So I’ve been listening to Tool’s Fear Inoculum on repeat for the last week. I dramatically underestimated this album prior to its release. This was probably some kind of mental defense mechanism my brain created to shield myself from disappointment. I listened to Tool basically non-stop from the mid-90s through 10,000 Days era, and I was skeptical that this new album could live up to the standards set by prior albums. I’m happy to report that I was wrong to be worried. ⠀
Fear Inoculum is an exceptional album. Danny Carey’s drumming (and other percussion) is alive, thriving, and jumps out in the mix. Justin’s bass playing is a delight, highly present and flavored with delicious effects throughout. Adam’s guitar playing tastefully colors each song in layers, if that makes sense, and his tone is so thick. Maynard makes periodic appearances on this record, showing admirable restraint in adding vocals for just a few minutes per song (and then only when in service to the song). ⁠⠀.⁠ ⠀
Favorite tracks: Pnuema (clear winner), Descending, and Invincible. ⁠⠀

Tool - Lateralus

I may get some sneers for posting Tool but I’m in a mood to be honest with ya’ll and frankly, I love this band’s output. I don’t always love Maynard or his open disdain for the fans, the people who have made him rich, famous, and capable of doing literally anything except working on music, and I don’t love how long it’s been since the last album. However, sometimes I wonder if I would love what they wrote and recorded now anyway. So many amazing bands from my youth have tried to come back and revive a once-dead line-up and a retired sound to very, very poor results. I’ve been let down by so many bands who had incredible rapport and energy before stopping to do other things and they just never really seem to find that same groove that made them so special the first time around. Tool is full of incredibly talented musicians so it’s unlikely that they wouldn’t still rip, but after so many side projects and self-congratulatory other things, would Maynard still know what to do in front of this band anymore? Would they still have the same mojo that made us all fall in love with them in the 90s? Would their live show still be absolutely entrancing? Honestly, probably! Some of the best concerts I’ve ever watched have been Tool concerts. But the longer they wait, the more I wonder if I still care.
