In the wake of the events in Ferguson, I'd like to share the story of Danroy "DJ" Henry, a student and athlete at Pace University. In October 2010, DJ was shot by a police officer, handcuffed, and left with no medical attention for at least 15 minutes prior to passing away. He and his friends were out for the night when a scuffle broke out at the bar. As DJ was sober, he got in the car with his two friends to drive them away from the scene unfolding. An officer indicated to DJ to clear the area, so he began to pull away. In a panicked frenzy, a second officer (Hess) ran to DJ's car, jumped on the hood, pressed his gun to the windshield, and fired 3 shots. Reports say that the initial officer was calling to Hess to stand down. One bullet struck DJ's best friend sitting on the passenger seat in the arm while at least one other struck DJ in the chest. He was pulled out of the car, handcuffed, and left on the ground while medical personal and other officials tended to Hess' "injury" - a pained knee from jumping on the hood of the car. The entire time, his two friends begged for someone to help DJ. After at least 15 minutes, a bystander began performing CPR on DJ. In the end, DJ passed away. Hess on the other hand had the full backing of the police force and was acquitted by a grand jury after making unproven claims that an intoxicated DJ had intentionally tried to run him down.
