Danzig - Blood And Tears
DANZIG-KILLER WOLF
Monday, May 15: Danzig, “Snakes of Christ”
“Snakes of Christ” was arguably the most successful of Glenn Danzig’s many “Twist of Cain” rewrites, in large part due to Rick Rubin’s production: Danzig II: Lucifuge placed so much emphasis on Chuck Biscuits’ unstoppable drumming that it was virtually impossible to not get caught up in the momentum, and the album’s second tune was a particular beneficiary of Rubin’s drum-heavy recording. However, although the song sounded far less sterile than Danzig’s first album, the rest of the band was still a bit low in the mix, as John Christ’s riffing came off a bit flat. As for Glenn, he was at the apex of his “evil Elvis” persona, slurring and bellowing his mangled religious iconography with aplomb if not self-awareness. But as always with Danzig, the key was to laugh both with and at the man’s unerring conviction, though the musicianship of his best lineup was not to be denied.
