When the Ronin approaches Basho with their proposal, begging him to not make a big deal out of this, you can BET Basho WILL make a BIG deal out of it. He’ll freeze for a hot second and then tear up, maybe try to hug the Ronin too and give a speech about how grateful he is for this chance. To know that they chose him out of everyone else would make him feel extremely honored - after all, he knows that the Ronin has both Tosh and Masa, people also qualified to teach them anything the Ronin might want to know. And Basho respects those two, so he’d be on cloud nine for a while.
But unlike Tosh and Masa who have way too strict schedules or high expectations, Basho actually vibes with the Ronin and adapts to their way of learning things. Can’t learn to read without learning to write, so he’ll try to teach them basic things too while he’s at it - starting with things they’ll find familiar, like places in Genfu, names of people they know, numbers, animals. . . Maybe also samurai lingo since that seems to be a favorite topic for them. And then easy poems or haikus that he’ll invent just for them to read and practice.
Also not gonna lie, Basho probably makes the Ronin read something dumb outloud at first when they start to get the hang of it - like “the person reading this is a dummy” or “I have the best teacher in the world”. If the Ronin wishes to continue learning how to write, then this little joke will carry on and Basho will read equally dumb things when he revises their writings, like “the poet reading this is a fucking nerd” or something like that. (Also this is def just wishful thinking and gay yearning but I can def see them bond and getting closer and NGHHHH)
This goes without saying, but these lessons will most likely end up being private and secret - the Ronin doesn’t want Tosh or Masa to get offended or feel bad for not being choosen as their teacher. And also they don’t want Jun or anyone else to poke fun at them for wanting to learn. Or y’know. Try to kill Basho. The more time the spend though, the shorter their lessons get. The two would spend time just talking about things and chilling. The Ronin would slowly stop being so harsh to Basho after seeing that he genuinely has a passion for literature and teaching others about it.
