DAENERYS TARGARYEN — season five
"i miss those moments of bone-chilling empowerment and triumph over death and sadness i miss watching something that made me feel like i could conquer the world" beautifully said. GoT/ASOIAF has so many strong female characters, idk why Dany was the only one who made me feel that way to this extent. Outside of it, even Rey or Yennefer or Sabrina or Eleven never made me feel that way, I wonder why that is.
I think it’s because Dany is a strong character inside a strong story (and by strong I mean compelling, narratively ambitious and well written, with regards to book canon primarily). Since the beginning, you got the sense that Dany wasn’t just strong in and by herself, she also had a larger purpose in the context of a huge epic building up, a story that meant something. Your expectations kept growing and growing, and every victory, every triumph, every climax she reached wasn’t just an assertive moment for herself, but a step towards the moment when she would team up with the other heroes and put her enormous power in service of that larger, universal purpose. Through her, you could vicariously experience the feeling of going not only from underdog to dragon queen, but also making it matter beyond the limits of your own personal existence. Reach greatness not just for yourself, but also for others.
It was an empowering individual narrative in the context of an empowering collective narrative. (you have something similar with Yennefer and Rey and even Eleven, for sure, but to a smaller extent, and that’s because Asoiaf is... I guess it’s simply a bigger and better written story, you know, one that aims much higher---the intricate tapestry that GRRM created makes the moment when it all comes to fruition much, much more rewarding. Star Wars could have gone there, too... in a different way, genre wise, but it could have... and it didn’t, but that’s another issue).
It’s also why Dany’s story ending the way it ended in the show feels so gutting. It’s such a huge betrayal of the promise and expectations that were set by her arc.
