Kaz let out an exasperated sigh as he leaned his head against the wall and closed his eyes. So many questions. How had he gotten stuck with the task to watch over the supposed Sun Summoner? Oh, right. Because Inej was scouting the area to make sure they were safe for the time being, and Jesper had gone with her in case they were not. So it had been his pleasure to look after Alina. 

Opening his eyes again, he took a moment to study the girl sitting opposite of him. She didn't look like much, if he was honest. Hardly older than him, similar(ish) build to Inej but without the muscles, and her hands bound behind her back she looked less than threatening. And certainly not like a bloody Saint. 

"Not sure I'm the right one to judge," he finally shrugged. "But giving people false hope could be considered criminal by some."

Nikolai reclines back on his chair, head tilted back to evade her worried gaze. Agony shoots through his body, the stretch pulling at the muscles the healers had painfully stitched back together just this morning. Nonetheless, he remains still, not betraying anything, hazel eyes assessing the golden wallpaper adorned with the symbols of Ravka, all converting towards the crown molding above, the crown's emblem etched there. It was a display intended to inspire awe, or just as well, a tool of oppression, meant to remind visitors that the man behind the desk was the king, and held all the power.

Not a lot of thought had gone into what the man behind the desk was supposed to feel. Though, perhaps, this affliction — doubt — was something new to this room. Previous Lantsov men impervious to such frail emotions, their conviction in their own righteous claims to the throne allowing them to leave this chamber at a reasonable time, unburdened by the fear that their departure would be the final crack in the kingdom's foundation.

As exhaustion seeps in, he finds himself wavering, the knowledge that Alina won't relent until he confesses the truth, or leaves this room, allowing the façade to crumble, and the words to slowly spill out.

THE GARDENS are quiet , only the night bugs singing their soft songs . there's a slight chill in the air , but nikolai's pajamas and dressing gown are enough to keep him comfortable . the presence of alina had been a surprise , but a welcome one , even if he didn't envy her ( their ) predicament .

❝ AS FAR as coronations go , i think it'll be remembered as the most interesting in the lantsov line . ❞ it's said dryly , almost uncaring . but there's an unease under his skin . it shook him , deeply , and he's only moderately succeeding at pretending it didn't . he circles around , to sit down beside alina . he doesn't know how to broach the subject with HER , either . that woman had been severed in half , which nikolai was grateful for , don't get him wrong . but at the same tIime - - - - well . one wonders .

NIKOLAI CONSIDERS himself a respectful man . higher than his baser desires and ever in control . and even now , despite the figure alina cuts in only her nightshift , nikolai is hardly leering . but it had made him pause , briefly STARE . her comment his eyes flicking quickly to her face and he blinks . then laughs , more surprise than anything else .

IT'S DARKNESS and claws and teeth . it's hunger and fear and anger . there is blood and anguish and then he's falling falling . there are no wings to catch him and the ground is so close .

he gasps with a start , body jolting in the bed . he flounders for a moment , the room dark and quiet . his hands reach out and there - - - ALINA . next to him . still without proper thought , he grasps , releasing a shuddering breath as he pulls her close .
