For ship dynamic: Darius + your version of Hunter’s predecessor?

Ohhh good timing I have been rotating them in my mind all day actually!!

This meme also needs a box called "I saw the potential for Angst and was drawn in like a moth to a flame." Ig the closest we have is "Oh there's no way this will end well" but usually I interpret that to mean "they're gonna destroy each other and themselves <3" whereas Darius/Golden Guard is just Doomed By The Narrative: The Romance

anyway Gideon specifically: This man is trying to be a Knight In Shining Armour, in a world and a job where he really can't be, and part of that is trying to be an Idealised Romantic Hero for Darius. His go-to romantic gesture is hand kissing (Darius starts wearing his gloves after Gideon dies), he wears a little purple sash from Darius hidden under his armor as a romantic favor. He doesn't tell Darius when he's dealing with abuse and trauma because he has to be Strong and deal with it himself!!

I think on the whole they had a good relationship--they made each other happy and encouraged each other towards character growth! But also, while the whole Hunter Misunderstanding was hardly Gideon's fault, Darius would have been less likely to doubt him if he'd been open before! And to some extent, Darius fell for the Idealised Hero front Gideon put up, and after his death crashed hard into disillusionment and analysing every little problem they had.

And also? while it may not be obvious in Broken Masks and Bones because I'm writing from Belos' pov: Gideon died for Darius. Yes, he was rebelling, yes he's happy he gets to give his Reason You Suck speech, but at the heart of it, everything he says there is to deflect Belos' anger and suspicion away from Darius.

I just... one day I've gotta write a fic from Gideon's pov, instead of Belos and Darius and Odalia being Wrong about him. He's been expecting Belos to kill him for years and, well, what's a more Romantic Hero way to go than protecting the man you love? Fucking doomed by the narrative guy.
