’t right. He’d been feeling it for a while, “What is it?”

“I’m sick Steve…” You sighed your shoulders slumping defeated.

His eyes widened as he took a step toward you. It didn’t matter how mad he was. You were his family, his sister…his other half, he would always be connected to you somehow, “Is it bad?”

He could see you trying not to cry as you leaned up against his desk, “Well it’s uh…the big C… so go big or go home right?”

His heart immediately sank as he stepped up to you taking your hand in his like you used to do when either of you would be scared, “Y/N…”

“…so I came home…” You squeezed his hand looking down trying to keep it together still, “I-I was hoping my brother would help me get through this…”

“Of course,…of course, Y/N.” You looked up at him seeing that hard exterior he’d been putting on cracking quickly, “This is your home, it always will be.”

A tear fell down your cheek as you nodded, “Thanks Steve…”

“Com’ere…” He pulled you into a tight hug and the familiar sensation of being whole filled him. He’d forgotten how much he really missed you.

“I really am sorry I couldn’t be here…” You started to speak as you hugged him tightly.

“I know…I was just mad…I’m an ass.” He smiled when he heard you let out a laugh as he pulled away, “S-so how bad…”

“Don’t…I just want to get settled and see doctors before I start laying it all out there…and I’d like you to be there  while I do it…” You glanced over his shoulder clamming up a little at what you saw through the door, “Who’s the handsome lurker?”

Steve glanced back at Danny staring at the pair and rolled his eyes, “Ignore him.”

“Kinda hard to, brother, he’s a little distracting.” You smirked staring at Danny. Maybe moving back home wouldn’t be so bad.

Steve looked back at Danny again who raised his hand as he grinned wiggling his fingers, “Fine…you’re going to meet him eventually anyways I’m sure, and he’s not going to let it go.”

“Got blood hound on your hands, do ya?” You wiped your face as he held the door open for you.

Steve let out a sigh, “Only when I don’t want him to be.”

“Ma’am, did this neanderthal say something insulting to you? I can have him arrested.” Danny smirked at you as you both walked over.

You let out a laugh smiling for what felt like the first time in months, “Uh, no officer, I can assure you that everything is just peachy keen between me and my little brother.”

“Oh no…” Steve shut his eyes shaking his head, “Why…why did you do that?”

“Little brother?” Danny felt his smirk grow further.

“Oh yeah, the universe felt they needed me in the world six minutes longer then good ol’ Steven here.” You smirked enjoying your brother cringe, “He hates it when I tell people that…he likes to be all tall and macho…”

“I am well aware of his need to be so much better then everyone else.” Danny smiled at you holding out his hand, “Danny Williams.”

“Y/N McGarrett.” You took his hand and he clasped his other over yours shaking it.

“It is a pleasure to meet you.” Danny stared into your eyes, “You look much nicer than your brother.”

“It’s because I am.” You glanced down at your hand still being held as you smirked, “Uh…you going somewhere with this long handshake?”

“Sorry…it’s just so rare to see kindness from a McGarrett…I thought it was a myth. That they were only robots who actively seek gun fire and highspeed car chases.” Danny slowly let go your hand as he looked over to Steve.

“Are you back on that again? Let it go.” Steve waved his arms out from him.

“I will not let it go, you are driving my car!” Danny shouted at him.

You chuckled later thinking back on the situation that followed. Steve glanced at you as he drove home. He could see the differences now that he knew what you were battling. You looked tired, worn down. He just hoped you didn’t give up, “What are you giggling about?”

You looked at him smirking a little, “Your partner and your marital spat with him.”

Steve shook his head, “Danny overreacts.”

“Uh huh, sure he does.” You smiled at him seeing him take in a deep breath concentrating on the road, “Steve…”

“I just want to know how bad it is.” Steve looked at you frowning, “I know it can’t be great…but…”

“It’s…pretty bad.” You sighed looking at the scenery as it flew past. You knew if you looked at him you’d just start crying again and you just weren’t ready for that part of this journey yet, “I-uh came into contact with some pretty radioactive materials on job and it…fucked me up pretty bad I guess. The docs I saw told me to take it easy and seek medical attention…forced into early retirement.”

“What were you doing?” He watched as you gave him a sideways look, “I know it was with JSOC…That last time we spoke…argued…”

“Yeah, you know it’s…past.” You told him putting smile on your face, “I was angry, you were angry…dad was…being dad and…well…I’m not sorry, but I can’t change even if I wanted to.”

“You know I just wanted you to be safe…I just wanted Mary to be looked after.” Steve turned onto their street.

“Yeah, but why was that my responsibility?” You pointed at him, “Why was it okay for dad to get you set up in the Army Navy Academy and I had to finish out high school in a town where I knew no one and the only person that I could talk to was training 3 fucking hours away.”

Steve pulled into the driveway and parked looking at you. There was a lot of anger you had for this place and the situation your mom’s death had put you in, “You know, you didn’t answer my question.”

“That’s because I can’t tell you.” You told him letting out a sigh, “You know how it works…We work with Delta…you can assume we were making an extraction.”

“But what were you doing in the field?” He made a face as he tried to work it out.

You rolled your eyes shaking your head, “It’s 2011, Steve. Women are allowed in the field now, under special orders when they have the right training. Plus we live in a world where we can’t really be fussy anymore. We got planes falling out of the sky, suicide bombers walking the streets, people coming into your homes…where you think you're safe…”

He followed your gaze toward the house, “Y/N…I…”

“How bad was it?” You looked to him as you cut him off, “I mean my SO…he kind of gave me the jist of everything. Said you caught the son of bitch…”

“I didn’t.” You froze as he spoke calmly looking into your eyes, “I didn’t catch him, Y/N…I thought I did, but things are a lot bigger then I thought.”

“What do you mean?” You turned to face him concern rippling over your features so much that even Steve began to feel it himself. Something he hadn’t experienced in years, “Steve…”

“I will get you caught up.” He reached over putting his hands on your arms, “I promise, but let’s get you settled…order some food…and then we can talk about this…and you and…everything.”

You relented getting the sense that you weren’t really getting an option. You sat in the truck a moment longer before getting out letting the humid air wash over you.

God, you really did miss all this. Steve came around the truck holding you bag giving you a smile as he walked past toward the house, “Welcome home, sis.”

Danny glanced over to the hospital room where he could hear you and Steve getting into it. He cleared his throat leaning back in the chair as a nurse walked by making a face, “Siblings…”

They made an understanding face and nodded stepping away as the door pulled open roughly letting it slam behind you. Danny stood up following you down the hallway quickly “Y/N…Y/N, wait…would you wait!”

You only stopped when he grabbed your elbow, “Danny…”

Your warning tone and tears made his heart jumped to his throat, “Y/N, what happened in there?”

You sniffed crossing your arms looking away from him, “Look…I just…he would’ve done the same thing…”

“Slow down…” Danny put his hands on your arms trying to make you feel better, “What happened?”

You looked to his face frowning, “He’s mad because I decided to come help him instead of taking care of myself.”

“Wh-I don’t understand…” Danny shook his head.

“I-I lied…about everything being okay…Going to Korea…it put my treatments on hold…and…” You frowned looking down, “I’m sorry…Just…I gotta go…”

Danny stood there letting his mouth fall open slightly as he watched you walk away. He turned walking toward Steve’s room opening the door looking at him hooked up to a monitor and IV bag, hand over his face obviously frustrated, “Hey buddy…”

Steve moved his hand looking at his partner, “Danny, hey…”

“That-uh sounded heated.” Danny watched Steve roll his eyes, “Steve…”

“Did you know?” Steve looked at him.

“Steve, you know I would have done everything in my power to keep her here if I did.” Danny stood next to him sighing, “And even then, she still would’ve been there to bring you home.”

“Six months…” Steve’s hand fell over his heart, “Danny…I’m not worth her getting worse.”

“Whoa…hey…” Danny frowned putting a hand on his friend’s shoulder, “Listen, she’s strong…and really scary. She’s gonna beat this. Cancer ain’t got nothin’ on her.”

Steve looked up to him as he continued to rub his chest, “I have heard that she is scary…how scary is scary?”

“Well just let me say…” Danny thought back to you in the chopper pulling up a face mask that had a skull painted on it. “I am glad she’s on our team.”

After visiting for a little bit more, Steve asked him to go home to check on you.  Something that made Danny’s stomach do flips. On the drive, he kept replaying bits of the rescue over and over in his mind.

He watched one of the Navy SEALs step over to you on the plane, “So, your McGarrett’s twin?”

You looked up from pushing things around in your pack, “Yeah…problem?”

“You’re just not what I expected, is all.” He smirked at you a little, “I expected a macho woman, not someone so fragile looking.”

Danny frowned at the jab and stood up to walk over pausing as he heard you speak, “Listen sea dog, I don’t doubt your abilities and you shouldn’t doubt mine. I might not have been on the field as much as you, being in JSOC…but I’ve extracted more then 30 high value targets successfully…and there is no one more valuable to me then my brother. So, I suggest you get your head out of your dick and on mission.”

Chuckles were heard all around the carrier as the man shifted on the balls of his feet, “I didn’t mean…”

“I know…but now that it’s clear…” You pulled your face shield over your head and down your face, showing the skull print and small crown engraved on the cheek, which caused a reaction from all the SEALs including Joe. You adjusted it around your neck, “I expect nothing but the best.”

“Ma’am, yes ma’am…” He nodded a little glancing over toward his buddies, “I didn’t realize we were in the presence of…”

Danny didn’t hear what he said as he whispered, but your how stern your face got made him worried that it wasn’t good. You cleared your throat, “I don’t go by that anymore…and I would appreciate it if you didn’t call me that. It’s a Delta thing.”

The way you moved on the field was similar to your brother, just not as bulky. You took down the enemy quickly staying in step with the SEAL team. Danny found himself thinking, how could someone make trekking through an enemy infested jungle look appealing?

Then the reunion between you and your brother.

“I got Steve!” Danny shouted throwing the tarp up over the truck. You ran up next to him jumping inside immediately when you saw your brother tied up in the back.

“Steve!” You put your hands on either side of his face looking into his eyes. It was the purest connection that Danny had ever seen. The love you had for your brother is something Danny understood, but the connection you had from being his twin was unfathomable.

“What are you doing here?” Steve whispered looking at you before you pulled him into a tight hug making him cry out in pain, “Y/N…”

“I’m taking you home stupid.” You told him as a couple tears slipped down your face.

Danny sighed walking inside the house seeing your head through the window to the back porch. He stepped outside, and you looked up at him. You were biting your thumb and as he opened his mouth to speak you blurted out, “I’m really sorry, Danny. I didn’t…I didn’t want to lie to you, but I knew you would try to stop-”

“It’s okay.” He interrupted you making you stare at him, “I get it. Even if you had told me I don’t think there was anything I could say to keep you here, aside from chaining you to a wall, which you no doubt could escape.”

“I never…I just feel so bad.” You told him frowning feeling a pain in your stomach, “You’ve been nothing but nice and kind and…wonderful, and I just lied to you.”

He took a seat in the chair next to yours, “It’s your brother…I would’ve done the same in your position…hell I pretty much have…”

“You have?” You looked over to him nodding as he began to explain about his brother Matt.

“I regret not stopping him from getting on the plane…” Danny looked at you eyes bright and filled with sadness, “it kills me that I don’t know where he is or what he’s doing.”

“…you know I still have some strings I could pull at JSOC…” You rested your chin on your palm looking at him, “If you ever want to find him…”

He smiled shaking his head, “Thanks, but Matty has got to make his own choices and live with them.”

“Well if you ever change your mind, the offers there.” You smiled before looking at the bandage on your upper arm.

“How is that?” He pointed at it. You’d gotten grazed while on their excursion and Steve seemed really worried about it.

“It’s fine really, I just gotta make sure it stays clean.” You looked at him small smile coming to your face, “The chemo treatments made me more susceptible to infections.”

“Ah, so that is what Steve was on about.” Danny crossed his leg over his other leaning back staring at you, “He’s really worried about you.”

“I was really worried about him!” You snapped back before sighing and looking away, “…it wasn’t working anyways…the six months might give me a different option…”

“Wait…the chemo wasn’t working?” Danny watched as you nodded staring out to the ocean, “But it’s been like-like a month…shouldn’t it take longer to see change?”

You grabbed your phone pulling up an email from your doctor. They had taken samples when you visited like they do every time you’re there, “Y/N, I hope your trip went well and your family is alright. I thought I should inform you that your levels have increased at an alarming rate. While we still won’t be able to explore anything for six months, it seems that your trip came at a practical time. I look forward to seeing you soon. Safe travels, Dr. Lenau.”

Danny frowned as you tossed the phone back on the table letting silence fall over the area. Finally, he spoke quietly, “…are you okay?”

You wouldn’t look at him as a tear fell down your cheek, “Not really…”

“Y/N…”

“Danny…” You looked at him finally giving him a smile, “I appreciate what you’re doing, I do, but I’m not good with all this emotional stuff when it revolves around me. I just need…to grieve for a bit.”

“Okay…” He nodded slowly, “do you want to be alone? Or…should I order some pizza and grab some beers?”

“Uh…” You let out a soft laugh as you wiped your face, “Let’s go with option two…cause I could eat the entire house right now…”

“Yeah?” Danny smiled as he stood up, “Alright…I’ll order something up. You got a preference?”

“None at all. Unless you can get a slice of Mannie’s here from Virginia.” You leaned your head back in the chair looking up at him as he walked past.

“A connoisseur of pizzas, are we?” His eyebrows shot up a little as he pulled out his phone.

“There was just this nice little joint down the street back in the states…there’s nothing like it.” You smiled at him, “Wouldn’t call me a specialist though…”

“Still, my kind of taste. There was a small joint back in Jersey, went there every other Thursday to get the best pie.” He smiled at you thinking about it, “You like Sinatra too?”

“As a matter of fact…between him and Coltrane it’s hard to say what my favorite is.” You smirked at him as he looked at you surprised, “What?”

“I just didn’t expect that answer. Don’t find many jazz lovers on this rock.” He stood there still slightly surprised.

“Yeah, my dad and I would listen to it all the time.” You smiled looking past him into the house, “We’d dance to Sinatra and Bennett right in front of that window…”

“Sounds like a good memory.” Danny liked the way your eyes seemed to light up thinking about it all.

“Yeah, dad and I were really close.” You nodded staring at the spot where he last twirled you around, “You know the last conversation I had with him was about us dancing. I was gonna try to come home for the holidays a couple years ago…ended up not being able to…but he suggested we could have a couple of good drinks and hit up a local jazz joint that opened. I would’ve loved to do it.”

Danny tapped his phone against his hand before he spoke, “Well…maybe one day we can find it. Catch a show in honor of your old man.”

You looked at him a big smile coming over your face, “That would be nice.”

“Alight…I’m gonna order food and grab beer now that we’ve finished this moment.” He awkwardly excused himself hearing you laugh a little, the sound caused his stomach to flip and a smile grow across his face.

This was not good…rule number one for cops…don’t date your partner’s sister, brother, mother, father, cousin, aunt, uncle, or whatever.

Not that this was a date at all. Nor was one set up. Danny was just being friendly. You were in a tough place and he was being a good friend. Right?

“Flirting is our thing…why would we stop our thing?” Danny mumbled to himself as he popped open a couple of beers, “I mean I really enjoy flirting with Y/N, but…”

He let out a frustrated sigh wiping a hand over his face before picking up the drinks, “Just friends…”

Forty-five minutes and a couple of beers later you were both inside giggling over a story he told about Grace. You smiled listening to him go on enjoying how big his smile got when he talked about his family, “And she just walked right over to the poor kid and pushed him right in.”

“She did not!” You shook your head not believing him, “Gracie is too nice!”

Danny started to nod, “It is 100% true. She walked up to that little boy and said, you can’t cut in line you big jerk, and pushed him into the pool.”

“What did you do?” You questioned as he took a drink.

“Mm…well…” He licked his lips turning to you, “at first I scolded her telling her that public pools are not a place to just push people and yada yada…later I got her ice cream telling her how proud I was she stood up to someone.”

“Sounds like the correct way to handle things.” He thanked you as you closed the empty pizza box, “This was fun.”

“It was, wasn’t it.” He smiled and started to pick up empty bottles and paper plates, “We should do it again.”

You paused looking at him, “…what?”

He looked at you seeing surprise written all over your features. Had he been that far off in thinking you were interested in him too?

“Like hangout…dinner…movie…drinks…” He swallowed a little watching you push your hair behind your ear in a nervous motion, “I mean…like in a friends way…it’s nice having someone to hang with that isn’t totally wrapped up in work too…”

“Oh, right…that makes sense…” You nodded glancing at him before turning to walk toward the kitchen, “Yeah, that would be really nice.”

He cleared his throat before following you a few steps behind, “I mean…I hope we are friends…I shouldn’t assume just cause your brother and I are, that we are too…”

You turned quickly to look at him nearly making him run into you. You stared into his eyes, “Of course we’re friends, Danny. I hope you know that you’re more than that…you’re family.”

He stood still just soaking up your presence. You had a magnetic quality that just made him want to stick close to you, “I feel the same…I’ve really liked getting to know you.”

Your smile turned into a smirk, “Nice to know that there’s McGarretts out there that aren’t excessively crazy?”

Danny let out the rattling laugh he was known for as you tossed the pizza box on the counter, “I don’t know…you stormed the castle like a true MaGarrett would back in that jungle.”

“Yeah, well, I picked up a few things here and there.” You leaned against the counter looking at him as he set the bottles on the counter.

“Like being…royalty?” He watched you shift a little looking away, “Hey…I didn’t mean…I just heard one of the guys on the way home mention it. Apparently, you got name for yourself from your time in JSOC…Just curious about it, is all.”

You sighed slowly before looking back to him, “Ask me another day…I don’t really want to talk about it right now.”

Danny nodded slowly before smiling a little, “I will do that.”

You crossed your arms looking down, “I should-uh get to bed…I want to see if Steve is still talking to me in the morning before heading over to my own doctor.”

“He’ll come around.” Danny gave you a reassuring smile as you pushed off the counter, “He’s your brother…he’s just being his usual Navy SEAL protector.”

“Well…I don’t need a protector…” You stepped toward him smirking a little.

“And what do you need?” He turned following you out into the living room again.

“Me?” You glanced back at him before you started to pick things up you’d left laying about the room, “I just need someone who’ll hold my hair back after a long fun night, slow dance with me, and keep good company.”

“That’s it?” Danny stopped putting his hands in his pockets.

“Well…” You folded a blanket holding it to yourself, “yeah…that’s about it. What else would I need, I’m dying…”

“Come on…” Danny looked down suddenly uncomfortable, “You’re gonna beat this.”

You tossed the blanket on the couch, “Maybe…”

“Y/N…” You looked at him as he stepped toward you hand reaching up but stopping short before falling back to his side, “You going to beat it.”

You stared at him feeling yourself tear up a little. He looked so sure, something that you wanted to be., “I…certainly am going to try.”

You sat in the car as the plane rolled around to park, texting Kono about her condition and Chin’s state. You couldn’t believe what occurred in the last 24 hours actually happened.

“Danny, you should have said something sooner.” You frowned looking at him sitting on the counter across from you in the McGarrett kitchen.

“It doesn’t make a difference either way.” He told you before taking another bite off of the plate in his hands, “Rachel and I have to go to court to determine this.”

“But it’s Grace…” You frowned already worried for him, “She wouldn’t really take her away from you would she?”

Danny stared at you feeling several things all at once. First the idea of losing Grace, making a lump form in his throat. Then the warmth of your concern for his baby girl and himself. He swallowed setting the plate down and hopped off the counter.

He stepped over to you putting his hands on top of your legs before resting his forehead against yours. He stared into your eyes as he spoke softly, “I don’t know. Things are not…healthy between Rachel and I. I’d like to think that she’d put Grace before her new husband’s job, but I really don’t know…”

He smiled when you took his head into your hands, “I have got a lot of free time. I’m going to do a bunch of research…and we’re going to make sure Grace stays.”

If that wasn’t enough to worry about, then Danny got several phone calls. His worry only got worse with each one before he finally told you that Malia had been killed and Kono nearly drowned. You called Steve immediately telling him that his family needed him now and this Shelburne could wait.

You never got a response, and figured it was a tower issue. Regardless, you were sitting at an airfield because Danny didn’t like the idea of his people being targeted and knew Wo Fat wouldn’t hesitate to use you against Steve.

You looked over as your brother disembarked the plane. It was always a show watching him and Danny talk. You glanced behind them at another person coming down the plane's stairs and instantly felt a hitch in your throat as she stopped next to Steve.

You opened the door to the Camaro and stood up when Danny looked over to you. The woman put her hands to her mouth and took a step to come toward you, Steve thankfully put an arm out stopping her.

He finished his conversation with Danny before striding over to you, “Y/N…”

You looked at him silent. You didn’t know how to feel in this moment. You didn’t know how to process what you were seeing. Finally, you spoke the question, “Why?”

Steve sighed seeing you begin to tear up. All the years you missed out on because you were forced to grow up faster in order to help with Mary. All of the opportunity to be a different person just began to well up inside of you, “You’ll have to ask Doris yourself because I’m not sure I even believe her answer.”

You nodded slowly wiping a hand over your face, “Okay…uh…we should go. I already set up a house for Shelburne…figured you’d want to set up your own detail.”

“Good.” He nodded pulling out his phone waving Danny and Doris over, “This will give me more time to try and smooth everything over for Chin.”

You nodded again looking at Doris trying to come over to you quickly. You glanced at Danny who looked at you concerned before you ducked into the backseat of the Camaro.

Doris frowned and looked at Steve, “She hates me too?”

“…we don’t hate you…” Danny heard Steve begin as he also got into the backseat with you.

You sat behind the passenger side seat to maximize the least view of yourself when Doris would get in. Danny sighed looking at you, “You alright?”

You swallowed shaking your head before you looked at him a tear trailing down your cheek, “You think I would be…but I just….”

You stopped when Doris opened the door to get in. Danny frowned reaching over giving your elbow a gentle squeeze. It was all he could do, you both decided until everything settled down it would be best to keep their blooming relationship to themselves.

The drive was…awkward, as Steve began trying to smooth everything out with the governor. It didn’t sound like it was going well for him. You kept your gaze out the window mostly trying to avoid any interaction with any one.

Then it happened... Doris began digging. Something your mother was always good at, “I remember Chin Ho Kelly. He was a few grades ahead of the twins in school. Was a good boy.”

You glanced at Danny setting his jaw a little, he was taking this personally, “Good boy turned into a good cop.”

“Losing his wife like that just makes me think of their dad, you know, just what he must have gone through.” Doris looked back at him glancing down at his hand moving away from yours to his lap.

Danny smirked a little as he began to jab back at her, “Yeah, well, a good thing for Chin is that he doesn't have any kids that are gonna be asking, ‘Why isn't Mommy coming home?’”

Doris turned to him fully her eyes narrowing on his face, “You married?”

“Uh, no, not anymore.” Danny cleared his throat a little.

“Kids?” She pressed him.

“I do, I have a daughter named Grace. Uh, best thing that came out of my marriage.” Danny smiled a little mention his daughter.

Doris smirked a little, “You ever think about going for round two?”

He let out a soft huff glancing away before looking her in the eye, “I'd actually rather get kicked in the face with a golf shoe.”

“Hmm, so, what, you've taken a vow of celibacy or?” Doris spoke quickly.

Danny glanced at you shaking his head a little, “No, I didn't say that. Uh, I am seeing somebody. Just-- we're just taking it very slowly.”

“Yeah, well, why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free, right?” Doris smirked staring him down again.

“Doris!” You snapped at her as Danny began to speak over you.

“This is getting very personal, don't you think?” Danny felt his ears begin to get hot.

Doris ignored you both pressing him more, “Don't you want your daughter to see you in a healthy relationship?”

“Oh, because you’re the prime example of parenting?” You snapped at her finally getting her attention fully.

“I agree, respectfully, I don't think you are in a position to be giving me parenting advice.” Danny backed you up.

Doris didn’t take her eyes off you for a moment before returning to Danny, “You know what I think, Danno? I think that you're afraid of commitment.”

He shook his head as he began get the sense that your mother was very perceptive, “That's incorrect, uh, and I prefer Danny.”

“Oh, really? 'Cause that's not what I heard my son call you. He must think you like it.” She smiled at him.

“Doris…” Your voice was low as your fist balled up.

“Oh, he thinks a lot of things that aren't true. He's delusional, actually, which, by the way, no offense to the gene pool.” Danny looked to you as your mom’s mouth dropped opened offended, “I'm sure he's just a one-off.”

The rest of the trip was driven in a tense silence. You waited for your mother to get out and follow Steve inside before you looked to Danny, “I…”

He held up his hand and smiled at you as he shook his head, “Are you okay?”

You stared at him feeling your nose begin to tickle again as tears began to well up, “…I think you know the answer…”

“Yeah…Yeah I do.” He frowned glancing out the window to Steve and Doris on the porch talking to a few officers, “I now see where your brother gets it all from.”

You laughed a little nodding, “Yeah, he was definitely a mama’s boy…and I was daddy’s girl.”

“You obviously benefited more than Steve did.” Danny smiled when you laughed again. He was going to do everything he could to make you feel more at ease, “How are you feeling though?”

You sighed deeply, “Tired…really tired.”

“Okay…let’s get you inside so you can get some rest.” He looked at you with concern, “No matter what, take care of yourself first. Call me for anything, alright?”

You let him worry over you until he and Steve left. You sighed letting it roll out of your nose slowly as you watched your mother talking to Catherine, “This…sucks…”

You let them do their thing and kept to the back of the house in the kitchen. You rubbed your temples slowly in circular motions trying to ease the head ache that was coming on. You opened your eyes when you heard someone walk into the room, “You want some Tylenol?”

You stared at Doris and shook your head, “Can’t take it right now…”

“Oh…” Doris moved over to the stove picking up a kettle, “are you…expecting?”

“What?” You looked at her surprised and shocked.

“Well…I just…”

“No mom, I’m not pregnant…” You stood up to leave.

“So now I’m mom?” You stopped as she started to fill up the kettle.

You clenched your jaw turning to her, “…what do you want from me?”

Doris looked at you, “I thought…well I don’t know what I thought. I never anticipated any of this…but I didn’t expect you to be so…so…”

“Angry…mom, I’m angry. You left us…” She started to defend herself but you stopped her, “I don’t care…I really don’t, but I also don’t need your help. I don’t want it…”

You turned again seeing Catherine in the hall. You started to walk toward her causing her to step in the way. She crossed her arms looking at you with pity, “Y/N…”

“Move Rollins…” You whispered to her.

“Your brother…” She started to speak.

“Doesn’t need to send you to babysit me…just focus on mommy dearest and leave me alone. I’m only here because Steve thinks Wo Fat might come after me too…and I can handle myself…” You brushed past her, “Kamekona is dropping by…when he gets here let me know…he has my meds.”

You walked upstairs to a room laying down on one of the beds. Apparently, everything wiped you out because you only woke up again to guns shots ringing through the house. You dropped to the ground facing the door the bed the only thing between you and everything else. Your heart was beating so quickly it felt like it was trying to jump from your chest.

Finally, you moved running out seeing Catherine sweeping your mother’s room, “Mom?”

“Baby?” You moved into the room as she moved over to you pulling you into a tight embrace as sirens could be heard outside, “I’m okay…”

“Mom! Y/N!” Steve rushed into the room seeing the both of you embracing and didn’t hesitate to wrap his arms around the both of you protectively, “Are you alright? Are you both alright?”

“We’re fine…” Doris told him before looking at you, “We’re both okay…”

“Steve…” Danny came into the room locking eyes with you as he spoke, “no sign of Wo Fat…”

You nodded toward him a little seeing relief spread through his face. Steve started to bark some orders as more officers came into the room. This day saw no relief of rushed events and soon you were saying goodbye to your mother.

“Y/N…” Doris took a deep breath looking at you.

“You need to go.” You crossed your arms indicating to her that you were still not okay with everything, “Steve’s right, it’s not safe here for you.”

Doris sighed looking over to your brother and Danny standing at Steve’s truck, “Your brother isn’t always right, you know?”

“No, but I usually am.” She looked at you as you stared at her with a strong expression, “I worked in intelligence too, guess I’m more like you then everyone thought…we both know that Steve is right.”

Doris frowned reaching up pushing some hair out of your face, “But what if I want to stay to take care of you…”

You swallowed looking down, “I don’t-I don’t need…”

“I know how sick you are…I saw the medications…” Doris whispered to you, “Does your brother know?”

You nodded a little, “Yeah…”

“And Danny?” Your eyes met her’s as she smiled at you, “I’m not that old…your brother might not be able to see it, but then again he always did need things spelled out for him.”

“He knows…enough…right now.” You whispered looking toward Danny and Steve, “I know…how it looks…”

“As long as you’re happy and he doesn’t hurt you…” Doris pulled you into a hug rubbing your back as she did, “Then I won’t have to come back and kill him in his sleep.”

You laughed a little hugging her back before pulling away, “Maybe…maybe one day we can figure this out. When everything isn’t so stupid.”

“I love you baby girl. I always have…always.” Doris frowned as she stepped away. Danny smiled saying goodbye as he walked past and Doris very quickly and quietly slipped to him, “Do not hurt her.”

You watched Danny pause on the walkway glancing back your mother before resuming his walk to you a concerned look on his face, “She…”

“Oh yeah, she knows.” You nodded a little watching her and Steve drive away, “I’m not sure if it’s a spy thing or a mom thing…”

He laughed nervously and reached down taking your hand in his. You were finally alone with him and he knew he was finally able to give you the comfort you so desperately had wanted from him all day, “I’m gonna have to figure out how to tell your brother soon.”

“Oh yeah?” You laced your fingers with his, “Why’s that?”

“ ‘cause this feels too right…” He pulled your hand up to his mouth kissing the back of it, “and I want to be able to do it whenever I want.”
