Grappling - Training
My grappling student and matt partner is a 55 yr old, 280 lb, 6′ 3″ bear, who has a lot of upper body strength. If I let him get his arm around my head, it’s game over. He’s heavy, knows how to use his weight, an when he learns to transition smoothly through technique, anyone he grapples with is in trouble.
Last night we studied Darce Choke from turtle, side control and half guard. The previous saturday he was in side control while I was on my side, and he asked me tonight what attacks he could execute from that position. Darce came to mind.
After practicing them, we then focused on Guillotine - from guard, from side control, from knees. There are two forms of Guillotine - arm in and arm out. And there are 4 ways to escape Guillotine, depending on where your arm is. 3 require you to jump over your opponents leg and establish side control. The 4th uses your shoulder from guard to suffocate your opponent through body weight pressure.
My student found that he liked using his shoulder more than his forearm. He was finding his elbow being hyper extended.
Finally, we did a bit of half guard rolling. I’ve taught him very well how to pass half guard, so I’m trying to improve my technique to reverse him. Without even thinking about it or trying, I reversed him through a elevator sweep. I was like, “How did I do that?” If the technique works on my matt partner, it will generally work as a rule on anyone.
What I was trying for was a leg drag sweep from deep half. I failed to grab his toes, and he executed a Darce on me. =)
